Histamine and sera complement were followed-up in patients with chronic urticaria during oral provoking test to cow milk. Three patients with a positive history to cow milk sensitisation showed a significant decrease in C3 concentration within 180 minutes of the test. This was followed by increased histamine and skin eruption. According to our results (skin test reactivity and clinical evaluation of the provoking test) several mechanisms were involved in the sensitisation to cow milk in our patients.

Background: Sporadic reports have been published with regard to allergic reactions in patients with bovine milk allergy after receiving parenteral lactose-containing methylprednisolone. Persistent milk allergy is a risk factor for other atopic diseases, in which corticosteroids, e.g., methylprednisolone, are commonly an adjunctive treatment. Laboratory investigations to validate the presence of residual milk protein as the cause for reactions are scarce. Thus, individualized recommendations for the use of methylprednisolone in patients with milk allergy remain undefined. Objective: We hypothes

OBJECTIVE: To study the association between maternal Th1/Th2 immune level at different pregnancy stages and cow's milk protein allergy (CMPA) in infants.
METHODS: The healthy women with a singleton pregnancy, as well as their offspring, who attended Yidu Central Hospital of Weifang and Qingzhou Traditional Chinese Medicine Hospital from July 2016 to December 2018 were enrolled. The maternal levels of interleukin-2 (IL-2), interferon gamma (IFN-γ), interleukin-4 (IL-4), and interleukin-10 (IL-10) at the second and third trimesters of pregnancy were measured. A CMPA questionnaire survey was con

We present a case of a 9-year-old girl with pork-cat syndrome (PCS) who experienced repeated episodes of urticaria and gastrointestinal symptoms after ingesting pork, beef, and milk since she was 7 years old. Her family has had a cat since she was born. Antigen-specific IgE tests showed high values against Fel d 1, Fel d 2, Sus s 1, Bos d 6, beef, pork, milk, dog dander, and cat dander. However, an antigen-specific IgE test performed in infancy was negative for cow's milk. The skin prick test was positive for raw pork, raw beef, and milk, but these reactions were attenuated by heating. Immunob

Food origin seems to have a special place in the etiology of infantile urticaria, as it forms 62% of a series of 51 observations of urticaria in children, greater than drug etiology (22%), physical urticaria (8%) and contact urticaria (8%). Distinction between true and false food allergy, which is important for prognosis and evolution, puts true food allergy (55%) in the lead before false (7%). A reason for this, the atopic concept, was seen in 67% of the food urticarias, corresponding apparently to true food allergy. If in the majority of these cases the pathway of sensitizations was unknown,

BACKGROUND: Breastfeeding is the most common way of feeding infants. Human milk contains nutrients which are necessary to provide proper growth of a child. Nowadays there aren't any recommendations to follow elimination diet in order to decrease the risk of allergy or baby colic. Only the occurrence of health problems such as lactose intolerance or cow's milk protein allergy in breastfeeding mother or infant should be a reason for eliminating dairy products from diet. It seems to be important to explore the reasons and the frequency of following milk-free diet by breastfeeding women.

Cow's milk (CM) is a healthy food consumed worldwide by individuals of all ages. Unfortunately, "lactase-deficient" individuals cannot digest milk's main carbohydrate, lactose, depriving themselves of highly beneficial milk proteins like casein, lactoalbumin, and lactoglobulin due to lactose intolerance (LI), while other individuals develop allergies specifically against these proteins (CMPA). The management of these conditions differs, and an inappropriate diagnosis or treatment may have significant implications for the patients, especially if they are infants or very young children, resultin

The development of early-onset cow's milk protein allergy and atopic dermatitis during the first months of life is multifactorial, including both genetic and nutritional aspects. This study aims to assess the impact of different feeding patterns on the incidence of cow's milk protein allergy, atopic dermatitis, and growth among infants with a family history of allergy. A total of 551 high-risk infants were randomly recruited from 3 European countries in three feeding regimens: exclusive breastfeeding, partially hydrolyzed formula, or standard formula with intact protein either exclusively or s

In this review, clinical and epidemiological aspects of milk allergy along with current data on the structure and function of the main cow's milk allergens, are presented. Milk allergy is the most frequent food allergy in childhood. One of the reasons why allergy to cow's milk shows its highest prevalence in children is its early introduction into the diets of infants when breast feeding is not possible. The major allergens are caseins, a-lactalbumin and β-lactoglobulin, but allergies to other minor proteins (immunoglobulins, bovine serum albumin) have also been reported. Milk allergenicity ca

BACKGROUND: Chronic diarrhea is the most common gastrointestinal symptom of intolerance of cow's milk among children. On the basis of a prior open study, we hypothesized that intolerance of cow's milk can also cause severe perianal lesions with pain on defecation and consequent constipation in young children.
METHODS: We performed a double-blind, crossover study comparing cow's milk with soy milk in 65 children (age range, 11 to 72 months) with chronic constipation (defined as having one bowel movement every 3 to 15 days). All had been referred to a pediatric gastroenterology clinic and had p

Several studies performed in high-risk babies have demonstrated a significant reduction in the prevalence and severity of atopic diseases with dietary and environmental manipulations. It has been demonstrated that prolonged breast-feeding and the avoidance of cow's milk, eggs and fish during the first three months of lactation significantly decrease both the prevalence and the severity of atopic disease up to the age of 5 years. We have shown a significant reduction in both the prevalence and the incidence of atopic dermatitis, food allergy and asthma in high-risk children followed up to the a

β-Lactoglobulin (BLG), a major allergen of cow's milk, was conjugated with the N-hydroxysuccinimide ester of the amylose-glycylglycine adduct (AG-ONSu) to reduce its immunogenicity, and the biochemical and immunological properties of the resulting conjugate (AG-BLG) were studied. The conjugate was prepared by modifying BLG with AG-ONSu, and was purified in a Sephadex G-100 column. The analytical data for AG-BLG indicated that 10.5 moles of AG-ONSu, with a mean molecular weight of 2,800, was covalently attached to the amino groups of the BLG molecule. Conjugation with AG-ONSu greatly decreased

The large-scale use of cow's milk in infant feeding is less than one hundred years old. Much progress has been made by the manufacturers of proprietary formulas during this period to make their products safer. Although the current formulas provide an excellent "substitute" for the majority of infants, problems still remain, and it is necessary for every pediatrician and gastroenterologist to be aware of these. The purposes of this article are to review the adverse effects of nonhuman milk on the gastrointestinal tract, to examine the underlying mechanisms, and hopefully to stimulate further th

OBJECTIVE: To analyze possible risk factors for diarrhea in breast fed infants and provide evidences for prevention and treatment of diarrhea, reducing allergic and other diseases in infants and for renewing the definition of "physiological diarrhea".
METHODS: Totally 334 infants (207 boys and 127 girls, mean age 3.0 +/- 0.4 months) who were solely breast fed and seen between August 2004 and June 2006 at the outpatient clinic of the Department of Pediatrics, the 3rd Hospital of Peking University were enrolled in this study. BACKGROUND: Oral food challenge (OFC) protocols in food protein-induced enterocolitis syndrome (FPIES) often select starting doses with consideration of prior reaction severity, implying that dose may influence reaction intensity; however, patient-level evidence linking antigen dose to reaction profiles remains limited.
OBJECTIVE: To characterize threshold heterogeneity and compare clinical reaction profiles between diagnostic and reactive threshold OFCs within individual patients.
METHODS: In this prospective study, 54 infants with OFC-confirmed FPIES (egg yolk, 36; cow's milk, 18) underwen

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Component-resolved diagnostics (CRD) have garnered a lot of attention in recent years in the diagnosis of food allergies. We aimed to investigate sensitization against cow's milk and egg white components, and to study the clinical usefulness of serum food-specific immunoglobulin E (sIgE) to cow's milk and egg white components in Thai children with cow's milk and egg allergies.
METHOD: Children with IgE-mediated cow's milk and/or egg allergy were enrolled. Clinical reactions were determined. Specific IgE against cow's milk, egg white, alpha-lactalbumin (ALA), beta-lac

BACKGROUND: The measurement of specific serum immunoglobulin E (sIgE) and the skin prick test (SPT) are accepted tools in the diagnostic work-up of suspected food allergy. Often only one of the methods is used to determine sensitization; however, it is still under debate whether these two methods can be used interchangeably.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate the concordance of SPT and sIgE serum assays with regard to suspected food allergy.
METHODS: In 395 children referred to our clinic with suspected cow's milk allergy and in 268 children with suspected hen's egg allergy specific immunoglobulin E
