Moebius syndrome and holoprosencephaly following exposure to misoprostol.

Moebius syndrome is a rare disease characterized by congenital facial paralysis and abducens palsy. Involvement of other cranial nerves, orofacial dysmorphism, and limb abnormalities are frequently associated. Reported here is the case of a 10-month-old child born with Moebius syndrome and presenting with holoprosencephaly, following exposure in utero to misoprostol. To our knowledge, this is the first published case report describing this association. The etiologic hypotheses of Moebius syndrome are also discussed.

"Moebius syndrome": a case report.

Moebius syndrome is an extremely rare disorder characterized by a lifetime facial paralysis, involving sixth and seventh cranial nerves with malformations of orofacial structures and the limbs. In this case, an 8 year old girl with Moebius syndrome is presented, clinical findings are described and management aspects are discussed. Early dental evaluation and parental counselling as a part of preventive dental regimen can go a long way in providing complete psychosocial rehabilitation for such physically disabled children.

[Poland-Möbius syndrome associated with lacrimal punctal and canalicular agenesis].

We report the case of a 21-year-old patient who presented with epiphora in the left eye and a bilateral ocular motility problem. The clinical examination revealed bilateral moderate abduction limitation (impairment of the VIth cranial nerve), facial diplegia with amimic face (impairment of the VIIth cranial nerve), punctal agenesis of the left eye, absence of the left pectoralis major muscle, left breast aplasia, and hypoplasia of the left upper limb and hand. Neither the lacrimal puncta nor the canaliculi could be found during surgical exploration of left lacrimal system using operating micro

Physiopathologic Bases of Moebius Syndrome: Combining Genetic, Vascular, and Teratogenic Theories.

Moebius syndrome (MBS) is a congenital cranial dysinnervation disorder (CCDD) characterized by a bilateral palsy of abducens and facial cranial nerves, which may coexist with other cranial nerves palsies, mostly those found in the dorsal pons and medulla oblongata. MBS is considered a "rare" disease, occurring in only 1:50,000 to 1:500,000 live births, with no gender predominance. Three independent theories have been described to define its etiology: the vascular theory, which talks about a transient blood flow disruption; the genetic theory, which takes place due to mutations related to the f

Long-term results of facial animation surgery in patients with Moebius syndrome.

Gracilis neuromuscular transplant is considered the gold standard for facial animation in Moebius syndrome patients. However, long-term evaluation of the results has not been critically examined in the international literature. Thus, it remains unknown how the transplanted flap changes with facial growth, and whether contraction (smiling) is maintained. Pediatric patients with Moebius syndrome who underwent facial animation surgery with at least 5 years of follow-up were retrospectively examined. Photographs taken at the 1-year and most recent follow-up visits were analyzed and compared using

Developmental facial paralysis: a review.

The purpose of this study is to clarify the confusing nomenclature and pathogenesis of Developmental Facial Paralysis, and how it can be differentiated from other causes of facial paralysis present at birth. Differentiating developmental from traumatic facial paralysis noted at birth is important for determining prognosis, but also for medicolegal reasons. Given the dramatic presentation of this condition, accurate and reliable guidelines are necessary in order to facilitate early diagnosis and initiate appropriate therapy, while providing support and counselling to the family. The 30 years ex

Diagnosis and treatment of speech disorders in children with Moebius syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Moebius syndrome (MS) is characterized by congenital bilateral paralysis of the facial and abducens nerves. Clinical features include feeding problems, dysarthria, dysphagia, sialorrhea, strabismus, and lack of facial expression. Patients with MS frequently present with dysphagia during infancy. Further on during childhood a severe speech disorder is a common feature. However, articulation deficits in patients with MS are scarcely reported in the related scientific literature. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to describe speech deviations, intelligibility and sialorrhea in pati

A case of Moebius syndrome presenting with congenital bilateral vocal cord paralysis.

We describe a female infant with bilateral facial paralysis and abducens palsy. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of Moebius syndrome presenting with congenital bilateral vocal cord paralysis (CBVCP). Although CBVCP can be part of a recognizable syndrome, i.e. Down syndrome, 22q deletion syndrome, Robinow's syndrome and cerebro-oculo-facio-skeletal syndrome, no reports of Moebius syndrome with CBVCP were found in the literature. CBVCP is often associated with central nervous system abnormalities. However, our patient had no detectable brain abnormalities. The etiology of M

[Möbius syndrome and an apparently life-threatening event].

Möbius syndrome is characterized by congenital facial weakness with impairment of ocular abduction. A subgroup of these patients have associated apneas because of involvement of brainstem respiratory centers located slightly lateral to the abducens nuclei. We report a 7-month old infant admitted to the pediatric intensive care unit because of an episode of cyanosis, hypotonia and unresponsiveness. The patient then became respirator dependent afterwards. On examination, facial diplegia, impairment of ocular abduction and hypotonia were evident. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed abnormal

Facial Reanimation Using Free Functional Muscle Transfer: Lessons Learnt From a Long Term Experience Comparing Innervation With Cross Facial Nerve Graft and Masseter Nerve.

BACKGROUND: Facial palsy is a complex problem and goal of reanimation is to achieve symmetric face at rest and spontaneous smile. in our study the authors performed facial reanimation in long standing cases of facial palsy (more than 1 year), gracilis muscle was used as a free functioning muscle transfer. Two motor donor nerves were used: cross-face nerve graft and masseter nerve. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 205 cases of unilateral facial reanimation with free functional muscle transfer (FFMT) were performed between 1998 and 2019. Out of 205 patients, 184 patients were operated by cross

The congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders.

Congenital cranial dysinnervation disorders (CCDD) encompass a number of related conditions and includes Duane syndrome, congenital fibrosis of the external ocular muscles, Möbius syndrome, congenital ptosis and hereditary congenital facial paresis. These are congenital disorders where the primary findings are non-progressive and are caused by developmental abnormalities of cranial nerves/nuclei with primary or secondary dysinnervation. Several CCDD genes have been found, which enhance our understanding of the mechanisms involved in brain stem development and axonal guidance.

Carey-Fineman-Ziter Syndrome: A MYMK-Related Myopathy Mimicking Brainstem Dysgenesis.

Carey-Fineman-Ziter syndrome is a congenital myopathy associated with mutations in the MYMK gene. It is clinically defined by the combination of hypotonia, Moebius-Robin sequence, facial anomalies and motor delay. Historically it was considered a brainstem dysgenesis syndrome. We provide detailed information of a Spanish boy with compound heterozygous variants in MYMK gene. A muscle biopsy performed as a toddler only disclosed minimal changes, but muscle MRI showed severe fatty infiltration of gluteus muscles and to a lesser extent in adductors magnus, sartorius and soleus muscles. Clinical co

[Congenital fibrosis of extraocular muscles (CFEOM) and other phenotypes of congenital cranial dysinnervation syndromes (CCDD)].

Currently, different syndromes with congenital, nonprogressive, sporadic, or familial developmental abnormalities of the cranial nerves and its nuclei are classified as congenital cranial dysinnervation syndromes (CCDD). One of these syndromes, congenital fibrosis of extraocular muscles (CFEOM), is characterized mainly by bilateral ophthalmoplegia of the oculomotor and trochlear nerves. Within the scope of an overview, the case of a 60-year-old patient with congenital fibrosis of extraocular muscles type 1 (CFEOM1) with autosomal dominant inheritance and typical phenotype, but additional progr
