Modified emulsion solvent evaporation method for fabricating core-shell microspheres.

Solvent evaporation/extraction method is widely used for core-shell microspheres fabrication. However, the solvent evaporation rate, as an essential factor for polymers phase separation, is difficult to control which results in failure of complete phase separation between polymers. At the present study, the selective dissolution technique was used to improve the phase separation, and successfully fabricate core-shell microspheres for controlled delivery of drug with reduced initial burst release. The core-shell microspheres were prepared with poly(l-lactic-co-glycolic acid) (PLGA) and poly(l-l

Porous TiO2 microspheres with tunable properties for photocatalytic air purification.

The synthesis of highly-crystalline porous TiO(2) microspheres is reported using ultrasonic spray pyrolysis (USP) in the presence of colloidal silica as a template. We have exploited the interactions between hot SiO(2) template particles surface and TiO(2) precursor that occur during reaction inside the droplets, to control the physical and chemical properties of the resulting particles. Varying the SiO(2) to titanium precursor molar ratio and the colloidal silica dimension, we obtained porous titania microspheres with tunable morphology, porosity, BET surface area, crystallite size, band-gap,

Optimizing the performance of tin dioxide microspheres for phosphopeptide enrichment.

Phosphopeptide enrichment based on metal oxide affinity chromatography is one of the most powerful tools for studying protein phosphorylation on a large scale. To complement existing metal oxide sorbents, we have recently introduced tin dioxide as a promising alternative. The preparation of SnO(2) microspheres by the nanocasting technique, using silica of different morphology as a template, offers a strategy to prepare materials that vary in their particle size and their porosity. Here, we demonstrate how such stannia materials can be successfully generated and their properties fine-tuned in o

Floating properties and release characteristics of hollow microspheres of acyclovir.

Acyclovir, a selective antiherpes virus agent, was loaded in the hollow microspheres to improve bioavailability and patient compliance by prolonging the residence time in the gastrointestinal tract. The hollow microspheres of acyclovir were prepared by solvent evaporation diffusion method using Eudragit S 100 as a controlled polymer. We found that the process conditions that provided the high % yield of the hollow microspheres were the use of 5:8:2 of dichloromethane: ethanol: isopropanol as a solvent system and stirring at 300 rpm for 60 min. Preparation of novel polymeric microspheres for controlled release of finasteride.

The utility of the novel polycarbonate, poly(propylene carbonate maleate) (PPCM) to encapsulate and control the release of finasteride, via microspheres, was investigated. The PPCM microspheres loaded with finasteride were elaborated by a simple oil-in-water (O/W) emulsion-solvent evaporation method. Various manufacturing parameters, including the concentration of polymer in dichloromethane (DCM) and the polymer:finasteride ratios were altered to optimize process variables during the microspheres production. The effects of these changes on the characteristics of the microspheres were examined.

Injectable microspheres with controlled drug release for glaucoma filtering surgery.

The authors evaluated the effects of biodegradable poly (lactic acid) microspheres that provided the controlled release of the antimetabolic agent adriamycin (ADR) to prevent post surgical fibrosis after glaucoma filtering surgery. Fifty six eyes of 28 rabbits underwent posterior lip sclerotomy and received a 0.2 ml subconjunctival injection that contained microspheres 90 degrees from the filtering site immediately after surgery. Microspheres containing ADR (100 or 200 micrograms) were randomly administered to one eye. The fellow eyes served as controls and received microspheres without the dr

Sustained release of nerve growth factor from biodegradable polymer microspheres.

Although grafted adrenal medullary tissue to the striatum has been used both experimentally and clinically in parkinsonism, there is a definite need to augment long-term survival. Infusion of nerve growth factor (NGF) or implantation of NGF-rich tissue into the area of the graft prolongs survival and induces differentiation into neural-like cells. To provide for prolonged, site-specific delivery of this growth factor to the grafted tissue in a convenient manner, we fabricated biodegradable polymer microspheres of poly(L-lactide)co-glycolide (70:30) containing NGF. Biologically active NGF was r

Use of 99mTc-labeled albumin microspheres in cerebral vascular disease.

The intracarotid injection of radioalbumin microspheres (15 and 30 mum) is followed by scanning procedures that permit the description of the cerebral bloodflow distribution. The method is reproducible. Injection can be made into the internal and common carotid arteries, as well as into the aortic arch or the left ventricle. This last procedure makes it easy to examine patients with severe extracranial vascular stenosis or thrombosis and permits comparison of the two hemispheres. Most patients (88%) injected on the affected side showed one or more local vascular deficits. The method therefore

Yttrium-90 microsphere radioembolisation for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Hepatocellular carcinoma is the most common liver neoplasm and the fifth most common cancer worldwide. Moreover, its incidence has increased dramatically since the mid-2000s. While surgical resection and liver transplantation are the main curative treatments, only around 20% of people with early hepatocellular carcinoma may benefit from these therapies. Current treatment options for unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma include various ablative and trans-arterial therapies in addition to the drug sorafenib. OBJECTIVES: To determine the benefits and harms of yttrium-90 microsphere

Formulation and characterization of microspheres loaded with imatinib for sustained delivery.

The aim of this study was the development of imatinib-loaded poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) microspheres with high loading efficiency which can afford continuous release of imatinib over a prolonged period of time. Imatinib mesylate loaded PLGA microspheres with a size of 6-20 μm were prepared by a double emulsion (W1/O/W2) method using dichloromethane as volatile solvent. It was found that the microspheres were spherical with a non-porous surface; imatinib loading efficiency (LE) was highly dependent on the pH of the external water phase (W2). By increasing the pH of W2 phase above the

Development and validation of a fluorescent microsphere immunoassay for anti-IgA.

Anti-IgA may cause anaphylactic transfusion reactions in IgA-deficient individuals. Testing for IgG anti-IgA is useful to identify persons at risk. This report describes an immunoassay for anti-IgA that uses polyclonal IgA coupled to fluorescent microspheres as an immunosorbent. Anti-IgA is detected by phycoerythrin-labeled anti-IgG. The assay is calibrated in arbitrary units by use of a serum that contains anti-IgA. Dose-response studies with sera that contain anti-IgA showed positive responses at dilutions up to 32-fold greater than the dilution used to test patients' samples. Inhibition stu
