A method was developed for observing changes in the endothelial cells in rabbit ear veins in vivo by scanning electron microscopy. Injection of fatty acids into the ear vein caused damage to the endothelium. The first signs of damage seen were marked bulges in the nuclei and loss of the rhomboidal shape of the endothelial cells. More severe damage included loss of nuclei, leaving holes in the cytoplasm. Some parts of the damaged endothelium showed complete separation of cells from each other and exposure of sub-endothelial tissue to which platelets with pseudopodia were adhering. Damage to the

Lithium metal batteries are considered promising candidates for next-generation energy storage due to the high capacity and low redox potential of lithium negative electrodes. However, dendritic Li growth and unstable solid-electrolyte interphase formation remain critical bottlenecks for practical implementation. While electrolyte anion chemistry critically governs solid-electrolyte interphase formation, nanoscale observations of anion-regulated Li nucleation and growth mechanisms remain limited in tracking dynamic interfacial processes. Here, we employ in situ liquid-phase transmission electr

(Scanning) transmission electron microscopy ((S)TEM) has significantly advanced materials science but faces challenges in correlating precise atomic structure information with the functional properties of devices due to its time-intensive nature. To address this, an analytical workflow is introduced for the holistic characterization, modelling, and simulation of device heterostructures. This workflow automates the experimental (S)TEM data analysis, providing an in-depth characterization of crystallographic information, 3D orientation, elemental composition, and strain distribution. It reduces

In cryo-transmission electron microscopy, single-particle reconstructions exploit the weak phase object approximation. A decisive aspect to be studied systematically is to what extent underlying scattering assumptions limit the resolution, whether theoretical limits are compatible with experimental observations, and if current experimental benchmarks achieve this limit. Single-, multislice, and hybrid scattering models are employed in this work for simulating eight protein complexes up to 97.5 nm in thickness, embedded in low-density amorphous ice obtained from molecular dynamics. With the mul

Ultrastructural alterations in the central nervous system-such as synaptic dysfunction, axonal injury, and demyelination-contribute to the cognitive and sensorimotor deficits observed in neurological damage, in which TLR4-mediated neuroinflammation is a key pathological feature. This systematic review synthesizes evidence from 20 rodent studies employing transmission electron microscopy (TEM) to investigate central ultrastructural alterations induced by neuroinflammation, with a focus on the brain. A search was performed on Embase, PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science databases. Study quality wa

Hyperphosphatemia is independently linked with vascular calcification, cardiovascular disease, bone-mineral disease, progression of renal insufficiency, and all-cause mortality in chronic kidney disease (CKD) and end-stage renal disease (ESRD). The emerging importance of fibroblast growth factor-23 (FGF-23) and its co-factor Klotho play very important roles as phosphaturic hormones; however, phosphate levels rise due to a loss of renal Klotho production and the phosphaturic effects of the FGF-23/Klotho axis. Hyperphosphatemia is also associated with calciphylaxis, acceleration of renal tubuloi

Electron microscopy (EM) provides the necessary resolution to visualize the finer structures of nervous tissue morphology, which is important to understand healthy and pathological conditions in the brain. However, for the interpretation of the micrographs the tissue preservation is crucial. The quality of the tissue structure is mostly influenced by the post mortem interval (PMI), the time of death until the preservation of the tissue. Therefore, the aim of this study was to optimize the preparation-procedure for the human frontal lobe to preserve the ultrastructure as well as possible despit

BACKGROUND: Severe pneumonia is responsible for great mortality and morbidity worldwide, and early-applied effective anti-infective therapy can improve the prognosis of patients. However, identification of infectious agents in severe pneumonia remains a major challenge so far. In this study, the potential utility of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) in detecting nonbacterial pathogens in patients with severe pneumonia was retrospectively evaluated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 106 patients diagnosed with severe pneumonia at our hospital from September 2015 to December 2017 were incl

HYPOTHESIS: To examine the cellular events following induced superficial lesions of the human tympanic membrane (TM). Such information could lead to enhanced appreciation of repair mechanisms and novel strategies to restore TM perforations.
BACKGROUND: Persistent perforation of the TM in chronic otitis media is a major global health problem and frequently necessitates surgical intervention. Most TM perforations heal spontaneously and swiftly, but sometimes healing fails. The underlying mechanisms and the reason for incomplete repair are often elusive, although some mechanisms have been propos

The adhesion of Candida albicans to the genital epithelium has not been fully investigated in vivo. The objective of this study was to evaluate the ultrastructural aspects of C. albicans adhesion in the lower genital system of female Wistar rats through scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The genital infection persisted until the end of the experiment, and all rats showed the same adhesion aspects. Various associated yeast/hyphae were observed in the lumen and adhered both at the vaginal and endocervical levels where the fungal filamentation process occurred. In the vaginal epitheli

An ultrastructural study of the cementum and periodontal ligament (PDL) changes after continuous intrusion with two different and controlled forces in humans was carried out. Twelve first upper premolars, at stage 10 of Nolla, orthodontically indicated for extraction from six patients (mean age 15.3) were used. They were divided into three experimental groups, distributed intra-individually as follows: control (not moved), continuously intruded for 4 weeks with 50 or 100 cN force, utilizing a precise biomechanical model with nickel titanium super-elastic wires (NiTi-SE), which were developed a

Pulsed electric fields (PEF) is a nonthermal food preservation process where organoleptic and nutritional properties of the food are maintained. PEF is known to inactivate microorganisms by causing dielectric breakdown of the cell membrane, thus altering the functionality of the membrane as a semipermeable barrier. The extent of damage of the cell membrane, whether visible in the form of a pore or as loss of membrane functionality leads to the inactivation of the microorganism. The objective of this study was to investigate under transmission electron microscopy (TEM) the morphological changes

Abnormalities in ultrastructures of islet capillaries were detected in db/db mice, with the visual inspection and morphometry of electron micrographs. The observed changes are: (1) capillary scarcity; (2) increase in the mean and diversity of capillary size; (3) pericapillary edema and fibrosis; (4) hypertrophy of the pericyte and abundance therein of actin-like microfilaments; and (5) luminal irregularity. Changes (2), (3) and (4) are conceived to indicate hyperperfusion, capillary hypertension and secondary vascular response. In particular, such pericyte changes were found to be shared by ot
