A traumatic brain injury (TBI) causes abnormal proliferation of neuroglial cells, and over-release of glutamate induces oxidative stress and inflammation and leads to neuronal death, memory deficits, and even death if the condition is severe. There is currently no effective treatment for TBI. Recent interests have focused on the benefits of supplements or natural products like Ganoderma. Studies have indicated that immunomodulatory protein from Ganoderma microsporum (GMI) inhibits oxidative stress in lung cancer cells A549 and induces cancer cell death by causing intracellular autophagy. We report cases of Microsporum audouinii infections on the scalp of three individuals from an African family, originating from Mali and residing in Guangzhou. This is the first time that M. audouinii has been reported in China. The index case involved a 2-year-old boy who presented with scalp patches and scaling for more than 1 year. Dermatological examination revealed scattered dark brown patches with scales on the scalp without noticeable alopecia or pustules. Fungal microscopy revealed the presence of Ectothrix hyphae and abundant clusters of arthroconidia. On Sabouraud Dextrose Agar, pale

BACKGROUND: Tinea capitis (T. capitis), commonly known as scalp ringworm, is a fungal infection affecting the scalp and hair. Among the causative agents, Microsporum canis (M. canis) stands out, often transmitted from cats to humans (zoonotic disease). In this study, we investigated the efficacy of Carica papaya (C. papaya), fruit extract against dermatophytes, particularly M. canis, both in vitro and in vivo. Additionally, we aimed to identify the active compounds responsible for suppressing fungal growth and assess the toxicity of C. papaya on human cells.
METHODOLOGY: It conducted in two p

ABSTRACTGenomes of strains of the zoophilic dermatophyte Microsporum canis from invasive (disseminated and subcutaneous) and noninvasive (tinea capitis) infections were compared. Especially the disseminated strain showed significant syntenic rearrangements, including multiple translocations and inversions, and numerous SNPs and Indels in comparison to the noninvasive strain. In transcriptome analysis, both invasive strains were enriched for GO pathways related to components of the membrane, iron binding and heme binding, which possibly enables them to invade deeper into dermis and blood vessel

INTRODUCTION: Dermatophytes are a closely related group of keratinophilic fungi. They encompass important etiological agents of superficial fungal infections. These fungi are able to invade keratinized tissues of humans and animals, causing dermatophytosis (ringworm) of hair, nails or skin.
THE AIM: Traditional diagnostics of ringworm is based on morphological identification of cultured fungi and is time-consuming.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we applied a method patented by Brillowska-Dabrowska and coworkers (Brillowska-Dąbrowska A, Saunte DM, Arenderup MC, 2007, Five-hour diagnosi

Dermatophytes are rarely taken into account among the causes of blepharitis. In our report, we describe a 69-year-old man and a 40-year-old woman with chronic blepharitis for 10 years and 4 years respectively, in whom we examined the scales and pulled eyelashes on direct microscopy and isolated Microsporum audouinii and Trichophyton verrrucosum in the culture. We emphasise that dermatophytes may play a role in the etiopathogenesis of chronic blepharitis. In chronic, treatment resistance blepharitis fungal infections may be considered as possible cause.

We report the case of a 25-year-old, HIV-positive patient (group IV, A, C2 clinical stage) with a widespread dermatophyte infection. He was a male gypsy with a known history of intravenous drug abuse. After an episode of cerebral toxoplasmosis for which he was treated with systemic steroids (because of cerebral oedema) he developed, over 16 days, a remarkably extensive ringworm of the trunk due to an unusual zoophilic dermatophyte, Microsporum (Trichophyton) gallinae. Human infection with this dermatophyte species is unusual: there are as few as seven proven reported cases, all of whom had loc

Dermatophytes are highly infectious pathogenic fungi that colonize keratinized tissues like skin, hair, and nails, causing superficial infections such as tinea capitis, onychomycosis, tinea corporis, and tinea pedis in humans and animals. In immunocompromised patients, they may invade deeper tissues and organs, leading to severe or life-threatening conditions if untreated or inadequately managed. While most infections respond to topical antifungals, some require complex treatment and show resistance to standard therapies. Therefore, novel antifungal agents are needed. We investigated the antid

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Microsporum gallinae is the major dermatophyte species that causes avian dermatophytosis. Disinfection plays an important role in controlling and preventing dermatophytosis; however, information about the effect of common disinfection processes on M. gallinae is limited. This study aimed to investigate the disinfection efficacy of ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, heat treatment, detergents, and germicides against infective spores (arthroconidia) and vegetative mycelia of M. gallinae.

We report a Microsporum audouinii infection in a female juvenile chimpanzee (Pan troglodytes) presenting generalized dermatitis compatible with dermatophytosis. Dermatophyte was identified by macro- and microscopic characterization of skin and scales cultures in Mycosel Agar. The topical treatment applied was effective, having the potential for dermatophytosis treatment in immunocompetent primates.

Tinea corporis caused by Microsporum canis is usually associated with exposure to animals, but outbreaks with anthropophilic transmission were described. A large outbreak in a military base was investigated. We investigated the outbreak's source and risk factors for infection in order to contain and eliminate it. All staff-members at the base were interviewed and examined. A case-control analysis of symptomatic patients was used to elucidate risk factors. Stray cats were captured and sampled. M. canis isolated from skin and fur specimens of patients and cats were genotyped by microsatellite se

BACKGROUND: Cancer metastasis is a major cause of cancer-related deaths, emphasizing the urgent need for effective therapies. Although it has been shown that GMI, a fungal protein from Ganoderma microsporum, could suppress primary tumor growth in a wide spectrum of cancer types, it is still unclear whether GMI exhibits anti-metastasis properties, particularly in lung cancers. Further investigation is needed.
AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study is to investigate the potential inhibitory effects of GMI on lung cancer metastasis in vivo. Utilizing systematic and comprehensive approa

BACKGROUND Microsporum canis is a pathogenic dermatophyte that usually colonizes animals, and secondary infection of humans comes from pets. The infected patients show hair loss with erythema and are diagnosed as having dermatophytosis, but the transmission routes of M. canis from animals to others are sometimes unclear, although they are critical to the treatment of patients and infection control. To identify the pathogens and the transmission routes, morphological observations by microscopes and conventional polymerase chain reaction (PCR) have been used; however, matrix-assisted laser desor

Ageing and chronic diseases lead to muscle loss and impair the regeneration of skeletal muscle. Thus, it's crucial to seek for effective intervention to improve the muscle regeneration. Tid1, a mitochondrial co-chaperone, is important to maintain mitochondrial membrane potential and ATP synthesis. Previously, we demonstrated that mice with skeletal muscular specific Tid1 deficiency displayed muscular dystrophy and postnatal lethality. Tid1 can interact with STAT3 protein, which also plays an important role during myogenesis. In this study, we used GMI, immunomodulatory protein of Ganoderma mic

Scutula are characteristic lesions of tinea favosa or favus; the most frequently identified causative organism is Trichophyton schoenleinii. Although scutula-like lesions were described in Microsporum gypseum infection, their presence on glabrous skin in a patient with SLE has not been reported previously. We report a case of tinea infection with scutula-like lesions caused by Microsporum gypseum in a SLE patient, who was treated with topical terbinafine cream, and the lesions resolved completely. In addition, we reviewed the reported cases about this rare clinical manifestation caused by Micr

Dermatophytosis is a prevalent fungal infection and public health burden, majorly caused by the attack of zoophilic fungi genera of Trichophyton and Microsporum. Among them, T. mentagrophytes and M. canis are the dominating pathogens that cause dermatophytosis in humans. Though anti-fungal treatments are available, the widespread drug resistance and minimal efficacy of conventional therapies cause recurring infections. In addition, prolonged anti-fungal medications induce several systemic side effects, including hepatotoxicity and leucopenia. The anti-dermatophytic formulation of biocompatible

Microsporum gypseum is a keratinophilic fungi grouped under dermatophytes infecting skin, hair and nail portions in human and animals causing tinea corporis, tinea facei and tinea capitis. As both human and fungi are eukaryotes, the available drugs for treating dermatophytes produce some side effects due to drug interaction with human also. Apart from this, the gut microbiota has a very big role in the health of human which should not be affected by the drugs. Hence this study focused on finding a target which is unique and essential to M. gypseum and non-homologous to human and gut microbiota
