Factors Influencing the Outcome, Mechanism, and Implementation of Motivational Interviewing After Hip Fracture: A Qualitative Analysis.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Motivational interviewing, an evidence-based person-centered counseling style, may help to facilitate increased mobility and physical activity after hip fracture. We explored contextual factors influencing the outcome, mechanism, and implementation of motivational interviewing after hip fracture. METHODS: A qualitative study was completed using an interpretive description framework. Data sources included verbatim transcriptions of interviews with purposively sampled patients (n = 18), clinicians (n = 6 including 3 physical therapists), and relevant physical therapy sta

Motivational interviewing to improve self-management in youth with type 1 diabetes: A randomized clinical trial.

PURPOSE: Effective interventions are needed to help adolescents with T1D develop independent self-management skills to prevent commonly observed deterioration of disease self-management resulting in poor health outcomes. Using a prospective RCT design, we assessed the impact of a nurse-led education program based on motivational interviewing (MI) in youth with Type 1 diabetes (T1D). DESIGN AND METHODS: After parental consent and youth assent, we prospectively randomized 66 adolescents 13-18 years old with T1D to either usual care (every 3 months visit with pediatric endocrinologist) or usual

Does Motivational Interviewing Improve the Weight Management Process in Adolescents? A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Due to the complex nature and high heterogeneity of motivational interviewing (MI) trials, available data on the effectiveness of these interventions on weight management in the early years of life is not yet conclusive. This study aimed to (1) evaluate the effectiveness of MI-based interventions on modifying obesity-related behaviors and consequently controlling weight in adolescents, and (2) determine characteristics of participants and interventions through sub-group analysis. METHODS: Electronic databases, i.e., Medline, Elsevier, ISI, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled T

Training Young Adult Peers in a Mobile Motivational Interviewing-Based Mentoring Approach to Upstream HIV Prevention.

Mentoring relationships are characterized by a sustained, high quality, and skill-building relationship between a protégé and mentor (Handbook of Youth Mentoring, Los Angeles, SAGE, 2014). Within prevention science, youth mentoring programs emphasize creating a specific context that benefits a young person. Program-sponsored relationships between youth and adults allow for creating a mentor-mentee partnership, but do not require the establishment of a strong bond in order to deliver prevention-focused activities and experiences (Handbook of Youth Mentoring, Los Angeles, SAGE, 2014). Effects on substance use outcomes in adolescents receiving motivational interviewing for smoking cessation during psychiatric hospitalization.

The purpose of this study was to compare substance involvement among psychiatrically hospitalized adolescent smokers who had received motivational interviewing (MI) versus brief advice (BA) for smoking cessation. One hundred and ninety-one (191) adolescent smokers (62.3% female; 15.4 years of age) were randomly assigned to MI (n=116) or BA (n=75). All patients were assessed at baseline, immediately after hospitalization, and at 1-, 3-, 6-, 9-, and 12-month follow-ups. Rates of substance use in the MI condition during follow-up increased from a low of 8.2% (SD=18.5) to a high of 15.4% (SD=30.0)

Motivational interviewing increases physical activity for adults with low back pain: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is the leading cause of disability globally and contributes substantially to healthcare costs and lost productivity. Physical activity (PA) is recommended for managing LBP, nevertheless, many individuals with LBP remain insufficiently physically active, and strategies to support behavior change are needed. Motivational interviewing (MI) may support behavior change by enhancing intrinsic motivation and self-efficacy. PURPOSE: To synthesize evidence on the effects of MI interventions targeting PA behavior in adults with LBP. METHODS: Six databases (MEDLINE, Emba

Evaluating a motivational interviewing-based communication program for nurses in advance care planning: a quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Nurses play a key role in advance care planning; however, communication skills and confidence gaps often limit their engagement. Motivational interviewing, an evidence-based approach that supports patient-centered decision-making, offers promise, but its application in advance care planning training for nurses remains underexplored. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of a motivational interviewing-based advance care planning communication program in enhancing nurses' knowledge about end-of-life care, attitudes toward advance directives, communication self-efficacy, gene

Motivational interviewing and air cleaners for smokers with COPD (MOVE): a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial.

RATIONALE: Indoor particulate matter (PM) is linked to worse respiratory outcomes in adults with chronic obstructive -pulmonary disease (COPD). It is unclear if reducing indoor pollutants can improve respiratory health among current smokers. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess whether a multicomponent environmental intervention to improve home air quality (PM and secondhand smoke [SHS] exposure) improves respiratory morbidity among current smokers with COPD. METHODS: Current smokers with moderate-to-severe COPD were randomized to receive active portable high-efficiency -particulate air cle

A 6-month follow-up of imaginal desensitization plus motivational interviewing in the treatment of pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: Pathological gambling (PG), a disabling disorder experienced by approximately 1% of adults, has few empirically validated treatments. A recent study demonstrated that 6 sessions of imaginal desensitization plus motivational interviewing (IDMI) was effective in achieving abstinence for a majority of individuals with PG. This study sought to examine whether those benefits were maintained 6 months post-treatment. METHODS: Sixty-eight individuals who met DSM-IV criteria for PG were randomly assigned to 6 sessions of IDMI or Gamblers Anonymous (GA) referral over an 8-week period. Parti

From Persuasion to Partnership: Evaluating the Practicalities, Ethics, and Evidence for Implementing Motivational Interviewing in Veterinary Practice.

Veterinary medicine fundamentally revolves around working with people to positively influence how they care for their animals. Veterinarians have traditionally used directive advice-giving when providing clients with recommendations, which can inadvertently push clients further away from change despite good intentions by evoking resistance and leaving the underlying motivational and contextual barriers to change unaddressed. Motivational interviewing (MI), a collaborative communication approach originally developed for addiction counselling, has been widely adapted across many fields because o
