Risk factors for crash involvement in older motorcycle riders.

A prospective cohort study was conducted to identify risk and protective factors for crash involvement in older motorcyclists. Over a 1-year study period from August 2013 to July 2014, study participants were recruited from local community centers of five cities in Taiwan. People aged ≥60 years who rode a motorcycle at least once per week were eligible and were invited to participate in the study. Among 256 older riders who completed the baseline assessment and at least one of the four follow-up assessments, 79 (33.7%) experienced a motorcycle crash over the study period. Results of the propor

The impact of helmet use on outcomes after a motorcycle crash.

BACKGROUND: Helmet use in a motorcycle collision has been shown to reduce head injury and death. Its protective effect on the cervical spine (C-spine), however, remains unclear. The objective of this study was to explore the relationship between helmet use and C-spine injuries. METHOD: Retrospective National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) study. All motorcycle collisions between 2007 and 2014 involving either a driver or passenger were included. Data collected included demographics, vital signs, Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS), Injury Severity Score (ISS) and specific injuries. The primary outcome wa

Safety riding program and motorcycle-related injuries in Thailand.

A retrospective cohort study was conducted in Thailand from 2007 to 2009 to evaluate the efficacy of a safety riding program in preventing motorcycle-related injuries. A training group of motorcyclists were certified by the Asia-Pacific Honda Safety Riding Program in either 30-h instruction (teaching skills, riding demonstration) or 15-h license (knowledge, skills, and hazard perception) courses. The control group consisted of untrained motorcyclists matched on an approximately 1:1 ratio with the training group by region and date of licensure. In total, there were 3250 subjects in the training

Helmets prevent motorcycle injuries with significant economic benefits.

OBJECTIVE: The number of registered motorcycles in the United States has been steadily increasing, as have the number of motorcycle injuries and fatalities. The Midwest has the lowest incidence of helmet use in the country. Iowa in particular has no helmet law. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study of the motorcycle crash victims treated at our level 1 trauma center between 2002 and 2008. Data from 713 motorcycle trauma victims were analyzed for correlations between helmet use and multiple outcome measures. RESULTS: The helmeted cases were similar to the unhelmeted cases

Motorcycle helmet use and legislation: a systematic review of the literature.

Although there has been a marked improvement in the safety profiles of cars and in car crash outcomes, there has been a marked worsening in outcomes of motorcycle collisions. Motorcycles account for only 2% of vehicle registrations in the United States, but motorcycle collisions account for 10% of traffic deaths. Further, motorcycle riders are 34 times more likely to die in a traffic collision than automobile drivers. Motorcycle helmet use has been suggested to be an effective way to reduce death and disability after traffic collisions, and enactment of universal helmet laws has been suggested

Motorcycle riders' perception of helmet use: complaints and dissatisfaction.

In accidents which involve two-wheeled vehicles the helmet plays a life-saving role, but very little is known about the motorcycle rider's perception of the helmet. We evaluated the relationships between having been involved in an accident and dissatisfaction with the helmet, and between the perception of motorcycle riders and the objective features of the helmet. This was a case-control study: riders of motorized two-wheelers who had been involved in accidents (accident cases) were compared against a similarly interviewed sample of riders that had not been in accidents (control cases). Motorcycle rider training for the prevention of road traffic crashes.

BACKGROUND: Riding a motorcycle (a two-wheeled vehicle that is powered by a motor and has no pedals) is associated with a high risk of fatal crashes, particularly in new riders. Motorcycle rider training has therefore been suggested as an important means of reducing the number of crashes, and the severity of injuries. OBJECTIVES: To quantify the effectiveness of pre- and post-licence motorcycle rider training on the reduction of traffic offences, traffic crash involvement, injuries and deaths of motorcycle riders. SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Injuries Group Specialised Register,

Development of a chinese motorcycle rider driving violation questionnaire.

The primary purpose of this study was to develop a self-report questionnaire to assess the driving violations of Chinese motorcycle riders and evaluate its screening accuracy between accident-involved and accident-free motorcycle riders. A Chinese Motorcycle Rider Driving Violation (CMRDV) scale, consisting of 19 items, was developed and administered to a sample of motorcycle riders (n=920). Exploratory factor analysis revealed a two-factor solution, which supported the theoretical premise that there are two types of driving violations, aggressive violations and ordinary violations, and that t

Complete decapitation of a motorcycle driver due to a roadblock chain.

An 18-year-old male driving an off-road motorcycle died from complete decapitation when his motorcycle tore a roadblock chain from its attachment. The decapitation injuries of the head and the torso corresponded perfectly, without apparent loss of tissue. The severance plane passed horizontally through the upper cervical region and C4, which sustained a comminuted fracture. The sharply delineated severance edge had a band-like abrasion. The decapitation resulted from the rotational movement of the unstrung chain, which struck and strangled the driver's neck. We were able to explain the movemen

Cortical blindness after motorcycle accident: a case report.

A 47 year-old Thai man presented with acute bilateral blindness after suffering head trauma in a motorcycle accident. No neurological deficit was found. The visual acuity was light perception with poor light projection on both eyes. Other ocular examinations were normal except ecchymosis on both lower eyelids and mild subconjunctival hemorrhage on the left eye. Emergency computerized tomography showed normal appearance of optic nerves, optic canals and multiple contusional intracerebral hemorrhages at both occipital lobes. This case demonstrated a rare condition of permanent cortical blindness

State helmet laws and motorcycle rider death rates.

Motorcycles are the most dangerous form of motorized transportation. Per vehicle miles traveled, motorcyclists are about 3 times as likely as passenger car occupants to be injured in a crash, and 16 times as likely to die. Because the majority of these deaths are caused by head injury, safety advocates have recommended mandatory use of motorcycle helmets. Others contend that state laws mandating helmet use infringe on motorcyclists' rights, and question whether such laws really reduce motorcycle deaths and injury. Scientific evidence cannot address the appropriate balance between personal free

[The strain on the rider's arms in straight-ahead motorcycle operation].

The causes of vibration hazards to motorcycle mail deliverers have been considered to be due to the vibrations from the motorcycle, strain on the rider's hands and arms, cold conditions, and duration of the operation and others, and the rider's muscle tone in handling the motorcycle rises as the stability of the motorcycle decreases. In this report, the steering angle and banking of the motorcycle, vibration on the handgrips and EMG on the rider's arms and shoulders were measured during motorcycle operation with weights placed on the front and rear carriers. The relationship between the stabil
