A client with hypochondroplasia dwarfism and a medical diagnosis of spinal stenosis had found that her ability to walk had decreased over the past 7 years from easily walking 6 miles (10 K) to now needing to rest every half block (171 ft/52 m) due to muscle fatigue. Such weakness is consistent with nerve impingement due to spinal stenosis, which would not be improved by massage. However, during a preliminary assessment, it was found that both lower legs had severe fascial adhesions, possibly compressing lower leg blood vessels and nerves. It was hoped that by using myofascial massage technique

Twenty-four unicondylar fractures of the distal femur were treated at the Trauma Center "Bergmannsheil," University of Bochum, Germany, between 1981 and 1990. All patients sustained their injuries from severe direct trauma. There were 16 lateral condylar fractures, five medial condylar fractures, and three tangential posterior ("Hoffa-type") fractures. Twenty-three closed injuries and one grade IIIB open fracture are included. Nine patients (37.5%) sustained concomitant injuries to the skeleton. All fractures were treated with open reduction and internal fixation with screws within 8 h of admi

BACKGROUND: This retrospective study reported on the treatment of extension contracture of the knee after surgical treatment of patellar fractures.
METHODS: Twenty-eight patients who sustained extension contractures of the knee after surgical treatment of patellar fractures 8-14 months previously (mean, 12 months) were treated. A midline longitudinal approach was made. After implants were removed, adhesions between the vastus intermedius and the femur, and in the patellofemoral joint were released completely. The knee was flexed up to 110 degrees. Postoperatively, a continuous passive motion

An intelligent stretching device was developed to treat the spastic/contractured ankle of neurologically impaired patients. The device stretched the ankle safely throughout the range of motion (ROM) to extreme dorsiflexion and plantarflexion until a specified peak resistance torque was reached with the stretching velocity controlled based on the resistance torque. The ankle was held at the extreme position for a period of time to let stress relaxation occur before it was rotated back to the other extreme position. Stretching was slow at the joint extreme positions, making it possible to reach

INTRODUCTION: The first weeks after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) are crucial for the functional outcome. To improve knee mobility, a continuous passive motion (CPM) motor rail is commonly used during in-hospital rehabilitation. The single-joint hybrid assistive limb (HAL-SJ) is a new therapy device. The aim of the study was to improve patients' range of motion (ROM), mobility, and satisfaction using the active-assistive support of the HAL-SJ.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between 09/2017 and 10/2020, 34 patients, who underwent TKA and matched the inclusion criteria, were randomized into study (HAL-

Osteochondromas are one of the most common benign bone tumors. They usually arise from the metaphyses of long bones. Involvement of the bicipital tuberosity is rare. To date, no reports have described avulsed rupture of the distal biceps tendon caused by an osteochondroma of the bicipital tuberosity. This article presents a case of avulsion of the distal biceps tendon secondary to sessile osteochondroma of the bicipital tuberosity in a 65-year-old right-handed sedentary worker who presented with insidious pain and limited motion in his left elbow for 2 months. Intraoperative findings showed a

OBJECTIVE: To examine whether cerebral activity during passive movements decreases with time after stroke, and if reduced activity in the representation for the upper extremity can be reversed with training.
METHODS: Brain activity was measured by functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) during passive wrist flexion-extension in 7 patients at varying time points after stroke, in a cross-sectional design. Upper limb function was also measured in all patients. Five of the patients took part in a training program and were measured again, behaviorally and with fMRI posttraining. Healthy contr

Repetitive passive movements are part of most rehabilitation procedures, especially in patients with stroke and motor deficit. However, little is known about the consequences of repeated proprioceptive stimulations on the intracerebral sensorimotor network in humans. Twelve healthy subjects were enrolled, and all underwent two functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) sessions separated by a 1-month interval. Passive daily movement training was performed in six subjects during the time between the two fMRI sessions. The other six subjects had no training and were considered as the control g

The results of 57 A-O type A or C supracondylar femur fractures treated by open reduction and internal fixation using indirect reduction techniques are reported. No bone grafting or dual plating was used. All patients were placed in a continuous passive motion (CPM) machine postoperatively. Patients were followed at 4-week intervals until fracture healing had occurred. All patients were followed for at least 1 year after injury. All fractures were treated by a single surgeon. The average time for fracture healing was 10.7 weeks (range 8-16). Hardware failure did not occur in this series. Outco

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: With the growing incidence of upper arm fractures among older people, innovative treatment strategies will be needed in geriatric rehabilitation. A pilot study was designed to test the feasibility of robotic-assisted rehabilitation after proximal humeral fractures.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Within a sample of 8 older patients (79.5 ± 6.12 years), functional ability, quality and range of movement, self-rated impairment, quality of life, and user satisfaction were measured in an observational pre-/postdesign. During rehabilitation robotic-assisted training was applied.

According to the literature approximately 5% of all elbow injuries result in elbow stiffness. Following pathomorphological aspects elbow stiffness can be classified into intrinsic (intra-articular) and extrinsic (extra-articular) types. Mixed forms are common. Patient evaluation should include age, degree of stiffness, predisposition and anamnesis of professional and leisure time. Basic diagnostics for planning surgical treatment routinely include clinical evaluation, x-rays and computed tomography. Before indications for open arthrolysis of the elbow are given conservative treatment of more t

The cartilage response to injury differs from the classic wound healing because of two important features of the cartilage structure; lack of vascular system and rich matrix preventing chondrocyte from migration to the injury site. Three distinct types of cartilage injuries can be identified based on the depth of injury and the repair response: microdamage, chondral injury, and osteochondral injury. There have been numerous attempts to repair cartilage injury, however their results have reinforced that articular cartilage has limited potential to repair itself. However, current research is hel
