High-spatial-resolution light field 3D perception based on unidirectional object motion.

Light field cameras can capture comprehensive light information within a scene. Their core architecture incorporates a micro-lens array (MLA) positioned in front of the imaging sensor, mimicking the compound eye structure of insects. By processing the acquired data, these cameras enable the reconstruction of 3D spatial information. Despite their numerous advantages, light field cameras suffer from a critical drawback: low spatial resolution. To address this limitation, this study proposes a high-spatial-resolution light field imaging approach based on unidirectional object motion (UOMLF). A no

Measuring Human Perception of Airflow for Natural Motion Simulation in Virtual Reality.

Airflow is recognized as an effective method for inducing the illusion of self-motion (vection) and reducing motion sickness in virtual reality. However, the quantitative relationship between virtual motion and the airflow perceived as consistent with it has not been fully explored. To address this gap, this study conducted three experiments. In Experiment 1, we carried out a series of cross-modal matching tasks to establish the relationship between the speed of virtual motion and the airflow speed perceived as consistent with it, revealing a strong linear correlation. In Experiment 2, we intr

Neural processing of bottom-up perception of biological motion under attentional load.

Considering its importance for one's survival and social significance, biological motion (BM) perception is assumed to occur automatically. Previous behavioral results showed that task-irrelevant BM in the periphery interfered with task performance at the fovea. Under selective attention, BM perception is supported by a network of regions including the occipito-temporal (OTC), parietal, and premotor cortices. Retinotopy studies that use BM stimulus showed distinct maps for its processing under and away from selective attention. Based on these findings, we investigated how bottom-up perception

Individual magnitudes of neural variability quenching are associated with motion perception abilities.

Remarkable trial-by-trial variability is apparent in cortical responses to repeating stimulus presentations. This neural variability across trials is relatively high before stimulus presentation and then reduced (i.e., quenched) ∼0.2 s after stimulus presentation. Individual subjects exhibit different magnitudes of variability quenching, and previous work from our lab has revealed that individuals with larger variability quenching exhibit lower (i.e., better) perceptual thresholds in a contrast discrimination task. Here, we examined whether similar findings were also apparent in a motion detec

Beyond sensory conflict: The role of beliefs and perception in motion sickness.

Illusory self-motion often provokes motion sickness, which is commonly explained in terms of an inter-sensory conflict that is not in accordance with previous experience. Here we address the influence of cognition in motion sickness and show that such a conflict is not provocative when the observer believes that the motion illusion is indeed actually occurring. Illusory self-motion and motion sickness were elicited in healthy human participants who were seated on a stationary rotary chair inside a rotating optokinetic drum. Participants knew that both chair and drum could rotate but were unawa

Self-motion perception is sensitized in vestibular migraine: pathophysiologic and clinical implications.

Vestibular migraine (VM) is the most common cause of spontaneous vertigo but remains poorly understood. We investigated the hypothesis that central vestibular pathways are sensitized in VM by measuring self-motion perceptual thresholds in patients and control subjects and by characterizing the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and vestibular and headache symptom severity. VM patients were abnormally sensitive to roll tilt, which co-modulates semicircular canal and otolith organ activity, but not to motions that activate the canals or otolith organs in isolation, implying sensitization of canal-oto

Mapping visuospatial and self-motion perception functions in the left parietal lobe.

Parietal lobe functions include somesthesia, language, calculation, self-motion perception, and visuospatial awareness. In this video, the authors show the intraoperative mapping of a left parietal lobe for a low-grade glioma resection. Standard sensory and language mapping were performed. Interestingly, by using the "Line Bisection" task, subcortical stimulation of the gyrus angularis was repeatedly associated with ipsilateral spatial neglect, often described in the right parietal lobe. In a similar way, subcortical stimulation in a more posterior point elicited episodes of vertigo, probably

Comparison of linear motion perception thresholds in vestibular migraine and Menière's disease.

Linear motion perceptual thresholds (PTs) were compared between patients with Menière's disease (MD) and vestibular migraine (VM). Twenty patients with VM, 27 patients with MD and 34 healthy controls (HC) were examined. PTs for linear motion along the inter-aural (IA), naso-occipital axes (NO), and head-vertical (HV) axis were measured using a multi-axis motion platform. Ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (o/c VEMP) were performed and the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) administered. In order to discriminate between VM and MD, we also evaluated the diagnostic accuracy

Recovery of biological motion perception and network plasticity after cerebellar tumor removal.

Visual perception of body motion is vital for everyday activities such as social interaction, motor learning or car driving. Tumors to the left lateral cerebellum impair visual perception of body motion. However, compensatory potential after cerebellar damage and underlying neural mechanisms remain unknown. In the present study, visual sensitivity to point-light body motion was psychophysically assessed in patient SL with dysplastic gangliocytoma (Lhermitte-Duclos disease) to the left cerebellum before and after neurosurgery, and in a group of healthy matched controls. Brain activity during pr

Eye movements and motion perception during off-vertical axis rotation after spaceflight.

Constant velocity off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) provides dynamic linear acceleration stimuli that can be used to assess otolith function. Eight astronauts were rotated in darkness about their longitudinal axis 20° off vertical at low (0.125 Hz) and high (0.5 Hz) frequencies and their responses were compared before and after spaceflight. Eye movements were recorded using infrared videography and perceived motion was evaluated using a joystick with four degrees of freedom - pitch and roll tilt, front-back and lateral translation. Low-frequency OVAR generates tilt otolith-induced responses -

Ongoing activity fluctuations in hMT+ bias the perception of coherent visual motion.

We have recently shown that intrinsic fluctuations of ongoing activity during baseline have an impact on perceptual decisions reported for an ambiguous visual stimulus (Hesselmann et al., 2008). To test whether this result generalizes from the visual object domain to other perceptual and neural systems, the current study investigated the effect of ongoing signal fluctuations in motion-sensitive brain regions on the perception of coherent visual motion. We determined motion coherence thresholds individually for each subject using a dynamic random dot display. During functional magnetic resonanc

Integrative cortical dysfunction and pervasive motion perception deficit in fragile X syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is associated with neurologic deficits recently attributed to the magnocellular pathway of the lateral geniculate nucleus. OBJECTIVE: To test the hypotheses that FXS individuals 1) have a pervasive visual motion perception impairment affecting neocortical circuits in the parietal lobe and 2) have deficits in integrative neocortical mechanisms necessary for perception of complex stimuli. METHODS: Psychophysical tests of visual motion and form perception defined by either first-order (luminance) or second-order (texture) attributes were used to probe early

Controlling visually induced self-motion perception: effect of overlapping dynamic visual noise.

The effect of overlapping dynamic visual noise on visually induced self-motion perception (vection) by upward or downward optical flow was tested. The dynamic visual noise consisted of rapidly refreshed sparse random dots. Binocular disparity of the overlapping noise plane was varied. The results showed that when the noise was presented on the flow plane or on a plane farther than the flow plane, vection was totally impaired. This demonstrates that dynamic visual noise is functionally equivalent to static patterns in the vection suppression effect. A possibility of dynamic visual noise as a ve

Bilateral vestibular failure impairs visual motion perception even with the head still.

Visual motion perception of a single object, moving with a constant angular velocity of 40 min of arc/s in four orthogonal directions, was measured in eight patients with chronic bilateral vestibular failure (BVF) with the head stationary. Perception of object motion was more severely impaired for horizontal than for vertical directions and the impairment was more pronounced in the dominant eye than the nondominant eye. Impaired motion perception in patients with BVF is best explained by a central visual mechanism that suppresses oscillopsia due to the involuntary retinal slip caused by the de

Lightness perception in augmented reality: Effects of context, background, motion, and disparity.

Lightness constancy-the ability to form a stable percept of surface reflectance despite changes in illumination and context-is critical for the accurate interpretation of visual scenes, including virtual content in optical see-through augmented reality (OST-AR). However, the additive blending of virtual and real-world scenes in AR elevates the luminance of stimuli, which can make it difficult to create a convincing visual impression of low-reflectance surfaces. Here we investigated how a range of visual cues affects lightness perception in OST-AR, with the goal of identifying viewing condition

Bio-Inspired Motion-Contour-Guided Visual System for Contrast-Independent Looming Perception.

Insects can achieve rapid and precise collision detection despite having limited neural resources. This efficiency provides a vital reference for the development of artificial collision detection systems. Existing bio-inspired models typically include LGMD-based and correlation-based methods. Methods in the former category suffer from a non-linear dependency of warning time on the object's contrast against the background due to the strong reliance on inter-frame intensity differences. While the latter effectively describe motion perception by leveraging local motion information derived from a

Disruption of self-motion perception without vestibular reflex alteration in ménière's disease.

BACKGROUND: Self-motion misperception has been observed in vestibular patients during asymmetric body oscillations. This misperception is correlated with the patient's vestibular discomfort. OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether or not self-motion misperception persists in post-ictal patients with Ménière's disease (MD). METHODS: Twenty-eight MD patients were investigated while in the post-ictal interval. Self-motion perception was studied by examining the displacement of a memorized visual target after sequences of opposite directed fast-slow asymmetric whole body rotations in the dark. The dif

Does visuospatial motion perception correlate with coexisting movement disorders in Parkinson's disease?

Postural instability and balance impairment are common in Parkinson's disease (PD). Multiple factors, such as increased tone, bradykinesia, freezing of gait, posture, axial stiffness, and involuntary appendicular movements, can affect balance. The recent studies found that PD patients have abnormal perception of self-motion in vestibular domain. We asked whether measures of balance function, such as perception of one's motion, correlate with specific movement disorders seen in PD. Moving retinal image or self-motion in space triggers the perception of self-motion. We measured one's linear moti

Causal inference accounts for heading perception in the presence of object motion.

The brain infers our spatial orientation and properties of the world from ambiguous and noisy sensory cues. Judging self-motion (heading) in the presence of independently moving objects poses a challenging inference problem because the image motion of an object could be attributed to movement of the object, self-motion, or some combination of the two. We test whether perception of heading and object motion follows predictions of a normative causal inference framework. In a dual-report task, subjects indicated whether an object appeared stationary or moving in the virtual world, while simultane
