[Effect of increased motor activity on changes in posture during puberty].

The purpose of this longitudinal study was to investigate the dynamics of changes of anteroposterior curvatures and scoliosis during puberty in relation to the level of physical activity. The material consisted of 111 children. Their mean age was 11.5 years at the beginning of the study. One group (n = 53) was from a sport's class (athletics, rowing-- 2 hours training, 4-5 times a week), and the other (n = 58) from a control class. The anthropostereometric method, according to Jachowicz was used to determine the posture. Measurements were taken once a year for a period of 3 years. The analysis

Effective Motor Skill Learning Induces Inverted-U Load-Dependent Activation in Contralateral Pre-Motor and Supplementary Motor Area.

Motor learning involves complex interactions between the cognitive and sensorimotor systems, which are susceptible to different levels of task load. While the mechanism underlying load-dependent regulations in cognitive functions has been extensively investigated, their influence on downstream execution in motor skill learning remains less understood. The current study extends the understanding of whether and how learning alters the load-dependent activation pattern by a longitudinal functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) study in which 30 healthy participants (15 females) engaged in ex

3D visualization of movements can amplify motor cortex activation during subsequent motor imagery.

A repetitive movement practice by motor imagery (MI) can influence motor cortical excitability in the electroencephalogram (EEG). This study investigated if a realistic visualization in 3D of upper and lower limb movements can amplify motor related potentials during subsequent MI. We hypothesized that a richer sensory visualization might be more effective during instrumental conditioning, resulting in a more pronounced event related desynchronization (ERD) of the upper alpha band (10-12 Hz) over the sensorimotor cortices thereby potentially improving MI based brain-computer interface (BCI) pro

Recruitment of rat diaphragm motor units across motor behaviors with different levels of diaphragm activation.

Phrenic motor neurons are recruited across a range of motor behaviors to generate varying levels of diaphragm muscle (DIAm) force. We hypothesized that DIAm motor units are recruited in a fixed order across a range of motor behaviors of varying force levels, consistent with the Henneman Size Principle. Single motor unit action potentials and compound DIAm EMG activities were recorded in anesthetized, neurally intact rats across different motor behaviors, i.e., eupnea, hypoxia-hypercapnia (10% O2 and 5% CO2), deep breaths, sustained airway occlusion, and sneezing. Central drive [estimated by ro

Motor imagery supported by augmented reality activates motor brain areas similarly to physical movements.

Objective. Motor imagery (MI) is a well-established cognitive process that may enhance motor skills and recovery during motor rehabilitation. Integrating action observation (AO) and augmented reality (AR) into MI tasks is a promising approach to enhance brain modulation and improve motor learning, yet it remains under-explored. This study examines the impact of AR on brain modulation during tasks combining MI and AO, and its implications for motor learning assessed through an implicit sequence learning paradigm.Approach. 35 participants were separated into two groups: a motor execution (ME) gr

Motor Unit Action Potential Clustering-Theoretical Consideration for Muscle Activation during a Motor Task.

During dynamic or sustained isometric contractions, bursts of muscle activity appear in the electromyography (EMG) signal. Theoretically, these bursts of activity likely occur because motor units are constrained to fire temporally close to one another and thus the impulses are "clustered" with short delays to elicit bursts of muscle activity. The purpose of this study was to investigate whether a sequence comprised of "clustered" motor unit action potentials (MUAP) can explain spectral and amplitude changes of the EMG during a simulated motor task. This question would be difficult to answer ex

Motor impairments in young children with cerebral palsy: relationship to gross motor function and everyday activities.

In this study we assessed the distribution of spasticity, range of motion (ROM) deficits, and selective motor control problems in children with cerebral palsy (CP), and examined how these impairments relate to each other and to gross motor function and everyday activities. Ninety-five children (55 males, 40 females; mean age 58 months, SD 18 months, range 25 to 87 months) were evaluated with the modified Ashworth scale (MAS), passive ROM, the Selective Motor Control scale (SMC), the Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM), and the Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI). [Effects of axotomy on the activity of the motor neurons of the external ocular motor nucleus during saccadic movements].

The instantaneous firing frequency of cat abducens nucleus motoneurons (Mns) during spontaneous saccadic eye movements has been analyzed. Recordings were carried out from both control and axotomized Mns. Firing frequency of control Mns increased gradually during the first four to five interspike intervals, at which point maximum firing frequency was reached. Axotomized Mns showed an increase in firing frequency only up to the second or third interval, decreasing rapidly then. Linear relationships, with high correlation coefficients, were established between the first five intervals versus maxi

High-definition tDCS of the motor cortex affects prefrontal and primary motor activity differently in young and older adults.

The ability to suppress irrelevant or distracting inputs that interfere with goal-driven behavior is known to decline with increasing age. Although noninvasive stimulation of the motor cortices has been shown to modulate age-related changes in motor activity, the findings remain preliminary, and it is unknown whether this effect extends beyond the motor cortex. In this study, 125 healthy adults, categorized into young (20-35 years) and older groups (55-72 years) underwent three visits (i.e., anodal, cathodal, and sham). During each visit, they received 20 min of high-definition transcranial di

Cerebellar Activity Affects Distal Cortical Physiology and Synaptic Plasticity in a Human Parietal-Motor Pathway Associated with Motor Actions.

Voluntary movement control depends on plasticity in several interconnected brain regions, including the cerebellum (CB), primary motor cortex (M1), and posterior parietal cortex (PPC). It is thought that one role of the CB is to regulate communication between PPC and M1, but causal evidence for this regulatory role in humans remains lacking. Here, we evaluated how transiently altering activity in CB via intermittent theta burst stimulation (iTBS) affects PPC-M1 connectivity and plasticity by assessing the effectiveness of subsequent Hebbian-like cortical paired associative stimulation (cPAS) t

Effects of aripiprazole/OPC-14597 on motor activity, pharmacological models of psychosis, and brain activity in rats.

Aripiprazole (OPC-14597) is an antipsychotic with a unique pharmacology as a dopamine D2 receptor partial agonist, which has been demonstrated to reduce symptoms of schizophrenia. To further profile this compound in preclinical models, we examined aripiprazole-induced activity changes as measured by pharmacological magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and characterized the drug in several rodent models of motor behaviors and of psychosis. Continuous arterial spin labeling MRI measuring blood perfusion (as an indirect measure of activity) reveals that aripiprazole dose-dependently decreased brain a

Neuropeptide S increases motor activity and thermogenesis in the rat through sympathetic activation.

The central role of neuropeptide S (NPS), identified as the endogenous ligand for GPR154, now named neuropeptide S receptor (NPSR), has not yet been fully clarified. We examined the central role of NPS for body temperature, energy expenditure, locomotor activity and adrenal hormone secretion in rats. Intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of NPS increased body temperature in a dose-dependent manner. Energy consumption and locomotor activity were also significantly increased by icv injection of NPS. In addition, icv injection of NPS increased the peripheral blood concentration of adrenalin and

Decreased motor activity of hyperactive children on dextroamphetamine during active gym program.

The motor activity of 10 hyperactive boys was measured during eight 1-hour active gym classes. Children received either dextroaomphetamine (0.5 mg/kg) or placebo elixir before each class, in a double-blind design. The program for each of the classes was participation in the active sports: hockey, basketball, and/or roller skating; the "task" throughout each hour was to play vigorously and continuously. The boys' mean hourly activity following amphetamine was slightly but significantly less than that following placebo. This finding is contradictory to the hypothesis that improved attention to a

Frontal theta activation during motor synchronization in autism.

Autism is characterized by two primary characteristics: deficits in social interaction and repetitive behavioral patterns. Because interpersonal communication is extremely complicated, its underlying brain mechanisms remain unclear. Here we showed that both characteristics can be explained by a unifying underlying mechanism related to difficulties with irregularities. To address the issues, we measured electroencephalographm during a cooperative tapping task, which required participants to tap a key alternately and synchronously with constant rhythmic a PC program, a variable rhythmic PC progr

Selective activation of ipsilateral motor pathways in intact humans.

It has been proposed that ipsilateral motor pathways play a role in the control of ipsilateral movements and recovery of function after injury. However, the extent to which ipsilateral motor pathways are engaged in voluntary activity in intact humans remains largely unknown. Using transcranial magnetic stimulation over the arm representation of the primary motor cortex, we examined ipsilateral motor-evoked potentials (iMEPs) in a proximal arm muscle during increasing levels of unilateral and bilateral isometric force in a sitting position. We demonstrate that iMEP area and amplitude decreased

The effects of lung resection on physiological motor activity of the oesophagus.

OBJECTIVES: To assess the modifications of oesophageal function after major lung resection and whether these modifications are correlated with the extent of resection (pneumonectomy vs others). METHODS: In the last 5 years, 40 consecutive surgical patients with lung cancer were prospectively enrolled and divided in two groups: Group A (n = 20) patients scheduled for elective pneumonectomy and Group B (n = 20) for more limited resections (lobectomy or bilobectomy). In addition to routine evaluations, all patients underwent preoperative (within 5 days) and postoperative (6 months) oesophageal m

Walking the talk--speech activates the leg motor cortex.

Speech may have evolved from earlier modes of communication based on gestures. Consistent with such a motor theory of speech, cortical orofacial and hand motor areas are activated by both speech production and speech perception. However, the extent of speech-related activation of the motor cortex remains unclear. Therefore, we examined if reading and listening to continuous prose also activates non-brachiofacial motor representations like the leg motor cortex. We found corticospinal excitability of bilateral leg muscle representations to be enhanced by speech production and silent reading. Con

Effects of buprenorphine on motor activity of the sphincter of Oddi in man.

Buprenorphine, (Temgesic), a N-cyclopropylmethyl derivative of oripavine, is both an agonist and antagonist of morphine. Its effect on the motility of the sphincter of Oddi (SO) in humans have been investigated by endoscopic manometry (EM). Buprenorphine leads to a significant decrease in the amplitude of SO contraction waves without altering other parameters. Thus, it has no morphine-like effect on SO motility, but it does act like a partial antagonist of morphine in reducing the amplitude of SO contraction waves.
