Perceived discrimination among racial and ethnic minority drug users and the association with health care utilization.

People who use drugs (PWUDs) are at increased risk for several medical conditions, yet they delay seeking medical care and utilize emergency departments (EDs) as their primary source of care. Limited research regarding perceived discrimination and PWUDs' use of health care services exists. This study explores the association between interpersonal and institutional racial/ethnic and drug use discrimination in health care settings and health care utilization among respondents (N = 192) recruited from methadone maintenance treatment programs (36%), HIV primary care clinics (35%), and syringe exch

Menstrual irregularity from hormonal contraception: a cause of reproductive health concerns in minority adolescent young women.

CONTEXT: Adolescents are frequent users of hormonal contraception (HC), yet their adherence to these methods is often poor. Concerns about side effects, especially those affecting the menstrual system, are often given as reasons for contraceptive nonadherence or discontinuation. We sought to identify teens' concerns and misperceptions about the menstrual-related side effects of HC. METHODS: Open focus groups were conducted with both sexually active and virgin adolescent women aged 12-18 years who were recruited from the Philadelphia area. The adolescents did not have to be contraceptive users

Reassessing cardiometabolic health disparities among young adult sexual minority women: Evidence from a population-based cohort.

PURPOSE: We compared objective measures of cardiometabolic health (CMH) between women who identify as lesbian/gay or bisexual (LGB) and women who identify as heterosexual. In addition, we aimed to test whether group differences in stress reactivity partially explained disparities in CMH health. METHODS: Participants from a longitudinal study were identified for enrollment in 2017. The LGB group self-identified as LGB in 2017 (n = 239), and the heterosexual group identified as straight or heterosexual in each year that sexual identity was asked (study years 2010-2017) (n = 160). CMH was assess

Sexual stigma as a psychosocial mediator between racialized status and mental health in sexual minority men.

PURPOSE: Sexual stigma remains a critical public health concern for gay, bisexual, and other sexual minority men (GBSMM), yet its role in shaping mental health disparities across racialized groups is not well understood. This study examined whether internalized, enacted, and perceived sexual stigmas mediate the relationship between racialized status and mental health outcomes. METHODS: Data were drawn from the Generations study, a nationally representative longitudinal study of sexual minorities in the United States. The analytic sample included GBSMM assessed across three waves. Participants

Restrictive Masculinity Norms and Behavioral Health Outcomes Among Rhode Island Sexual and Gender Minority Young Adults.

INTRODUCTION: Restrictive masculinity norms (RMNs), characterized by emotional suppression, dominance, and risk-taking, have been linked to adverse health among cisgender heterosexual men. Little is known about how RMNs operate among sexual and gender minority (SGM) populations, particularly transgender young adults.  Methods: Data were from the 2024 Rhode Island Young Adult Survey, a cross-sectional, web-based survey of adults aged 18-25 years. Analyses were restricted to SGM participants (n=438), with sub-analyses among transgender young adults (n=100). RMNs were measured using a 12-item que

Cardiovascular health and gender minority stress in transgender and gender diverse adults: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and gender diverse (TGD) people may take gender affirming hormone therapy (GAHT) to affirm their gender identity and improve quality of life. The cardiovascular health (CVH) impacts of GAHT are not well described. TGD individuals may also experience gender minority stress (GMS), typically caused by discrimination and transphobia, which may adversely affect CVH. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the CVH and gender minority stress of TGD adults receiving GAHT. METHODS: This observational study was approved by the Emory University Institutional Review Board. TGD ad

Minority stress, mental health, and substance use in transgender youth: the moderating role of positive affect.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationships between gender minority stressors and mental health outcomes among transgender and gender diverse (TGD) youth and explore the moderating role of positive affect. METHOD: Baseline data of 315 TGD youth (ages 12-20 years old) from the Trans Youth Care-United States study comprised the analytic sample. Youth completed three subscales of the Gender Minority Stress and Resilience Measure for Adolescents (GMSR-A; nondisclosure of gender identity/gender history, negative future expectations, and internalized transphobia), Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II),

Sexual and gender minority adverse childhood experiences (SGM-ACEs), perceived social support, and adult mental health.

BACKGROUND: Building on decades of research into the long-term developmental impacts of adverse childhood experiences (ACEs), researchers have called for expanding the ACEs framework to include experiences specific to minoritized identities. Recent empirical research has led to the development of a measure of sexual and gender minority adverse childhood experiences (SGM-ACEs). Within the SGM-specific ACEs framework, research on the long-term impact to adult mental health and the role of perceived social support are not well studied. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this paper was two-fold. First, ex

Identity and Relationship-Based Discrimination, and Mental Health in a Sample of Sexual Minority Male Couples.

PURPOSE: The study explored the unique associations of individual identity-based discrimination and relationship-based discrimination with mental health among sexual minority male couples. It also examined whether couples' relationship functioning moderated associations between relationship-based discrimination, the experience of one's romantic relationship being devalued, and mental health outcomes. METHODS: Baseline dyadic data drawn from a clinical trial involving 70 couples (N= 140) were analyzed using Actor-Partner Interdependence Modeling. The sample consisted of sexual minority men, of

Minority stress, psychosocial health, and survival among gay and bisexual men before, during, and after incarceration.

Gay and bisexual men (GBM) are incarcerated at nearly twice the rate as the general United States male population. Minority stress, namely the unique social stressors related to anti-GBM stigma and discrimination, is central to GBM's experiences in ways that might put them at risk of incarceration and psychosocial risks during and after incarceration. In this qualitative study, we examined how GBM navigate minority stress and how this navigation influences their psychosocial health before, during, and after incarceration. We conducted semi-structured, in-depth interviews with 20 formerly incar

Mental health and gender transitioning among hijra individuals: a qualitative approach using the minority stress model.

This study used the minority stress model to explore experiences of gender transitioning among hijra (trans woman) individuals in Mumbai, India. It used a qualitative life history calendar approach to examine transitioning as a critical life experience in a chronological manner. Twenty hijra-identified persons were recruited using purposive snowball sampling and interviewed at a community-based organisation. Data were analysed using thematic analysis. Participants reported diverse experiences living as hijra and shared perspectives on transitioning. Most participants identified to undergo tran

Weight-based victimization among sexual and gender minority adolescents: Implications for substance use and mental health.

OBJECTIVE: Weight-based victimization (WBV) involves being the target of intentional physical, verbal, or psychological harm because of one's body weight. Youth experience harmful health consequences from WBV, but this literature has neglected sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth, despite their high rates of overweight and obesity, and mental health problems. The present study assessed health behaviors (substance use), self-rated health, perceived control over stressors, depressive symptoms and self-esteem as a function of WBV in a large, national sample of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, tra

Minority stress and mental health among Dutch LGBs: examination of differences between sex and sexual orientation.

Minority stress is often cited as an explanation for greater mental health problems among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) individuals than heterosexual individuals. However, studies focusing on sex or sexual orientation differences in level of minority stress and its impact on mental health are scarce, even more so outside the United States. Performing secondary analyses on the data of a Dutch population study on sexual health, the present study examines the robustness of the minority stress model by explaining mental health problems among men and women with mostly or only same-sex sexual att

Cardiometabolic Risk, Minority Stress, and Resilience in the Study of Stress, Gender, and Minority Status (SGM SOL): An Ancillary Study of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos.

The minority stress model posits that sexual and gender minority (SGM) adults experience excess stress that worsens health, and resilience factors mitigate these effects of excess stress on health. This study evaluated the associations of minority stress and resilience factors with cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk among Hispanic/Latino SGM and non-SGM adults. Between 2020 and 2024, 1108 adults in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos responded to sexual orientation and gender identity questions, provided CVD risk biomarker data, and completed self-reported measures of stress an

Socioecological Perspectives on Healing After Child Sexual Abuse: An Application of the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities Research Framework.

Children who experience childhood sexual abuse (CSA) and their non-offending family members are frequently referred to Children's Advocacy Centers (CACs) for multisector service coordination and evidence-based treatments. Little is known about how interactions with the CAC model impact healing after CSA from a socioecological context (child, parent/caregiver, family). This qualitative study explored facilitators and barriers to healing after CSA within a socioecological context among families that received care at an urban Midwestern CAC. Semi-structured interviews (n = 15) were conducted with

How can the nursing profession help reduce sexual and gender minority related health disparities: Recommendations from the National Nursing LGBTQ Health Summit.

BACKGROUND: Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer (LGBTQ) people, also commonly referred to as sexual and gender minorities (SGMs), live in every part of the United States and encompass all races and/or ethnicities, religions, and social classes. Major reports from various sources document higher rates of health issues (e.g., substance abuse, depression, suicidality, cardiovascular disease) among SGMs than heterosexuals. Chronic stress related to marginalization and discrimination is a key contributor to these disparities. The nursing profession has paid relatively little attention to
