Your smiles inspired my smiles: the interpersonal neural coupling of positive emotion contagion during social interactions.

Emotional contagion refers a process that by which the emotions of a perceiver become more similar to those of others as a result of exposure to these emotions. The present study investigated the behavioral and interpersonal neural coupling mechanisms underlying positive emotional contagion. We recruited forty-six stranger dyads and created an emotional contagion task using the fNIRS-based hyper-scanning technique to track brain activities of interactive partners (the sender, the perceiver), examining brain regions such as the prefrontal cortex and temporo-parietal junction, which are parts of

Brain activation related to the perception of minimal agency cues: the role of the mirror system.

Recent fMRI studies indicate that the posterior superior temporal sulcus (pSTS) and the mirror system are involved in analyzing goal-directed actions performed by non-human objects. However, these studies have some limitations: the animations showed moving shapes that resemble humans and human movement, or showed the interaction of two moving shapes rather than one alone. This may have prompted participants to assume a human agent instead of an object. To avoid this potential confound, in this study, animations showed a small circular shape (agent) jumping toward a bigger circular shape (goal)

Neural, physiological and behavioural correlates of empathy for pain in Tourette syndrome.

Persons with Tourette syndrome show altered social behaviours, such as echophenomena and increased personal distress in emotional situations. These symptoms may reflect an overactive mirror neuron system, causing both increased automatic imitation and a stronger tendency to share others' emotions. To test this, we measured the individual level of echophenomena with a video protocol and experimentally induced empathy for pain in 21 participants with Tourette syndrome and 25 matched controls. In the empathy for pain paradigm, pictures of hands and feet in painful or neutral situations were prese

Modulation of sensorimotor cortical dynamics and proprioceptive processing induced by virtual reality-based mirror feedback during bilateral robot-assisted arm movement.

This study investigated frequency-specific cortical activity associated with different mirror feedback (MF) tasks during bilateral robot-assisted arm movement, using a virtual reality-based mirror system and electroencephalography. Eighteen healthy right-handed participants performed bimanual robot-assisted wrist-extension movements, with the passive hand driven by the active hand via a bimanual robot-assisted training device. Four experimental conditions were tested: congruent MF, incongruent MF, static virtual mirrored hand, and blank screen. Our results demonstrated that both congruent and

Modeling RTT Syndrome by iPSC-Derived Neurons from Male and Female Patients with Heterogeneously Severe Hot-Spot MECP2 Variants.

Rett syndrome caused by MECP2 variants is characterized by a heterogenous clinical spectrum accounted for in 60% of cases by hot-spot variants. Focusing on the most frequent variants, we generated in vitro iPSC-neurons from the blood of RTT girls with p.Arg133Cys and p.Arg255*, associated to mild and severe phenotype, respectively, and of an RTT male harboring the close to p.Arg255*, p.Gly252Argfs*7 variant. Truncated MeCP2 proteins were revealed by Western blot and immunofluorescence analysis. We compared the mutant versus control neurons at 42 days for morphological parameters and at 120 day

Shared mapping of own and others' bodies in visuotactile bimodal area of monkey parietal cortex.

Parietal cortex contributes to body representations by integrating visual and somatosensory inputs. Because mirror neurons in ventral premotor and parietal cortices represent visual images of others' actions on the intrinsic motor representation of the self, this matching system may play important roles in recognizing actions performed by others. However, where and how the brain represents others' bodies and correlates self and other body representations remain unclear. We expected that a population of visuotactile neurons in simian parietal cortex would represent not only own but others' body

Plasticity of sodium channel expression in DRG neurons in the chronic constriction injury model of neuropathic pain.

Previous studies have shown that transection of the sciatic nerve induces dramatic changes in sodium currents of axotomized dorsal root ganglion (DRG) neurons, which are paralleled by significant changes in the levels of transcripts of several sodium channels expressed in these neurons. Sodium currents that are resistant to tetrodotoxin (TTX-R) and the transcripts of two TTX-R sodium channels are significantly attenuated, while a rapidly repriming tetrodotoxin-sensitive (TTX-S) current emerges and the transcripts of alpha-III sodium channel, which produce a TTX-S current when expressed in oocy

Event-Related Desynchronization During Mirror Visual Feedback: A Comparison of Older Adults and People After Stroke.

Event-related desynchronization (ERD), as a proxy for mirror neuron activity, has been used as a neurophysiological marker for motor execution after mirror visual feedback (MVF). Using EEG, this study investigated ERD upon the immediate effects of single-session MVF in unimanual arm movements compared with the ERD effects occurring without a mirror, in two groups: stroke patients with left hemiplegia and their healthy counterparts. During EEG recordings, each group performed one session of mirror therapy training in three task conditions: with a mirror, with no mirror, and with a covered mirro

Emotions in action through the looking glass.

The paper aims at highlighting how our primary understanding of others' actions is rooted in the mirror mechanism. To this end, the anatomical architecture of the mirror neuron system for action will be outlined as well as its role in grasping goals and intentions in others' motor behaviour. One further step through the looking glass of social cognition will be referring to the ubiquitous emotional colouring of actions and considering its links with the motor domain. This will allow a clearer perspective on the mechanism underlying our abilities for emotional understanding and on cases in whic

Language for action: Motor resonance during the processing of human and robotic voices.

In this fMRI study we evaluated whether the auditory processing of action verbs pronounced by a human or a robotic voice in the imperative mood differently modulates the activation of the mirror neuron system (MNs). The study produced three results. First, the activation pattern found during listening to action verbs was very similar in both the robot and human conditions. Second, the processing of action verbs compared to abstract verbs determined the activation of the fronto-parietal circuit classically involved during the action goal understanding. Third, and most importantly, listening to

Where there is a goal, there is a way: what, why and how the parieto-frontal mirror network can mediate imitative behaviours.

The relationships between mirror neurons (MNs) and motor imitation, and its clinical implications in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have been widely investigated; however, the literature remains—at least partially—controversial. In this review we support a multi-level action understanding model focusing on the mirror-based understanding. We review the functional role of the parieto-frontal MNs (PFMN) network claiming that PFMNs function cannot be limited to imitation nor can imitation be explained solely by the activity of PFMNs. The distinction between movement, motor act and motor action is

Role of perfumes in pathogenesis of autism.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are developmental conditions characterized by deficits in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication, and obsessive/stereotyped patterns of behavior. Although there is no reliable neurophysiological marker associated with ASDs, dysfunction of the parieto-frontal mirror neuron system and underdeveloped olfactory bulb (OB) has been associated with the disorder. It has been reported that the number of children who have ASD has increased considerably since the early 1990 s. In developed countries, it is now reported that 1-1.5% of children have ASD, and

Behavioral patterns and lesion sites associated with impaired processing of lexical and conceptual knowledge of actions.

To further investigate the neural substrates of lexical and conceptual knowledge of actions, we administered a battery of six tasks to 226 brain-damaged patients with widely distributed lesions in the left and right cerebral hemispheres. The tasks probed lexical and conceptual knowledge of actions in a variety of verbal and non-verbal ways, including naming, word-picture matching, attribute judgments involving both words and pictures, and associative comparisons involving both words and pictures. Of the 226 patients who were studied, 61 failed one or more of the six tasks, with four patients b

Selective neuronal vulnerability of human hippocampal CA1 neurons: lesion evolution, temporal course, and pattern of hippocampal damage in diffusion-weighted MR imaging.

The CA1 (cornu ammonis) region of hippocampus is selectively vulnerable to a variety of metabolic and cytotoxic insults, which is mirrored in a delayed neuronal death of CA1 neurons. The basis and mechanisms of this regional susceptibility of CA1 neurons are poorly understood, and the correlates in human diseases affecting the hippocampus are not clear. Adopting a translational approach, the lesion evolution, temporal course, pattern of diffusion changes, and damage in hippocampal CA1 in acute neurologic disorders were studied using high-resolution magnetic resonance imaging. In patients with

A functional magnetic resonance imaging study of visuomotor processing in a virtual reality-based paradigm: Rehabilitation Gaming System.

The Rehabilitation Gaming System (RGS) has been designed as a flexible, virtual-reality (VR)-based device for rehabilitation of neurological patients. Recently, training of visuomotor processing with the RGS was shown to effectively improve arm function in acute and chronic stroke patients. It is assumed that the VR-based training protocol related to RGS creates conditions that aid recovery by virtue of the human mirror neuron system. Here, we provide evidence for this assumption by identifying the brain areas involved in controlling the catching of approaching colored balls in the virtual env

Music: a unique window into the world of autism.

Understanding emotions is fundamental to our ability to navigate the complex world of human social interaction. Individuals with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) experience difficulties with the communication and understanding of emotions within the social domain. Their ability to interpret other people's nonverbal, facial, and bodily expressions of emotion is strongly curtailed. However, there is evidence to suggest that many individuals with ASD show a strong and early preference for music and are able to understand simple and complex musical emotions in childhood and adulthood. The dissociat

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and mirror movements in a patient with polymicrogyria.

We report on a case of polymicrogyria with benign childhood epilepsy and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). While performing dexterity tasks with either hand, strong unsustained mirror movements of the unintended hand were observed. The patient was seen over a period of three years and, as often seen in ALS, there was a moderate progress of the motor neuron disease affecting the upper and lower motor neuron in an asymmetrical manner. In addition, more rapidly progressive bulbar symptoms could be observed by the clinical and neurophysiological examination. MRI revealed polymicrogyria of the r

Expression of the KAL gene in multiple neuronal sites during chicken development.

The human KAL gene is responsible for the X chromosome-linked Kallmann syndrome. A partial cDNA sequence from the chicken KAL homologue was determined and used to study expression of the KAL gene, by in situ hybridization, during chicken development, from day 6 of incubation. The KAL gene is mainly expressed in neurons of the central nervous system during the second half of embryonic life. High levels of transcript were detected in mitral neurons of the olfactory bulbs, in striatal neurons, in Purkinje cells of the cerebellum, in retinal neurons, and in isolated neurons of the brainstem and sp

Interpersonal motor resonance in autism spectrum disorder: evidence against a global "mirror system" deficit.

The mirror neuron hypothesis of autism is highly controversial, in part because there are conflicting reports as to whether putative indices of mirror system activity are actually deficient in autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Recent evidence suggests that a typical putative mirror system response may be seen in people with an ASD when there is a degree of social relevance to the visual stimuli used to elicit that response. Individuals with ASD (n = 32) and matched neurotypical controls (n = 32) completed a transcranial magnetic stimulation (TMS) experiment in which the left primary motor cortex
