Antisocial personality--diagnosis or moral judgment?

Antisocial personality is a problem-filled diagnosis. Even when diagnosed according to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) II manual, it was replete with value laden terminology. DSM III makes repeated criminal behavior central and includes a list of other behaviors that do not always truly imply an antisocial personality. In order to test the possibility that factors other than those listed in the manual may often influence the diagnosis, the prevalence of required characteristics in patients diagnosed antisocial personality was compared with the prevalence of requ

Professional Identity as a Mechanism Linking Moral Sensitivity to Moral Courage Among Clinical Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

AIM: This study examined whether professional identity mediates the association between moral sensitivity and moral courage among clinical nurses. BACKGROUND: Moral courage enables nurses to advocate for patients in ethically challenging situations, yet nurse managers lack evidence-based guidance on how to cultivate this competency. While moral sensitivity is a known antecedent of moral courage, the mechanisms translating recognition into action remain unclear. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey of 1049 clinical nurses was conducted at two tertiary hospitals in Dalian, China (March 22-April 9

Acceptance and commitment therapy for moral injury: conceptualizing and intervening on moral injury through the lens of contextual behavioral science.

Moral injury is at a critical juncture in its conceptualization. Current dominant approaches to conceptualizing and assessing moral injury are rooted in syndromal frameworks with implicit medical model assumptions. In these approaches, painful moral emotions and cognitions are often conceptualized as pathological symptoms to be reduced or corrected. Such approaches risk pathologizing deeply human moral responses and may inadvertently position clinicians as arbiters of which moral appraisals or emotional reactions are appropriate, proportionate, or adaptive. In this paper, we present Contextual

Bringing Light into the Dark: Moral Injury and Exploring the Impact of Eliciting Moral Elevation on the Daily Experiences of U.S. Veterans.

Moral elevation is described as feeling inspired after witnessing someone engage in virtuous behavior, whereas moral injury is the result of internal conflict that stems from exposure to morally injurious experiences. Building on previous work that used moral elevation to benefit veterans, this study explored the relationship between eliciting elevation, daily motives, and affective experiences for veterans with moral injury-related distress. Using an ABA experimental design, veterans (final n = 22) first completed 4 daily surveys that only included brief daily measures (A), followed by 4 days

The Extreme Moral Diversity of Men Convicted of Violence Against Their Partners: Four Profiles Based on the Five Moral Foundations.

The aim of this study is to identify homogeneous profiles based on the five moral foundations in a sample of 376 men undergoing court-mandated treatment for violently abusing their partners. To understand better the meaning of these new profiles as well as their temporal consistency, the profiles were related to different outcomes of the current psychological treatments, before and after a prescribed one, such as self-deception, moral self-concept, benevolent sexism, and hostile sexism. Results from Latent Profile Analysis and Latent Transition Analysis showed good fit for a four-profile solut

From Moral Distress to Moral Resilience: How Reflective Writing-Based Ethics Education Supports Professional Identity Formation and Prevents Moral Injury Among First-Year Pharmacy Students.

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to characterize potentially morally injurious events (PMIEs) experienced by first-year pharmacy students and to examine how structured reflective writing facilitates recognition, processing, and meaning-making related to these events and supports moral resilience development. METHODS: A qualitative study was conducted with 39 first-year pharmacy students enrolled in a required ethics course at a military medical university in Taiwan. Students completed a structured four-prompt reflective writing exercise addressing ethical dilemmas, emotional responses, behavioral

Challenges of a negative work load and implications on morale, productivity and quality of service delivered in NHS laboratories in England.

The National Health Service (NHS) is a term used to describe the publicly funded healthcare delivery system providing quality healthcare services in the United Kingdom. There are several challenges militating against the effective laboratory service delivery in the NHS in England. Biomedical scientists work in healthcare to diagnose disease and evaluate the effectiveness of treatment through the analysis of body fluids and tissue samples from patients. They provide the "engine room" of modern medicine with 70% of diagnosis based on the laboratory results generated by them. This review involved

Exploring Moral Distress among Canadian Acute Care Pharmacists Using the Measure of Moral Distress for Health Care Professionals.

BACKGROUND: Moral distress (MD) negatively affects health care professionals (HCPs) and may lead to attrition if it is left unaddressed. Although MD has been well documented in many health care professions, only limited research has focused on pharmacists. OBJECTIVES: To assess MD among pharmacists providing direct patient care in acute care settings and to identify associated risk factors or contextual contributors. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey was distributed to Canadian hospital pharmacists through multiple channels. The survey (available from November 2022 to February 2023) i

Perceived moral distress and moral injury experienced by nurses during the COVID-19 pandemic: A content analysis of a national survey.

INTRODUCTION: This study explores the experiences of direct care nurses with moral distress (MD) and moral injury (MI) during the COVID-19 pandemic. OBJECTIVE: To understand how nurses experienced ethically challenging events that conflicted with their professional values and led to MD and MI. METHOD: A phenomenologic design was used to examine lived experiences of direct care nurses in acute care settings. Participants were recruited via social media and professional organizations to complete an online survey. Qualitative content analysis was used to identify themes. RESULTS: Nurses descri

Are people really less moral in their foreign language? Proficiency and comprehension matter for the moral foreign language effect in Russian speakers.

Previous work has demonstrated that people are more willing to sacrifice one person to save five in a foreign language (FL) than in their native tongue. This may be due to the FL either reducing concerns about sacrificial harm (deontological inclinations) or increasing concerns about overall outcomes (utilitarian inclinations). Moreover, proficiency in a foreign language (FL) may moderate results. To test these possibilities, we investigated the moral foreign language effect (MFLE) in a novel sample of Russian L1/English FL speakers. We employed process dissociation (PD)-a technique that indep

Association between artificial intelligence literacy and empathic behavior among nursing interns: adjustment for moral distress and moral resilience.

BACKGROUND: Artificial intelligence (AI) literacy is increasingly relevant in nursing education, yet its association with empathic behavior among nursing interns remains unclear. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 300 nursing interns from three tertiary hospitals in China (December 2025-April 2026). AI literacy and empathic behavior were assessed using validated scales. Moral distress and moral resilience were included as covariates. Multivariable linear regression and restricted cubic spline analyses were performed, with subgroup analyses to assess robustness. RESULTS: Higher AI l

Internet impropriety: Moral identity, moral disengagement, and antisocial online behavior within an early adolescent to young adult sample.

INTRODUCTION: Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) are the most popular medium for social communication amongst adolescents and young adults. However, there is growing concern surrounding heightened ICT use and the activation of influential social constructs such as moral identity and moral disengagement. The importance of moral ideals to oneself (i.e., moral identity) and the distancing of oneself from these moral ideals (i.e., moral disengagement) are often contextual and were tested for differences in online domains compared to face-to-face interactions. METHODS: Three hundred

Detransition, Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, and Moral Injury.

There are increasing reports of individuals who, after undergoing medical gender-affirming treatments (GAT) for gender incongruence/gender dysphoria, subsequently detransition and/or express regret regarding these interventions. Although detransition experiences are heterogeneous, some individuals who detransition describe substantial adverse physical consequences and psychological distress resulting from the GAT they received. The purpose of this article is to assist mental health professionals in their understanding and conceptualizing of detransition experiences within the existing Diagnost

Moral emotions in mental health: regulation and mediation.

Moral emotions-such as guilt, shame, compassion, and gratitude-play a central role in shaping psychological functioning and mental health. This mini review synthesizes recent empirical and theoretical research on the regulatory roles and mediating mechanisms of moral emotions in mental health outcomes. It is demonstrated that moral emotions activate both adaptive (e.g., cognitive reappraisal, self-compassion) and maladaptive (e.g., rumination, suppression) regulatory processes that significantly influence emotional resilience or vulnerability. Additionally, psychological flexibility, emotion r

Moral injury in healthcare workers: causes & interventions.

BACKGROUND: Moral injury (MI), characterized by psychological distress from morally transgressive events, has been predominantly studied in military personnel but has gained increased attention in healthcare workers (HCWs) since the COVID-19 pandemic. SOURCES OF DATA: In this review, we narratively synthesize literature on the causes, risks, consequences, and interventions of MI in HCWs. AREAS OF AGREEMENT: There is consensus that the COVID-19 pandemic presented HCWs with unique challenges such as fear of infection and patients dying without family, which increased the risk of MI in HCWs. A

Moral Worlds and Institutional Scripts at the End of Life.

This commentary responds to Jennifer Blumenthal-Barby and colleagues' article, "Can I Get a Witness? The Ethical Dimensions of Family Presence in Patient Suffering." The authors examine clinicians' moral distress when family members are absent from the bedside of dying patients and assess moral arguments for requiring family presence. We concur with their skepticism toward any strong obligation for family members to be physically present when continued treatment is considered burdensome or futile. We extend the authors' analysis by arguing that institutional culture shapes expectations of the

Quantifying Moral Distress Among Healthcare Leadership.

OBJECTIVE: To quantitatively compare moral distress (MD) across leadership job titles, settings, demographic characteristics, work responsibilities, and its impact on intent to leave. BACKGROUND: MD is broadly explored among direct care providers, but there is a dearth of research comparing MD among multiple levels of healthcare leadership. METHODS: This secondary quantitative analysis presents phase one findings of a mixed-methods explanatory sequential study measuring leadership's MD in a multisite healthcare system, using the 27-item Measure of Moral Distress for Healthcare Professionals.

Moral Injury in Gaza: The Impact on Healthcare Professionals.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Prolonged blockade, repeated attacks on health facilities, and extreme resource scarcity place Gaza's clinicians in situations that routinely violate core professional and personal values. We measured the prevalence, character, and functional consequences of moral injury among health-care workers who have remained in Gaza since hostilities escalated in October 2023. METHODS: A cross-sectional online survey incorporated a 6-item events subscale adapted from the Moral Injury Events Scale (MIES) and an 8-item outcomes subscale adapted from the Moral Injury Outcome Scale (MIO

Moral Distress in Resident Physicians: A Scoping Review.

Moral distress has been linked to burnout, emotional exhaustion, and intention to leave medicine. Although it has been widely studied in other health professionals, research into the experience of resident physicians, who work in unique sociocultural environments, is in the early stages. The objective of this scoping review is to identify, examine, and summarize the literature on moral distress in residents. Using the methodology described by Arksey & O'Malley, we queried five databases and screened and analyzed 2,991 articles. In the 36 included articles, authors' definitions of moral distres
