Validity of using a smartphone-based markerless motion capture system for quantitative analysis of human dynamic movements.

Quantitative motion analysis is often restricted in clinical and sports settings due to high cost and technical requirements of 3D optical systems (MoCap). This study assessed the validity of a smartphone-based markerless system (OpenCap) against MoCap across eight dynamic tasks. Participants (N = 41) performed movements including walking, running, jumping, and cutting, with simultaneous dual-system capture. Lower-extremity joint kinematic agreement was evaluated using discrete metrics (Root-Mean-Square-Error [RMSE], normalised RMSE [NRMSE], Pearson's r, and Bland-Altman analyses) and continuo

A Synchronized Dual-System Marker-based and Markerless Motion Capture Dataset for Gait and Fundamental Fitness Activities.

Human motion capture technology is of paramount importance in biomechanical analysis. Although marker-based optical motion capture systems are widely regarded as the gold standard for accurately measuring human movement kinematics, vision-based markerless systems offer greater potential in terms of usability and accessibility. However, the precision of markerless systems in complex human movements requires further validation. The primary aim of this dataset is to enable the comparative evaluation of consistency and accuracy between computer vision-based markerless motion capture systems and tr

Freely moving pupillometry and awake vestibular recordings capture acute vestibular-autonomic signatures of motion sickness in mice.

Motion sickness (MS) in rodents is commonly inferred from behavioral and autonomic readouts, but objective measures capturing ocular and vestibular involvement remain limited. Here we implemented a multimodal framework combining freely moving pupillometry, awake vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), awake ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs), and behavioral assays to characterize MS-like responses in mice. We further applied vestibular habituation training (VHT) to test whether these endpoints track adaptive recovery. Rotational stimulation induced a reproducible MS-like phenotype, i

Evaluation of the Ergomechanic Markerless Motion Capture System for Lower Body Kinematics During Standing, Squatting, and Walking.

Markerless motion capture (MMC) shows promise for examining human movement across many domains because of its nonintrusive nature and negligible per-subject setup time. However, published MMC systems typically require specific hardware. This validation study compared lower-body joint kinematics from Ergomechanic, a hardware-agnostic pose model-based MMC system, to an established marker-based motion capture (MBMC) system. Static trial data from eighteen people were used to register MMC keypoints within a widely used musculoskeletal model. The registered model was used to calculate joint kinemat

Concurrent assessment of sprint running lower-limb and trunk kinematics using marker-based and markerless motion capture.

Reliable and accurate sprint kinematics assessment is of utmost interest for both performance and prevention purposes. To guide field practice, new technologies must be tested against optical motion capture references. We compared markerless motion capture (ML)(Theia Markerless) to the reference method, marker-based motion capture (MB)(CORTEX). Three-dimension kinematic data from MB and ML systems and ground reaction force were collected simultaneously for 14 participants, at three stages of the sprint acceleration spectrum (early, middle acceleration and top speed). Sagittal plane angles for

From Wearable Sensor Networks to Markerless Motion Capture for Instrumental-Based Biomechanical Risk Assessment in Lifting Activities.

Manual material handling is one of the leading causes of work-related low-back disorders, and an accurate assessment of the biomechanical risk is essential to support prevention strategies. Despite workers' interest in wearable sensor networks for quantifying exposure metrics, these systems still present several limitations, including potential interference with natural movements and workplaces, and concerns about durability and cost-effectiveness. For these reasons, alternative motion capture methods are being explored. Among them, completely markerless (ML) technologies are being increasingl

Analyzing interpersonal coordination through motion capture and cross-correlation: An integrated approach to magnitude, temporality, and morphology.

This study presents a method for quantifying bodily coordination between two people using motion capture data recorded during unscripted, face-to-face interactions. The approach enables the examination of the magnitude, temporal dynamics, and morphological characteristics of coordination patterns across multiple dyads, while allowing participants to move and speak freely. It provides a continuous analysis of the full movement stream without requiring segmentation or predefined coding. Technically, the method relies on speed signals derived from position or acceleration data, which are well sui

Comparison of deep learning-based three-dimensional human pose estimation methods with motion capture for gesture research.

Humans often make gestures while speaking. These gestures have been extensively researched in psychology and cognitive science, revealing their functions and roles in communication. Despite being produced in three-dimensional (3D) space, gestures and gesture space have primarily been measured and analyzed using two-dimensional planes. Optical motion capture (MoCap) is commonly used for 3D gesture measurement. However, MoCap is expensive, requires a large space, and the attachment of retroreflective markers can interfere with the natural generation of gestures by the speaker. Recent advances in

Associations Between Hip Mobility and Pain in Chronic Low Back Pain Using IMU and Markerless Motion Capture.

Introduction: Chronic non-specific low back pain (CNLBP) is associated with altered lumbopelvic mechanics and impaired hip mobility. This study examined whether changes in pain-provoking hip flexion are associated with changes in low back pain and assessed agreement between inertial measurement units (IMUs) and a markerless motion capture system. Methods: Thirty-six patients with CNLBP completed a longitudinal repeated-measures rehabilitation protocol consisting of approximately 13 physiotherapy sessions over a period of up to 6 weeks. Active hip flexion was assessed in the symptomatic limb (t

Mechanical work derived using markerless motion capture provides a valid indication of acute neuromuscular fatigue in tennis.

Whilst workload monitoring is key to managing performance and injury risk, effective strategies in tennis are not well-established. Mechanical work (external and internal components), measurable through markerless motion capture approaches, provides a novel way to quantify workload. To determine the suitability of this approach, this study investigated the association between mechanical work and acute neuromuscular fatigue. Fifteen tennis players completed a tennis-specific on-court fatiguing protocol interspersed with sprint tests. Peak sprint velocity (measure of acute neuromuscular fatigue)

Evaluating the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of markerless motion capture for static postural control assessment.

Markerless motion capture presents potential as a clinically feasible biomechanical assessment tool, although its utility for postural control measurement remains largely unclear. This study assessed the concurrent validity and test-retest reliability of markerless motion capture for measuring static postural control, as well as its robustness to clinically relevant conditions. Fifty-three healthy adults performed three quiet standing tasks across two sessions, spaced ∼one week apart. Tasks were performed under two conditions: standing alone (unaccompanied), and with a person standing nearby s

Assessing single camera markerless motion capture with OpenSim inverse kinematics during upper limb activities of daily living.

This study evaluates the accuracy of single camera markerless motion capture (SCMoCap) using Microsoft's Azure Kinect, enhanced with inverse kinematics (IK) via OpenSim, for upper limb movement analysis. Twelve healthy adults performed ten upper-limb tasks, recorded simultaneously by OptiTrack (marker-based) and Azure Kinect (markerless) from frontal and sagittal views. Joint angles were calculated using two methods: (1) direct kinematics based on body coordinate frames and (2) inverse kinematics using OpenSim's IK tool with anatomical keypoints. Accuracy was evaluated using root mean square e

Detecting inter-adjustment coupling changes for transtibial adjustable prosthetic sockets: A novel motion capture model feasibility study.

Prosthetic sockets provide a connection between the residual limb and prosthesis. However, this connection is non-rigid, leading to unintended prosthesis movement during functional activities. These movements can diminish socket function, cause discomfort, and damage soft tissue. Adjustable sockets allow volumetric adjustments to be made; however, their impact on this connection is unknown. This study aims to assess the feasibility of a novel motion capture model in measuring inter-adjustment level prosthetic movement changes for an adjustable socket. A single male participant with unilateral

Footstrike evaluation in male runners: A comparison of lateral and medial video views against traditional motion capture.

Footstrike evaluation is essential for understanding running biomechanics and is often performed in research and clinical settings using 2D video analysis. However, whether it is appropriate to analyse both right-left footstrike patterns from a single sagittal plane video is unclear. This study compared medial and lateral video views in assessing footstrike pattern and footstrike angle, using a motion capture system as the gold standard. We analyzed 4,800 footfalls from 20 healthy recreational runners during self-paced treadmill running, recruited through convenient sampling. Footstrike angle

Evaluating Degenerative Lumbar Disease with Markerless 3D Motion Capture: Reliability and Validity in Sit-to-Stand Test.

BACKGROUND: Degenerative lumbar disease (DLD) affects older adults, causing lumbar degeneration and lower extremity dysfunction. The five-times sit-to-stand test (5xSTS) reveals kinematic changes associated with DLD. While marker-based motion capture systems detect these changes, their complexity limits clinical use. Markerless motion capture offers a portable alternative, yet its functional assessment applications in DLD remain underexplored. Thus, the aim of this study is to evaluate the reliability and validity of markerless motion capture for assessing functional tests in DLD patients. ME
