Efficacy of Mouthwashes Delivered via Dental Unit Waterlines in Reducing Aerosolized Surrogate SARS-CoV-2.

BACKGROUND Preoperative mouthwashes are recommended to reduce viral transmission during aerosol-generating procedures (AGP) in dental settings. However, their effectiveness may be compromised due to dilution by continuous water flow from dental unit waterlines (DUWL). This study evaluated the virucidal efficacy of various mouthwashes when delivered through DUWL using a novel 3D-printed dental aerosol model, with human coronavirus OC43 (hCoV-OC43) as a surrogate for SARS-CoV-2. MATERIAL AND METHODS Five mouthwashes - 0.12% chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX), 0.07% cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), 1

Propolis mouthwashes efficacy in managing gingivitis and periodontitis: a systematic review of the latest findings.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Gingivitis and periodontitis are common periodontal diseases that can significantly harm overall oral health, affecting the teeth and their supporting tissues, along with the surrounding anatomical structures, and if left untreated, leading to the total destruction of the alveolar bone and the connective tissues, tooth loss, and other more serious systemic health issues. Numerous studies have shown that propolis can help reduce gum inflammation, inhibit the growth of pathogenic bacteria, and promote tissue regeneration, but with varying degrees of success reported. Clinical evaluation of benzydamine, chlorhexidine, and placebo mouthwashes in the management of recurrent aphthous stomatitis.

Eighteen patients with minor recurrent aphthous stomatitis were given alcoholic benzydamine hydrochloride, aqueous chlorhexidine, or a benzydamine-free placebo mouthwash in random order. Each patient used each preparation for a 3-month period. Ulcer diaries were marked at the same time each week during the 9-month test period. Records were made of the number, size, sites, and pain severity of any ulcers present. Statistical analysis of the results showed no significant differences between any of the treatments tested. Stinging of the oral mucosa was the only consistent side effects noted by ni

Interindividual differences in acidogenic potential of the salivary microbiome after mouthwash exposure.

BACKGROUND: Fluoride mouthwashes are commonly used for prevention of dental caries. The most common forms of fluoride are stannous fluoride (SnF2), amine fluoride (AmF) and sodium fluoride (NaF), each with differing activities against oral bacteria. Since the microbiome has been linked to interindividual differences in responses to treatment, the phenotype of the microbiome may provide information on potential treatment responses. Flow cytometry successfully tracks microbial phenotypic heterogeneity and may prove useful for capturing interindividual treatment responses. METHODS: We compared t

Risk assessment and pharmacokinetic modeling of incidental ingestion of ethanol from mouthwash.

Mouthwashes containing ethanol for antiseptic properties have a long history of use and well-established oral hygiene benefits by significantly enhancing the control of dental biofilm and reducing gingival inflammation. Despite the substantial health benefits from ethanol-containing mouthwashes, there has been ongoing scrutiny by regulatory and health authorities of products containing ethanol resulting from the classification of consumption of alcohol-containing beverages as a potential carcinogen. Unlike alcohol-containing beverages, mouthwash products are not intended to be ingested, and th

Carcinogenic potential of sanguinarine, a phytochemical used in 'therapeutic' black salve and mouthwash.

Black salves are escharotic skin cancer therapies in clinical use since the mid 19th century. Sanguinaria canadensis, a major ingredient of black salve formulations, contains a number of bioactive phytochemicals including the alkaloid sanguinarine. Despite its prolonged history of clinical use, conflicting experimental results have prevented the carcinogenic potential of sanguinarine from being definitively determined. Sanguinarine has a molecular structure similar to known polyaromatic hydrocarbon carcinogens and is a DNA intercalator. Sanguinarine also generates oxidative and endoplasmic ret

The effect of budesonide mouthwash on oral chronic graft versus host disease.

Oral chronic graft versus host disease (cGVHD) is common and a major cause of morbidity and loss of quality of life in long term survivors. Cyclosporine with prednisone remains the first line therapy for oral manifestations of cGVHD. However, even with routine administration of systemic agents, many patients with oral manifestations of cGVHD do not have resolution of their disease and may benefit from incorporation of local therapy. Budesonide is a highly potent steroid which has minimal systemic side effects and being used for oral cGVHD. We designed a retrospective study to compare treatment
