Selective Self-Assembly and Modification of Herringbone Reconstructions at a Solid-Liquid Interface of Au(111).

The precise control of molecular self-assembly on surfaces presents many opportunities for the creation of complex nanostructures. Within this endeavor, selective patterning by exploiting molecular interactions at the solid-liquid interface would be a beneficial capability. Using scanning tunneling microscopy at the 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene/Au(111) interface, we observed selective self-assembly of 1,3,5-tris(4-methoxyphenyl)benzene (TMPB) molecules in the face-centered cubic (FCC) regions of Au(111). Density functional theory calculations suggest higher adsorption energy of TMPB molecules at FCC

Atomic-Scale Characterization of Droplet Epitaxy Quantum Dots.

The fundamental understanding of quantum dot (QD) growth mechanism is essential to improve QD based optoelectronic devices. The size, shape, composition, and density of the QDs strongly influence the optoelectronic properties of the QDs. In this article, we present a detailed review on atomic-scale characterization of droplet epitaxy quantum dots by cross-sectional scanning tunneling microscopy (X-STM) and atom probe tomography (APT). We will discuss both strain-free GaAs/AlGaAs QDs and strained InAs/InP QDs grown by droplet epitaxy. The effects of various growth conditions on morphology and c

Brown spider venom phospholipase D as a tool to modulate melanoma cell biology.

Phospholipases D (PLDs) from Loxosceles venoms are enzymes that cleave phospholipids triggering biological effects, as uncontrolled inflammatory response. We treated melanoma cell lines B16-F1 and B16-F10 with recombinant PLD from the venom of the spider Loxosceles intermedia. Toxin binding to cell surface and modulating events were evaluated by specific antibodies, or a chimera PLD-GFP and confocal fluorescence microscopy, flow cytometry, inverted microscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Cytotoxicity was performed using MTT, Trypan Blue, and CellTiterGlo; and intracellular calcium measur

AuNP@ZeNose (ZIF-based electrochemical nose) for detection of flu biomarker in breath.

A novel electrochemical sensor is reported for the detection of isoprene levels in breath using a ZIF-based electrochemical nose. This sensor incorporates a hybrid detection system using gold nanoparticles encapsulated inside the ZIF-8 moiety. Breath-based analysis is widely being used for monitoring the metabolic state of the body. It is associated with the change in the concentration of volatile organic compounds and inorganic gases released endogenously and can be tracked using breath as the sample. One such volatile organic compound, isoprene, has been correlated to the presence of influen

Atom-Precision Synthesis of MoS2/WS2 Lateral Heterostructures for Prolonged Excitonic Lifetime.

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) lateral heterostructures provide unique platforms to study nanoscale physics, but progress is limited by the difficulty of producing high-quality interfaces, which require atomic-precision growth rather than simple stacking. We report a controllable two-step chemical vapor deposition (CVD) process for directed epitaxy growth of MoS2/WS2 monolayer lateral heterostructures. Atom-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy measurements demonstrate an atomically sharp, defect-free MoS2/WS2 interface formed along the sulfur zigzag edge of MoS2, indicating an atomi

Intertwined Charge Stripes and Majorana Zero Modes in an Iron-Based Superconductor.

In type-II superconductors, magnetic fields modulate the amplitude and phase of the superconducting order parameter, forming quantized vortices where superconductivity is locally suppressed and exotic bound states or competing electronic orders emerge. Using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy on epitaxial Ba(Fe_{0.94}Co_{0.06})_{2}As_{2} films, we discover an incommensurate charge-stripe order aligned with the Fe-Fe bond direction. These charge modulations become strongly enhanced at the vortex core and extend far into the vortex halo. Strikingly, the charge order modulates An

Fully-gapped topological insulating states in a bilayer Bi(111) film grown on α-MoO3.

Fully-gapped topological insulators (TIs) integrated with semiconducting or insulating substrates are essential for non-dissipative electronics, where transport occurs through topologically protected edge channels. However, substrate-induced effects often increase bulk states within the gap or drive topological phase transitions, undermining device functionality. Here, we report the molecular beam epitaxy growth of bilayer Bi(111) on monolayer α-MoO3, forming a high-quality TI-semiconductor heterostructure despite their distinct lattice symmetries. Scanning tunneling microscopy reveals atomica

Dimensional crossover and local strain induced deflection of the spin spiral state in multiferroic NiI2.

Low-dimensional multiferroics hold great promise for integrated magnetoelectric devices. Spin spiral state has recently been shown to induce ferroelectricity in single-layer van der Waals (vdW) material NiI2. However, how this state evolves and can be tuned towards the two-dimensional limit remains unclear. Here, we combine spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy, layer-by-layer film growth, and multi-scale theoretical modeling to investigate the spin spirals in NiI2 thin films. As the film thickness increases from 1 to 7 monolayers, we observed a continuous increase of spin-spiral wavele

Growth and interface formation in CeO x -Ni(111) inverse model catalysts.

We investigated the inverse catalyst configuration CeO x /Ni(111) by combining diffraction, spectroscopic, and imaging techniques to obtain a complete picture of the growth mode. Our results from quantitative X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, low-energy electron diffraction, and scanning tunneling microscopy reveal a complex system in which the initial oxidation of the Ni substrate plays a fundamental role in the preferred orientation of ceria and its initial reduction. We demonstrate the formation of a NiO(111) interfacial layer between the CeO x (111) wetting layer and the Ni substrate, whil

Tunneling field emission from nano-optics under electron irradiation.

While field emission, which is crucial for sub-angstrom resolution imaging and nanofabrication, has been extensively investigated in high-voltage and laser-driven systems, its realization through plasmonics under electron irradiation remains unexplored. Here, we demonstrate a proof of concept for electron beam-driven field emission from plasmonic emitter arrays with nanoscale hotspots acting as highly efficient emission sites, which also exhibit strong surface-enhanced Raman scattering activity. The electron beam-induced field distributions and electrical polarization switching are visualized

Atomic Bromine Layer as a Hole-Doping Decoupling Adlayer for Molecular Spin Modulation.

Controlling surface-confined molecular spin is a central challenge for molecule-based nanotechnologies where molecular devices are frequently fabricated by functional molecules in contact with solid surfaces. Herein, combined scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and density functional theory studies demonstrate the crucial role of an atomic bromine monolayer on Au(111) in modulating the spin configurations of the adsorbed 3d metal phthalocyanines (MPcs, M = Fe and Co). The Br layer exhibits a large band gap that can efficiently decouple the MPc molecules from their underlying Au substrat

Emergent One-Dimensional Charge Order at Domain Walls of Competing Charge-Density-Wave Orders.

Competing electronic phases can generate emergent states at their nanoscale interfaces that do not exist in the bulk. Direct real-space visualization of such interfacial states, however, remains exclusive. Here, we report an emergent one-dimensional (1D) charge order confined to atomically sharp domain walls between competing charge density wave (CDW) orders in the rare-earth ditelluride GdTe2. Using low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy, we resolve three distinct symmetry-breaking CDWs occupying spatially separated surface nanodomains. Atomically Dispersed Cobalt within a Bilayer of C60.

Individual cobalt atoms trapped within a bilayer of C60 have been produced by the deposition of Co atoms onto a C60 double layer supported on graphite. High-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) reveals two stable states of a single cobalt atom coordinated with three C60 molecules, which is denoted as (C60)3Co. The diffusion of the cobalt atoms within the C60 layers is highly limited, resulting in the effective capture of single cobalt atoms in the interstitial sites of the close-packed C60 layers. Density functional theory calculations show that the Co atom is located in the tetrahed

Submolecular Resolution Imaging of Amyloid Aggregation: An STM Approach to Decipher Missense Mutation Effects in α-Synuclein.

Intrinsically disordered regions (IDRs) are critical regulators of cellular function, and their aberrant phase transitions into amyloid fibrils underlie the pathogenesis of amyloidosis. Missense mutations modulate IDR aggregation, but mechanisms remain unclear. Here, we investigate the impact of Parkinson's disease-associated mutations (A53V and T72M) on the aggregation dynamics of α-synuclein (α-Syn), a prototype protein containing IDRs, using scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). We focused on two disease-associated mutations, A53V and T72M, in the fibril-forming fragment (residues 42-78) of

Phase Separation of Binary Triptycenes by an Iodine Interlayer Film on a Ag(111) Surface.

We report the self-assembly behaviors of two triptycenes (Trip-1 and Trip-2) on metal surfaces without and with an iodine passivation interlayer by combining scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and density functional theory (DFT) studies. On the Ag(111) surface, Trip-1 molecules form islands through intermolecular aldehyde-aldehyde hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking of benzene rings. In contrast, Trip-2 molecules lie flat and dispersed on the surface. The introduction of Trip-2 molecules can break the ordered assembly of Trip-1. Trip-1 and Trip-2 molecules will be mixed in a disorderly manner.

Evidence for Two-Dimensional Weyl Fermions in Air-Stable Monolayer PtTe1.75.

The Weyl semimetals represent a distinct category of topological materials wherein the low-energy excitations appear as the long-sought Weyl Fermions. Exotic transport and optical properties are expected because of the chiral anomaly and linear energy-momentum dispersion. While three-dimensional Weyl semimetals have been successfully realized, the quest for their two-dimensional (2D) counterparts is ongoing. Here, we report the realization of 2D Weyl Fermions in monolayer PtTe1.75, which has strong spin-orbit coupling and lacks inversion symmetry, by combined angle-resolved photoemission spect

Visualizing the gas-sensitive structure of the CuZn surface in methanol synthesis catalysis.

Methanol formation over Cu/ZnO catalysts is linked with a catalytically active phase created by contact between Cu nanoparticles and Zn species whose chemical and structural state depends on reaction conditions. Herein, we use variable-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy at elevated pressure conditions combined with X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy measurements to investigate the surface structures and chemical states that evolve when a CuZn/Cu(111) surface alloy is exposed to reaction gas mixtures. In CO2 hydrogenation conditions, Zn stays embedded in the CuZn surface, but once CO gas i

Surface-confined alternating copolymerization with molecular precision by stoichiometric control.

Keen desires for artificial mimicry of biological polymers and property improvement of synthesized ones have triggered intensive explorations for sequence-controlled copolymerization. However, conventional synthesis faces great challenges to achieve this goal due to the strict requirements on reaction kinetics of comonomer pairs and tedious synthetic processes. Here, sequence-controlled alternating copolymerization with molecular precision is realized on surface. The stoichiometric control serves as a thermodynamic strategy to steer the polymerization selectivity, which enables the selective a

Enhanced Superconductivity and Rashba Effect in a Buckled Plumbene-Au Kagome Superstructure.

Plumbene, with a structure similar to graphene, is expected to possess a strong spin-orbit coupling and thus enhances its superconducting critical temperature (Tc ). In this work, a buckled plumbene-Au Kagome superstructure grown by depositing Au on Pb(111) is investigated. The superconducting gap monitored by temperature-dependent scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy shows that the buckled plumbene-Au Kagome superstructure not only has an enhanced Tc with respect to that of a monolayer Pb but also possesses a higher value than what owned by a bulk Pb substrate. Magnetic Field-Induced Spin Nematic Phase Up to Room Temperature in Epitaxial Antiferromagnetic FeTe Thin Films Grown by Molecular Beam Epitaxy.

Electronic nematicity, where strong correlations drive electrons to align in a way that lowers the crystal symmetry, is ubiquitous among unconventional superconductors. Understanding the interplay of such a nematic state with other electronic phases underpins the complex behavior of these materials and the potential for tuning their properties through external stimuli. Here, we report magnetic field-induced spin nematicity in a model system tetragonal FeTe, the parent compound of iron chalcogenide superconductors, which exhibits a bicollinear antiferromagnetic order.
