A Swiss mountain dog, ~3 y old, was brought to a veterinary clinic because of a progressive enlargement of the abdomen. Upon clinical examination, a large mass was detected. After surgical extraction, the mass was confirmed to be a large ovarian teratoma. The weight of the tumor was > 16% of the dog's overall body weight. The dog recovered fully after surgery. The observations from this case suggest that, although teratomas are rare, prompt and accurate diagnosis is necessary to prevent further growth of these masses and to ensure positive outcomes.

Deaths at high altitudes may arise from a range of quite disparate entities including trauma (e.g. falls), environmental factors (e.g. hypothermia and hypoxia), and pre-existing medical conditions (e.g. coronary artery disease). Unique conditions include high altitude pulmonary edema (HAPE) and high altitude cerebral edema (HACE) which may contribute to lethal mechanisms or precipitate a traumatic event. Forensic issues that may arise in these cases are logistical problems due to remote locations, sometimes with failure to find a body, delay in discovery and/or repatriation, prior local autops

INTRODUCTION: Acute mountain sickness is the most prevalent illness related to acute exposure to high altitude, secondary to the hypobaric hypoxia effects in our body. Acetazolamide has been traditionally used for its prevention and treatment, however, there is still controversy regarding the degree of usefulness of this medication as monotherapy.
METHODS: We searched in Epistemonikos, the largest database of systematic reviews in health, which is maintained by screening multiple information sources, including MEDLINE, EMBASE, Cochrane, among others. We extracted data from the systematic revi

On 30 Jan 2015, two avalanche accidents happened in the Black Forest (at the foot of the 1493 m high Feldberg and the Herzogenhorn situated next to it), in which experienced ski tourers--a 58-year-old woman and a 20-year-old man--were completely buried by snow masses. Both victims were recovered dead after nearly 2 hours under the snow. The avalanches were promoted by strong snowfalls, snowdrift by the wind and steep downwind slopes. One of the victims, the 20-year-old man, underwent a forensic autopsy. The findings suggested death by protracted asphyxiation with agonal hypothermia. A mechanic

When planning a rapid ascent to an altitude above 3000 metres, acetazolamide 250 mg daily reduces the risk of acute mountain sickness, with generally moderate adverse effects.

Soft tissue and bony injuries are well described risks of the increasingly popular sport of mountain biking. Priapism, a persisting unwanted penile erection, as a result of perineal straddle injury due to a fall astride bicycle handlebar, is rare. We present a case of a competitive mountain biker with high flow priapism after such an injury who presented late but was successfully treated by non-invasive selective arterial embolization.

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is caused by the tick-borne bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii. Symptoms range from moderate illness to severe illness, including cardiovascular compromise, coma and death. The disease is prevalent in most of the USA, especially during warmer months. The trademark presentation is fever and rash with a history of tick bite, although tick exposure is unappreciated in over a third of cases. Other signature symptoms include headache and abdominal pain. The antibiotic therapy of choice for R. rickettsii infection is doxycycline. Preventive measures for Rocky Mountain spott

BACKGROUND: Previous research suggests that low serum concentrations of the third component of complement (C3) are associated with both the susceptibility to infectious agents such as Borrelia burgdorferi and the development of glomerular disease. We hypothesized that low levels of C3 are associated with the coincident occurrence of B. burgdorferi infection and glomerulonephritis in Bernese Mountain dogs.
OBJECTIVES: The aims of this study were to evaluate the serum concentration of C3 in Bernese Mountain dogs with and without antibodies against B. burgdorferi and to compare this concentratio

BACKGROUND: In the United States, cases of human blastomycosis are largely described in defined geographic areas, with Mississippi reporting the highest prevalence of disease in the southeast region. The infection is uncommonly recognized in mountainous areas, and our previous report of blastomycosis in the southern Appalachian mountains of northeast Tennessee appeared to be an exception to the usual disease distribution.
METHODS: Our current retrospective study was undertaken to determine whether blastomycosis has persisted as an endemic fungal infection in our northeast Tennessee geographic

Rocky Mountain spotted fever is a serious, generalized infection that is spread to humans through the bite of infected ticks. It can be lethal but it is curable. The disease gets its name from the Rocky Mountain region where it was first identified in 1896. The fever is caused by the bacterium Rickettsia rickettsii and is maintained in nature in a complex life cycle involving ticks and mammals. Humans are considered to be accidental hosts and are not involved in the natural transmission cycle of this pathogen. The author examined a 47-year-old woman during a periodic recall appointment. The pa

Mountain biking is generally a much more extreme sport than road cycling. It exhibits large motions and loadings, and involves complicated interactions between the rider and the bike. A dynamic model of a mountain bike and rider is being developed that requires validation by comparing predicted and actual dynamic performance. This paper reports the first step by acquiring experimental data of a moderately extreme maneuver; a mid speed jump and landing and was undertaken as part of a senior level instrumentation class. Both biomechanics and mechanical engineering studies can benefit from this d

One hundred and twenty-seven cases of histiocytosis in Bernese mountain dogs (BMD) were evaluated to determine if the tumour is inherited. Family data ruled out autosomal recessive, autosomal dominant and sex-linked modes of inheritance. The trait was determined to be inherited with a polygenic mode of inheritance. The salient points permitting this conclusion are: pedigrees developed from independently selected propositi link up allowing the tracing of all cases through several generations; multiple cases occur in the same litter; multiple cases have been produced by given dams and sires; the

Systemic histiocytosis is a rare familial histiocytic disorder seen in the Bernese mountain dog. This article documents six confirmed cases of the disease seen at the Animal Medical Centre between June 1992 and June 1994 and describes the different presentations of the disease, response to therapy and progression. Three of the dogs are still alive; of these, two are in remission six and 18 months later and in one case the owner refused treatment. Three of the cases were euthanased for humane reasons.

In the epidemiological study among 379 adult men with permanent residence at 4300 meters (14,200 feet), we found 32.2% with migraine (mostly migraine with aura), 15.2% with tension-type headache (episodic more than chronic), and 7.2% with other headaches. The frequency of migraine increased with age from 30.1% in the 20-29 year age group to 36.8% in the 50-59 year group. Episodic tension-type headaches also showed this trend. We found an age-specific increase in the frequency of high hemoglobin (Hb > 213 milligrams), low oxygen saturation (O2 saturation < 81.5%) and high chronic mountain sickn

Between January 1988 and March 1992 nephropathies were frequently diagnosed in Bernese Mountain Dogs. During this period, 20 animals (16 females, four males), ages 2-5 years (average age at time of diagnosis = 3.3 years) presented with clinically renal insufficiency. Morphologic diagnosis of the renal lesions was identical in all cases, i.e., membranoproliferative glomerulonephritis (MPGN) with concomitant interstitial nephritis. Deposits of immunoglobulin-M (IgM) and of the third complement component were regularly demonstrated immunohistochemically in the glomeruli; deposits of immunoglobuli
