The tendency of honey bees, Apis mellifera L, to become infested with tracheal mites, Acarapis woodi (Rennie), was measured in six different types of F1 colonies. The colonies were produced by mating a stock (Buckfast) known to resist mite infestation to each of five commercially available stocks and to a stock known to be susceptible to mites. Young uninfested bees from progeny and parent colonies were simultaneously exposed to mites in infested colonies, then retrieved and dissected to determine resultant mite infestations. Reduced infestations similar to but numerically greater than those o

The Kanzawa spider mite, Tetranychus kanzawai, is a polyphagous herbivore that feeds on various plant families, including the Leguminacae. Scars made by the mite on lima bean leaves (Phaseolus lunatus) were classified into two types: white and red. We obtained two strains of mites--"White" and "Red"--by selecting individual mites based on the color of the scars. Damage made by the Red strain induced the expression of genes for both basic chitinase, which was downstream of the jasmonic acid (JA) signaling pathway, and acidic chitinase, which was downstream of the salicylic acid (SA) signaling p

Although adverse effects on the welfare, skin pathology and host immune responses of ovine psoroptic mange are well described, there is only limited research on the impact on the performance of the animals and underlying pathogenicity. To provide objective data on effects of the disease at organismal level, weights of organs and tissues of sheep included in a parasiticide study with groups of mange-infested, mange-infested and treated and non-infested animals were evaluated. For the study, 48 young Merino sheep were formed randomly into three equal-sized groups on sex and body weight - to deve

The hair follicle mites Demodex folliculorum and Demodex brevis and their role in the pathogenesis of rosacea have been the subject of much debate in the past. We studied the prevalence of Demodex mites in facial skin biopsies obtained from 80 patients with rosacea, 40 with facial eczematous eruption and 40 with lupus erythematosus discoides. The mite prevalence in the rosacea group (51%) was significantly higher than in the rest of the study population (eczema 28% and lupus discoides 31%). Demodex mites were found on all facial sites. The most infested areas in the whole study group were the

BACKGROUND: Managed, feral and wild populations of European honey bee subspecies, Apis mellifera, are currently facing severe colony losses globally. There is consensus that the ectoparasitic mite Varroa destructor, that switched hosts from the Eastern honey bee Apis cerana to the Western honey bee A. mellifera, is a key factor driving these losses. For >20 years, breeding efforts have not produced European honey bee colonies that can survive infestations without the need for mite control. However, at least three populations of European honey bees have developed this ability by means of natura

The ectoparasitic mite, Varroa destructor, shifted host from the eastern honeybee, Apis cerana, to the western honeybee, Apis mellifera. Whereas the original host survives infestations by this parasite, they are lethal to colonies of its new host. Here, we investigated a population of A. cerana naturally infested by the V. destructor Korea haplotype that gave rise to the globally invasive mite lineage. Our aim was to better characterize traits that allow for the survival of the original host to infestations by this particular mite haplotype. A known major trait of resistance is the lack of mit

Blepharitis is a common ocular disease, characterized by redness and itchy eyelid margin. Demodex ectoparasite mite infestation is an underreported cause of blepharitis in urban setting. Purpose of this study was to estimate proportion of individuals with blepharitis showing evidence of Demodex mite infestation. Overall, 20 individuals with blepharitis and collarettes showed presence of Demodex mite on light microscopy. The study emphasizes the importance of light microscopic examination of epilated eyelash for timely diagnosis of Demodex infestation.

The northern fowl mite, Ornithonyssus sylviarum, is one of the most common and damaging ectoparasites of poultry. As an obligate blood feeding mite, the northern fowl mite can cause anaemia, slower growth, and decreased egg production of parasitized birds. However, the impact of mites or other ectoparasites on hen behaviour or welfare is not well studied. Here, we use activity sensors (three-axis accelerometers) affixed to individual birds to continuously record hen movement before, during, and after infestation with mites. Movements recorded by sensors were identified to specific bird behavio

Blood samples from sarcoptic mite-infested pigs were evaluated for effects of mite infestation and cold and ambient temperatures on lymphocyte blastogenic responses and for effects of mite infestation on serum cortisol concentrations. In experiment 1, sarcoptic mite-infested and noninfested pigs were housed in cold (5 to 15 C fluctuating) and thermoneural (25 C) environmental chambers for 5 weeks. Differences were not observed (P greater than 0.10) in blastogenic responses to phytohemagglutin or pokeweed mitogen between lymphocytes from infested and noninfested pigs on postinfestation days (PI

Mites of 3 genera-Myobia, Myocoptes, and Radfordia -continue to plague laboratory mouse facilities, even with use of stringent biosecurity measures. Mites often spread before diagnosis, predominantly because of detection difficulty. Current detection methods have suboptimal sensitivity, are time-consuming, and are costly. A sensitive serodiagnostic technique would facilitate detection and ease workload. We evaluated whether total IgE increases could serve as a serodiagnostic marker to identify mite infestations. Variables affecting total IgE levels including infestation duration, sex, age, mit

Every week, for 20 weeks, the growth of naturally occurring grain storage fungi on wheat infested with the three commonest British grain storage mites, Acarus siro, Glycyphagus destructor and Tyrophagus longior, was compared with that on uninfested wheat. The number of colonies of the Aspergillus glaucus group per gram were always less on grain infested with mites than on uninfested grain. Penicillium spp. were also less numerous on grain which was infested with A. siro but did not appear to be affected by the other mites. In contrast, two fungi which are pathogenic to mites, Aspergillus restr

This study focuses on the parasitic associations of mites and ticks infesting reptiles and amphibians through a multifocal approach. Herein, reptiles (n= 3,596) and amphibians (n= 919) were examined to ensure representativeness of the Brazilian herpetofauna megadiversity. The overall prevalence was calculated to better understand which were the preferred hosts for each order of Acari (Trombidiformes, Mesostigmata and Ixodida), as well as to determine which orders frequently parasitize reptiles and amphibians in Brazil, and their host specificity. Infestation rates were calculated [prevalence,

Migratory birds act as important dispersal hosts for parasitic mites, facilitating their spread over long geographic distances and potentially contributing to the emergence of infestations in previously unaffected areas. This study investigates an unprecedented outbreak of mite infestation among residents of two villages in northwestern Iran, in July 2025. This outbreak coincided with the arrival and nesting of migratory rosy starlings (Sturnus roseus) within or near human dwellings. A comprehensive survey and clinical examination of the affected villagers revealed that 37.6% of residents in E

Rodents are known hosts for various ectoparasite taxa such as fleas, lice, ticks and mites. South Africa is recognized for its animal diversity, yet little is published about the parasite diversity associated with wild rodent species. By focusing on a wildlife-human/domestic animal interface, the study aims to record ectoparasite diversity and levels of infestations of the Bushveld gerbil, Gerbilliscus leucogaster, and to establish the relationship between ectoparasite infestation parameters and host- and habitat factors. Rodents (n = 127) were trapped in 2 habitat types (natural and agricultu

The current understanding of ectoparasitic mites, especially those belonging to Otopheidomenidae, has been constrained by limited data derived primarily from museum specimens. To bridge this knowledge gap, we undertook a study to investigate mite infestations on freshly captured hawkmoths (Lepidoptera: Sphingidae). From August 2016 to July 2018, we collected samples in the Chapada do Araripe area in the municipality of Santana do Cariri (7°12'33''S, 39°43'22''W, 750 m a.s.l.), Ceará, Northeast Brazil. We attracted and captured sphingids using an artificial light source and then gathered mites

Studies of sarcoptic mange and immunity are hampered by lack of mite sources and natural infestation models. We have investigated the clinical and pathological signs, specific IgG response and acquired immunity in naïve New Zealand White rabbits (Oryctolagus cuniculus) experimentally infested with Sarcoptes scabiei originally isolated from a clinically affected free-living European wild rabbit. Twenty rabbits were infested using two methods, direct contact for a 24 h period with a seeder rabbit simulating the natural process of infestation and application of a dressing holding approximately 18

Infestation by the tropical rat mite (Ornithonyssus bacoti) is presented with bizarre symptoms that made an accurate diagnosis difficult. The physical characteristics, life cycle, habits, and epidemiology of the tropical rat mite are discussed, as are the rat and other hosts, the rash produced by the mite, differential diagnosis of the dermatitis, and the treatment of the dermatitis and control of the infestation.

A remarkable case of onychomycosis by Trichophyton (T.) rubrum combined with nail infestation by Tyrophagus (T.) putrescentiae in an elderly diabetic farmer is described and discussed. Large numbers of eggs and mites in all development stages were present in nail debris, reflecting active reproduction on site. Treatment with ivermectin 0.1% cream and environmental decontamination cleared the mite infestation, while onychomycosis responded well to oral terbinafine and ciclopirox 8% nail lacquer. Such a combination of onychomycosis and mite infestation of the same nail is an exceptional finding
