STUDY DESIGN: Literature review.
OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to provide a comprehensive outline of spinal injuries that may transpire over the course of military service from traumatic to repetitive stress injuries and chronic sequelae. We considered studies that assessed spinal injuries in combat and non-combat settings as reported in the literature over the last 15 to 20 years.
BACKGROUND: Military service places servicemembers under substantial physical demands, while also exposing them to dangerous, unpredictable environments. As a result, servicemembers are at an increased ris

OBJECTIVE: Few studies have evaluated pediatric vaccination coverage in the Military Health System, although some evidence suggests lower than ideal coverage. This study assessed vaccine completion and timeliness among military dependents through age 24 months.
METHODS: Children born at military hospitals from 2010 through 2019 were identified using Department of Defense Birth and Infant Health Research program data. Vaccine completion and timeliness were assessed for diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis; polio; measles, mumps, and rubella; hepatitis B; Haemophilus influenzae type b; varicella;

PURPOSE: The aim was to determine the association between the receipt of naloxone and emergency department (ED) visits within 60 days after the receipt of an opioid.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort of individuals 18 years of age or above, enrolled in TRICARE, and were dispensed an opioid at any time from January 1, 2019, through September 30, 2020 was identified within the United States Military Health System. Individuals receiving naloxone within 5 days of the opioid dispensing date were propensity score matched with individuals receiving opioids only. A logistic regression was used to estim

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a major public health problem among U.S. military veterans. However, contemporary, population-based data on the prevalence, correlates, and mental health burden of homelessness among veterans are lacking.
METHODS: Data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, a nationally representative survey of veterans (n = 4069). Analyses examined the prevalence and correlates of homelessness, as well as the independent associations between homelessness and current probable psychiatric conditions, suicidality, and functioning.
RESULTS:

Military veterans with histories of military sexual trauma (MST) are at risk for several negative mental health outcomes and report perceived barriers to treatment engagement. To inform interventions to promote gender-sensitive access to MST-related care, we conducted an exploratory, multiple-group latent class analysis of negative beliefs about MST-related care. Participants were U.S. veterans (N = 1,185) who screened positive for MST within the last 2 months and reported a perceived need for MST-related treatment. Associations between class membership, mental health screenings, logistical ba

INTRODUCTION: This paper presents the burden of mental health cases throughout UK military exercise SAIF SAREEA 3 (SS3), a low-tempo armoured brigade exercise in Oman from June to November 2018, and aims to discuss ways that mental health may be better managed on future large exercises.
METHODS: A retrospective review of all attendances at army medical facilities and relevant computerised medical records was undertaken.
RESULTS: 14 mental health cases were identified, which required 51 follow-up presentations throughout the duration of SS3. This represented 1.2% of all first patient presenta

INTRODUCTION: Incomplete or inadequate provision of contraceptive services to servicewomen can have a profound impact on military health, readiness, and financial outcomes. This study examined the reproductive health practices and perceptions among family medicine physicians caring for servicewomen.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted an anonymous survey of 568 registered attendees at the March, 2018 Uniformed Services Academy of Family Physicians annual meeting. The response rate was 52.8% and 69% of responders met inclusion criteria.
RESULTS: Our sample of family medicine physicians was 58

INTRODUCTION: Safety Aid Reduction Treatment for Anxiety and Related Disorders (START) is a transdiagnostic group therapy found to reduce self-reported anxiety symptoms among veterans. The Practice Based Implementation (PBI) Network, a program designed to assess small-scale implementation pilots of mental health therapies and trainings, partnered with START experts and military mental health (MH) clinics to implement START. Evaluation of perceptions of facilitators and barriers in these trials is important before considering wider Military Health System (MHS) adoption.

BACKGROUND: This study focuses on factors that may disproportionately affect female veterans' mental health, compared to men, and is part of a larger study assessing the prevalence of mental health disorders and treatment seeking among formerly deployed US military service members.
METHODS: We surveyed a random sample of 1,730 veterans who were patients in a large non-VA hospital system in the US. Based on previous research, women were hypothesized to be at higher risk for psychological problems. We adjusted our results for confounding factors, including history of trauma, childhood abuse, co

During the American occupation of Japan (1945-1952), young public health officers from the US Army Medical Corps were posted in local US Army military government teams. These young doctors (aged 25 to 27 years), who had not absorbed the strong anti-Japanese tradition of the US military during World War II, seem to have alleviated the initial resentment felt by the Japanese toward the new governors of their homeland. The case of the Kyoto Military Government Team illustrates the Kyoto citizenry's positive view of some American-directed public health measures. The team's services helped to count

INTRODUCTION: The study "The psychological and physical health and well-being of New Zealand contemporary Veterans" represents one of the few large population studies conducted on contemporary Veterans in New Zealand. Included in this survey was an open-ended question allowing respondents to articulate their thoughts, opinions, or feedback on the Veteran experience.
METHODS: Responses were analyzed using qualitative content analysis framework informed by Mayring's (2022) eight-step content analysis process. A hybrid deductive-inductive approach was used to generate sub-themes from participant

INTRODUCTION: Serving military personnel and military veterans have been identified as having a high prevalence of mental disorders. Since 1985, UK patients' primary healthcare (PHC) medical records contain Read Codes (now being replaced by Systematized Nomenclature of Medicine - Clinical Terms (SNOMED CT) codes) that mark characteristics such as diagnosis, ethnicity and therapeutic interventions. This English study accesses a cohort profile of British Armed Forces veterans to examine the diagnosed common mental disorders by using PHC records.
METHODS: This analysis has been drawn from initia

INTRODUCTION: Reports of sexual assault (SA) in the U.S. Military have increased in recent years. Given the deleterious effects of military SA, there remains a need for large-scale studies to assess SA-related health care utilization among active duty service members (ADSMs). The present study, therefore, utilized Military Health System (MHS) data to determine the prevalence of SA-related care, sociodemographic characteristics of ADSMs receiving said care, and the type of provider seen during the initial SA-related health encounter.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Utilizing the MHS Data Repository and

OBJECTIVE: While Latinx Americans in the general population are more likely to have obesity than non-Hispanic Whites, limited research has examined ethnic differences in obesity and its correlates among military veterans. To address this gap, we examined the prevalence, physical health and functional correlates of obesity in a population-based sample of Latinx and White U.S. military veterans.
METHODS: Data were analyzed from the 2019-2020 National Health and Resilience in Veterans Study, which surveyed a nationally representative sample of veterans. Bivariate and multivariate analyses were c

Although the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) provides free health care related to military sexual trauma (MST), many veterans forgo or delay such care, underscoring the need for research aimed at understanding MST survivors' perceptions and concerns regarding VHA care. This study employed a qualitative phenomenological approach to describe MST survivors': (a) perceptions of VHA care, (b) concerns about VHA care, and (c) suggestions for how VHA can facilitate recovery from MST. Fifty veterans (32 women, 18 men) with histories of MST participated in semistructured interviews. Transcripts we

Tuberculosis (TB) is a known occupational risk to health workers. Identifying risk factors in health care settings is critical to the prevention of TB for health workers and patients. In 2014, we carried out a TB screening and survey for 902 health workers from 14 selected military hospitals to determine the prevalence rate of latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) as well as occupational risk factors. Of all subjects, 19.5% reported having provided TB patient care for 1 year or more (176/902), and 26.9% (243/902) were positive for the tuberculin skin test (TST) (10 mm or more of induration). Ad

OBJECTIVES: In 2003, it was reported that motor neurone disease was linked to military service in the 1990-1991 Gulf War. A large study in the US confirmed an association with military service but found no association with specific conflicts or length of service. Non-veteran studies have suggested an association with physical activity, smoking and other risk factors. We used data from the Scottish Veterans Health Study to investigate the association between motor neurone disease and military service in UK veterans.
METHODS: Retrospective cohort study of 57,000 veterans born 1945-1985, and 173

BACKGROUND: Since 2001, more than 2.5 million United States military personnel have been deployed for combat. Over one million have served multiple deployments. Combat generally involved repeated exposure to highly traumatic events. Personnel were also victims of military sexual trauma (MST), a major risk factor for psychiatric illness. Most survivors do not seek or receive mental health care. Stigma is one of the main barriers to that care.
AIMS: To explore the impact of stigma on personnel with psychiatric illness, and suggest some innovative ways to potentially reduce stigma and improve ca
