Improving aerobics engagement and motivation with immersive virtual reality.

When searching for innovative means of fostering enthusiasm for sports and physical activity, the world has been increasingly diverting its gaze toward virtual reality (VR). This study aims to examine the impact of the VR instructional approach on students' Aerobics engagement and motivation levels. The study involved 112 students from Qingdao Huanghai University, divided into two groups of equal sizes: 56 students assigned to using the VR app, and 56 students exposed to the traditional teaching method. The results show that the VR-based intervention had significant positive effects on both th

Evaluating the Neural Underpinnings of Motivation for Walking Exercise.

OBJECTIVE: Motivation is critically important for rehabilitation, exercise, and motor performance, but its neural basis is poorly understood. Recent correlational research suggests that the dorsomedial prefrontal cortex (dmPFC) may be involved in motivation for walking activity and/or descending motor output. This study experimentally evaluated brain activity changes in periods of additional motivation during walking exercise and tested how these brain activity changes relate to self-reported exercise motivation and walking speed. METHODS: Adults without disability (N = 26; 65% women; 25 [sta

Psychological Dimensions Relevant to Motivation and Pleasure in Schizophrenia.

Motivation and pleasure deficits are common in schizophrenia, strongly linked with poorer functioning, and may reflect underlying alterations in brain functions governing reward processing and goal pursuit. While there is extensive research examining cognitive and reward mechanisms related to these deficits in schizophrenia, less attention has been paid to psychological characteristics that contribute to resilience against, or risk for, motivation and pleasure impairment. For example, psychological tendencies involving positive future expectancies (e.g., optimism) and effective affect manageme

Distraction from pain depends on task demands and motivation.

INTRODUCTION: Pain captures attention automatically, yet we can inhibit pain when we are motivated to perform other tasks. Previous studies show that engaging in a cognitively demanding task reduces pain compared with a task that is minimally demanding, yet the effects of motivation on this pain-reducing effect remain largely unexplored. OBJECTIVES: In this study, we hypothesized that motivating people to engage in a task with high demands would lead to more cognitive resources directed toward the task, thereby amplifying its pain-reducing effects. METHODS: On different trials, participants

Investigating air travellers' travel motivation during a pandemic crisis.

The growth of the air transport industry has been accompanied by various crises including aircraft incidents and accidents, terrorist attacks, and pandemics such as COVID-19. These crises to a great extent affect air travelers' motivation, which in turn affects the air travel demand that justifies airlines' legitimate existence and sustainability. However, there has been relatively little research into understanding air travelers' motivation during and after such crises, despite some studies having been conducted in the tourism domain to understand the motivation of tourists to travel to speci

Patient Goals and Motivation for Thumb Carpometacarpal Osteoarthritis Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Knowledge is lacking on patient goals and motivation for carpometacarpal joint osteoarthritis (CMCJ OA) surgery. The objective of this study was to explore patient goals and motivation for surgery, whether patient goals were reflected in self-reports of pain and function, and factors characterizing patients highly motivated for surgery. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 180 patients referred from their general practitioner for CMCJ surgical consultation. Goals for surgery were collected with an open-ended question, categorized with the International Classification of Fu

Work motivation in patients with bipolar disorder: Associated factors.

BACKGROUND: Occupational functioning is severely impaired in patients with bipolar disorder (BD). Work motivation (WM), defined as the psychological processes that determine the direction, intensity, and persistence of action within the work, is an essential component of work-related functioning. AIM: To assess whether WM is affected in patients with BD and which clinical and sociodemographic factors are related to low WM. METHODS: In all, 95 euthymic BD patients were invited to answer the Motivation for Work Questionnaire and the Rating Scale on Subjective Cognitive Deficits in Bipolar Diso

Using Virtual Reality to Increase Motivation in Poststroke Rehabilitation.

Virtual reality (VR) applications meet fundamental principles of rehabilitation: intensity, task oriented training, biofeedback, environments rich in stimuli, and motivation, all pivotal factors for the success of rehabilitation programs. This paper describes the development process of a set of VR minigames developed to increase the motivation of stroke patients while performing repetitive upper limb movements.

Genetic testing for Lynch syndrome: family communication and motivation.

Current genetic counselling practice for Lynch syndrome (LS) relies on diagnosed index patients to inform their biological family about LS, referred to as the family-mediated approach. The objective of this study was to evaluate this approach and to identify factors influencing the uptake of genetic testing for LS. In 59 mutation carriers, 70 non carriers and 16 non-tested relatives socio-demographic characteristics, family communication regarding LS, experiences and attitudes towards the family-mediated approach and motivations for genetic testing, were assessed. The majority of all responden

Hormonal predictors of sexual motivation in natural menstrual cycles.

Little is known regarding which hormonal signals may best predict within- and between-women variance in sexual motivation among naturally cycling women. To address this, we collected daily saliva samples across 1-2 menstrual cycles from a sample of young women; assayed samples for estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone; and also collected daily diary reports of women's sexual behavior and subjective sexual desire. With respect to within-cycle, day-to-day fluctuations in subjective desire, we found evidence for positive effects of estradiol and negative effects of progesterone. Desire exhibi

Attention, motivation, and reading coherence failure: a neuropsychological perspective.

Reading coherence, defined as the ability to create appropriate, meaningful connections between the elements within a specific text itself and between elements within a text and the reader's prior knowledge, is one of the key processes involved in reading comprehension. This article describes reading coherence within the context of a neuropsychological model combining recent research in motivation, attention, and working memory. Specifically, a unique neuropsychologically identifiable form of reading coherence failure arising from the attentional and motivational deficiencies, based in altered

Analysis of the motivation for hematopoietic stem cell donation.

The Italian Bone Marrow Donor Register is the institutional organization for management of unrelated hematopoietic stem cell donors. The law requires only a donor's clinical history, but not a psychosocial profile for registration. We have studied the donor's motivation for enlistment on the donor registry and the medical staff's need for this information to interact correctly with the donor. For this purpose we distributed a questionnaire to new donors at the 20 centers in the Lombardy Region over a period of 1 year. The analysis of the responses revealed a prevalence of extrinsic motivations

Testosterone and unconscious positive priming increase human motivation separately.

Clinical observations suggest that testosterone generates unconscious broad-spectrum motivations to act. It has also been suggested that subliminal positive-priming techniques also unconsciously enhances motivation for action. This placebo-controlled study examined the separate and possible joint contributions of these assumed unconscious sources of human motivation. Healthy females were administered 0.5 mg sublingual testosterone or placebo. Next, they were subliminally primed with action concepts that were paired with positive or neutral cues, and indicated their motivation for the respectiv

Clandestine abortion in Port Harcourt: users' profile and motivation.

BACKGROUND: Most of the information on abortion in Nigeria are based on information from women hospitalized for abortion complications. However a lot of abortions, especially those carried out by medical doctors do not cause enough complications to register in hospital statistics. This study is to explore the profile of women that obtain these relatively safe abortions, and to ascertain their reasons for opting for an abortion. METHODS: A cross sectional study was carried out in five clinics located in various parts of Port Harcourt, Nigeria, known to provide abortion services. Data on all th

Does contingency management affect motivation to change substance use?

Although substantial evidence favors the efficacy of contingency management (CM) for substance use disorders, few studies have examined the effect of CM on one's motivation to change substance use. One way of conceptualizing motivation to change is by using the stages of change model [Prochaska, J.O., DiClemente, C.C., 1983. Stages and processes of self-change of smoking: toward an integrative model of change. J. Consult. Clin. Psychol. 51, 390-395]. We assessed motivation to change substance use as conceptualized by the stages of change model using the University of Rhode Island Change Assess

Differences in problems of motivation in different special groups.

In general, children with a range of special needs have below-average motivation and perceived control. We have investigated whether differences exist between the types of problem in different special groups. Theory distinguishes between two types: low motivation and perceived control can be based either on a low perceived contingency, or on a low perceived competence. These two types of problem require different intervention strategies. The development of these types is related to several factors that might vary systematically in different special groups: specific histories of experience of s

Enhancing motivation for change in treatment-resistant eating disorders.

Denial and resistance to change are prominent features in most patients with anorexia nervosa. The egosyntonic quality of symptoms can contribute to inaccuracy in self-report, avoidance of treatment, difficulties in establishing a therapeutic relationship, and high rates of attrition and relapse. Individuals with bulimia nervosa are typically more motivated to recover, but often ambivalent about forfeiting the ideal of slenderness and the protective functions of binge-purge behavior. Few attempts have been made to assess denial and resistance in the eating disorders, or to examine alternative

Relationships between motivation and depression in chronic marijuana users.

The "amotivational syndrome" which has been associated with marijuana use has not been examined systematically in relation to marijuana use and mental health. Light and heavy users were solicited by personal contact. They were asked to complete anonymous questionnaires which measured marijuana, alcohol and cocaine use, perceived states during marijuana intoxication, depressive symptoms in the last year, the Orientation to Life Scale and a modified form of the Thematic Apperception Test, from which Need for Achievement, Affiliation and Power were assessed. Several group comparisons were made: C
