An anatomically informed computational fluid dynamics modeling approach for quantifying hemodynamics in the developing heart.

Congenital heart defects occur in approximately 1% of newborns in the US annually. Currently, less than a third of congenital heart defects can be traced to a known genetic or environmental cause, suggesting that a large proportion of disease-causing mechanisms have yet to be fully characterized. Hemodynamic forces such as wall shear stress are critical for heart development and are known to induce changes in embryonic cardiac patterning leading to malformations. However, measuring these hemodynamic factors in vivo is infeasible due to physical limitations, such as the small size and constant

Three-dimensional anatomical analysis of the optic nerve canal with virtual model based on CBCT.

The optic nerve canal (ONC) is a fine skeletal structure that contains the optic nerve. However, it has not been thoroughly examined. This necessitates establishing a baseline knowledge of the geometrical and volumetric parameters of the ONC. The data of twenty patients who received a cone beam computed tomography examination were prepared using a voxel-based segmentation. The measurement was performed separately by two examiners on virtual skull models in stereolithography format in Geomagic Wrap®. The results showed that the volume of the ONC varied between 92.48 mm3 and 162.7 mm3 (M = 123.4

Evaluating the impact of anatomical and physiological variability on human equivalent doses using PBPK models.

Addressing human anatomical and physiological variability is a crucial component of human health risk assessment of chemicals. Experts have recommended probabilistic chemical risk assessment paradigms in which distributional adjustment factors are used to account for various sources of uncertainty and variability, including variability in the pharmacokinetic behavior of a given substance in different humans. In practice, convenient assumptions about the distribution forms of adjustment factors and human equivalent doses (HEDs) are often used. Parameters such as tissue volumes and blood flows a

Ventricular anatomical complexity and sex differences impact predictions from electrophysiological computational models.

The aim of this work was to analyze the influence of sex hormones and anatomical details (trabeculations and false tendons) on the electrophysiology of healthy human hearts. Additionally, sex- and anatomy-dependent effects of ventricular tachycardia (VT) inducibility are presented. To this end, four anatomically normal, human, biventricular geometries (two male, two female), with identifiable trabeculations, were obtained from high-resolution, ex-vivo MRI and represented by detailed and smoothed geometrical models (with and without the trabeculations). Additionally one model was augmented by a

Clinical Applications of Meshed Multilayered Anatomical Models by Low-Cost Three-Dimensional Printer.

In recent years, even low-cost fused deposition modeling-type three-dimensional printers can be used to create a three-dimensional model with few errors. The authors devised a method to create a three-dimensional multilayered anatomical model at a lower cost and more easily than with established methods, by using a meshlike structure as the surface layer. Fused deposition modeling-type three-dimensional printers were used, with opaque polylactide filament for material. Using the three-dimensional data-editing software Blender (Blender Foundation, www.blender.org) and Instant Meshes (Jakob et a

On the anatomical definition of arterial networks in blood flow simulations: comparison of detailed and simplified models.

The goal of this work is to assess the impact of vascular anatomy definition degree in the predictions of blood flow models of the arterial network. To this end, results obtained with an anatomically detailed network containing over 2000 vessels are systematically compared with those obtained with an anatomically simplified network containing the main 86 vessels, the latter being a truncated version of the former one. The comparison is performed quantitatively and qualitatively in terms of pressure and flow rate waveforms, wave intensity analysis and impedance analysis. Comparisons are perform

Micro-anatomic alterations of the placenta in a non-human primate model of gestational protein-restriction.

OBJECTIVES: Maternal protein malnutrition is associated with impaired fetal growth, and lifetime consequences for the offspring. Our group has previously developed a model of protein-restriction in the non-human primate, which was associated with fetal growth restriction, stillbirth, decreased placental perfusion, and evidence of fetal hypoxia, suggesting perturbed vascular development. Our objective was to histologically characterize the micro-anatomic alterations associated with adverse pregnancy outcomes taking an approach that permits investigation of the 3D vascular structure and surround

Anatomical masking of pressure footprints based on the Oxford Foot Model: validation and clinical relevance.

Plantar pressure analysis is widely used in the assessment of foot function. In order to assess regional loading, a mask is applied to the footprint to sub-divide it into regions of interest (ROIs). The most common masking method is based on geometric features of the footprint (GM). Footprint masking based on anatomical landmarks of the foot has been implemented more recently, and involves the integration of a 3D motion capture system, plantar pressure measurement device, and a multi-segment foot model. However, thorough validation of anatomical masking (AM) using pathological footprints has n

Generating anatomical models of the heart and the aorta from medical images for personalized physiological simulations.

The anatomy and motion of the heart and the aorta are essential for patient-specific simulations of cardiac electrophysiology, wall mechanics and hemodynamics. Within the European integrated project euHeart, algorithms have been developed that allow to efficiently generate patient-specific anatomical models from medical images from multiple imaging modalities. These models, for instance, account for myocardial deformation, cardiac wall motion, and patient-specific tissue information like myocardial scar location. Furthermore, integration of algorithms for anatomy extraction and physiological s

Modelling tendon excursions and moment arms of the finger flexors: anatomic fidelity versus function.

A detailed musculoskeletal model of the human hand is needed to investigate the pathomechanics of tendon disorders and carpal tunnel syndrome. The purpose of this study was to develop a biomechanical model with realistic flexor tendon excursions and moment arms. An existing upper extremity model served as a starting point, which included programmed movement of the index finger. Movement capabilities were added for the other fingers. Metacarpophalangeal articulations were modelled as universal joints to simulate flexion/extension and abduction/adduction while interphalangeal articulations used

Preventive ablation strategies in a biophysical model of atrial fibrillation based on realistic anatomical data.

Ablation strategies to prevent episodes of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (AF) have been subject to many clinical studies. The issues mainly concern pattern and transmurality of the lesions. This paper investigates ten different ablation strategies on a multilayered 3-D anatomical model of the atria with respect to 23 different setups of AF initiation in a biophysical computer model. There were 495 simulations carried out showing that circumferential lesions around the pulmonary veins (PVs) yield the highest success rate if at least two additional linear lesions are carried out. The findings c
