Finite element analysis of dental structures: the role of mandibular kinematics and model complexity.

INTRODUCTION: This study observed the consequences of integrating mandibular kinematics in maxillary and mandibular teeth contact in a finite element analysis (FEA), and investigate the level of simplification of the dental models in FEA. The purpose of this study was to compare the results of finite element analysis obtained from simple to more complex dental models incorporating mandibular motion during loading phase. METHODS: Six models were generated for this study. The simplest models consisted of only the crown of the tooth and an antagonist tooth with either the same properties or rigi

A statistical model of the rate-dependent fracture behavior of dental polymer-based biomaterials.

An insight into the fracture behavior of dental polymer-based biomaterials is important to reduce safety hazards for patients. The crack-driven fracture process of polymers is largely stochastic and often dependent on the loading rate. Therefore, in this study, a statistical model was developed based on three-point bending tests on dental polymethyl methacrylate at different loading rates. The fracture strains were investigated (two-parameter Weibull distribution (2PW)) and the rate-dependency of the 2PW parameters were examined (Cramér-von Mises test (CvM)), arriving at the conclusion that th

Analgesic and Neuroprotective Effects of Electroacupuncture in a Dental Pulp Injury Model-A Basic Research.

Irreversible pulpitis is an extremely painful condition and its consequence in the central nervous system (CNS) remains unclear. A mouse model of dental pulp injury (DPI) resembles the irreversible pulpitis profile in humans. This study sought to determine whether pain induced by DPI activates microglia and astrocytes in the trigeminal subnucleus caudalis (Vc), as well as increases levels of proinflammatory cytokines, and whether electroacupuncture (EA) can be a potential analgesic and neuroprotective therapy following DPI. Pain behavior was measured via head-withdrawal threshold (HWT) and bur

Dental and craniofacial defects in the Crtap-/- mouse model of osteogenesis imperfecta type VII.

BACKGROUND: Inactivating mutations in the gene for cartilage-associated protein (CRTAP) cause osteogenesis imperfecta type VII in humans, with a phenotype that can include craniofacial defects. Dental and craniofacial manifestations have not been a focus of case reports to date. We analyzed the craniofacial and dental phenotype of Crtap-/- mice by skull measurements, micro-computed tomography (micro-CT), histology, and immunohistochemistry. RESULTS: Crtap-/- mice exhibited a brachycephalic skull shape with fusion of the nasofrontal suture and facial bones, resulting in mid-face retrusion and

Effect of chronic stress on capsaicin-induced dental nociception in a model of pulpitis in rats.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic stress can alter nociceptive sensitivity. However, the effect of stress exposure on dental nociception has been less addressed. Therefore, the present study investigated the effects of chronic exposures to some social and psychological stresses on pulpal nociceptive responses. DESIGN: The stress groups were constructed as follows: forced swimming (n=6), restraint (n=6), and mild (n=10) and severe (n=15) crowding stresses. Rats were subjected to stress for 1h per day for a week. At the end of the stress session, pulp irritation was induced by intradental application of capsa

Dental pulp can be a good candidate for nerve grafting in a xeno-graft model.

Dental pulp is discarded after extirpation of dental pulp and after tooth extraction. However, it contains nerve tissue abundantly and could be used more effectively. This study was designed to examine whether a dental pulp could be a candidate of donor for nerve grafting in xenografting model. The dental pulp was obtained from a human vital extracted tooth for orthodontic treatment, and treated with freezing and thawing method for reducing antigenicity. The treated sample was inserted into chitosan mesh tube for easy suturing, and then the complex was implanted into transected sciatic nerve i

Model of age estimation based on dental factors of unknown cadavers among Iranians.

Two hundred and ten cadavers ranging in age from 25 to 60 were studied. Thirty subjects from each five-year interval were selected, and data were collected using the mandibular anterior and premolar teeth after extraction. Sections ranging from 0.5 to 1.0 mm were measured by a stereo microscope with a precision of 0.1 mm. The following factors were determined: attrition, periodontosis, root resorption, secondary dentine apposition, cementum apposition, and translucency of the root. Statistical analysis used the sum of ranks of the dental factors as an independent variable in a linear regressio

Multidimensional causal model of dental caries development in low-income preschool children.

Despite the decline in the incidence of dental caries in the United States over the past several years, the condition remains a significant problem for the nation's poor children. Efforts to identify the factors responsible for caries development in samples of children of low socioeconomic status have primarily focused on a limited number of variables, and those have been predominantly biological (mutans streptococci, for example). Resulting models of caries development have usually shown good sensitivity but poor specificity. They have had limited implications for treatment. In an effort to p

Demographic prompt cues shift clinical recommendations in multimodal large language models: a multi-model audit of 25,380 dental radiograph assessments.

BACKGROUND: Multimodal large language models (LLMs) are increasingly being evaluated for clinical image interpretation, but whether patient demographic cues influence their recommendations remains unclear in dental radiology-a leading domain for AI-assisted diagnostics, and one marked by pronounced disparities in oral health. METHODS: We conducted a within-image, between-condition audit study using 705 panoramic dental radiographs from the publicly available DENTEX dataset. Each image was submitted to three commercial multimodal LLMs (Gemini 2.5 Flash, GPT-5.4, Claude Sonnet 4.6) under 12 exp

DentoMorph-LDMs: diffusion models based on novel adaptive 8-connected gum tissue and deciduous teeth loss for dental image augmentation.

Pediatric dental image analysis faces critical challenges in disease detection due to missing or corrupted pixel regions and the unique developmental characteristics of deciduous teeth, with current Latent Diffusion Models (LDMs) failing to preserve anatomical integrity during reconstruction of pediatric oral structures. We developed two novel biologically-inspired loss functions integrated within LDMs specifically designed for pediatric dental imaging: Gum-Adaptive Pixel Imputation (GAPI) utilizing adaptive 8-connected pixel neighborhoods that mimic pediatric gum tissue adaptive behavior, and
