One of the largest river systems in South Africa, the Olifants River, has experienced significant changes in water quality due to anthropogenic activities. Since 2005, there have been various "outbreaks" of the inflammatory disease pansteatitis in several vertebrate species. Large-scale pansteatitis-related mortality events have decimated the crocodile population at Lake Loskop and decreased the population at Kruger National Park. Most pansteatitis-related diagnoses within the region are conducted post-mortem by either gross pathology or histology. The application of a non-lethal approach to a

A cross-sectional study was conducted among displaced pregnant women in Mozambique to determine the prevalence and correlates of HIV infection and syphilis. Between September 1992 and February 1993, 1728 consecutive antenatal attendees of 14 rural clinics in Zambézia were interviewed, examined, and tested for HIV and syphilis antibodies. The seroprevalence of syphilis and HIV were 12.2% and 2.9%, respectively. Reported sexual abuse was frequent (8.4%) but sex for money was uncommon. A positive MHA-TP result was significantly associated with unmarried status, history of past STD, HIV infection,

This prospective nested cohort (EARTH) study evaluated drug resistance mutations and outcomes among 79 (31 with genetic results) early-treated Mozambican children living with HIV, followed for 50 months. Mortality reached 20.3%. Drug resistance mutations were detected in 58.1% of children and 50.0% of mothers; 30% of pairs shared mutations. No integrase inhibitor resistance was detected, supporting Mozambique's transition to dolutegravir-based regimens.

BACKGROUND: Neurocysticercosis (NCC) is severe and leading global cause of morbidity and mortality. The disease presents with a variety of clinical presentations from focal to diffuse neurological symptoms. Despite being an endemic country, there are no studies describing the clinico-epidemiological characteristics of NCC in Mozambique. Herein, we describe a consecutive cases series of NCC from the national reference Hospital in Maputo, capital of Mozambique.
METHODS: Consecutive cases of NCC diagnosed during a 3-year period (January/2020-December/2022) were retrieved from the institutional c

BACKGROUND: Mozambique is a high-burden tuberculosis (TB) country where TB/HIV co-infection and drug resistant TB (DR-TB) incidence is increasing. Whole genome sequencing (WGS) comprehensively describes the molecular epidemiology of TB, allows prediction of DR-TB phenotypes, lineages strains identification and better understanding of transmission chains.
OBJECTIVE: To describe genetic diversity of DR-TB Mycobacterium tuberculosis isolated in Beira, Mozambique.
METHODS: Descriptive cross-sectional study with 35 M. tuberculosis isolates, resistant to at least one first-line drug on molecular d

The objective of this paper is to critically review and summarize available scientific and lay literature, and ongoing studies on human and porcine cysticercosis in Mozambique to identify knowledge gaps and direct immediate and long-term research efforts. Data on the spatial distribution and prevalence of the disease in human and swine populations are scarce and fragmented. Human serological studies have shown that 15-21% of apparently healthy adults were positive for cysticercosis antibodies or antigen, while in neuropsychiatric patients seroprevalence was as high as 51%. We compared the distribution patterns of individual Plasmodium species and mixed-species infections in two geographically close endemic areas, but showing environmental differences. Comparisons concerned circulating Plasmodium infections in both human and mosquito vector populations in the dry and wet seasons, at a micro-epidemiological level (households). Both areas revealed a very high overall prevalence of infection, all year-round and in all age groups. Plasmodium falciparum was the predominant species, being found in the vast majority of infected individuals regardless of the presence of

A large epidemic of spastic paraparesis in Mozambique during a drought was attributed to cyanide exposure from cassava. Active surveillance in one of the villages most affected by the epidemic detected four new cases in the first year after the epidemic, and none in the second year. In apparently healthy schoolchildren in the same village, surveillance of urinary thiocyanate concentration, an indicator of cyanide exposure, showed high peak values of 1175 and 673 mumols l-1 in succeeding years, with a gradual return to near-normal values in the third year. A marked seasonal variation in thiocya

Investigation of an epidemic of more than 1000 cases of spastic paraparesis in a drought-striken cassava staple area of Mozambique strongly suggests an association between this disease (called mantakassa), chronic cyanide intoxication, and cassava consumption. In previous reports of neurological disease with similar associations, the disease affected an older age group with usually a gradual onset, and the predominant clinical feature was an ataxic neuropathy. In mantakassa the onset was acute, and mostly women of reproductive age and children were affected. Serum thiocyanate levels in these p

Iron-deficiency anemia is the most common micronutrient deficiency and a leading cause of disability-adjusted life years among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) globally. Although multiple micronutrient supplementation (MMS) provides a broader range of micronutrients than iron-folic acid supplementation (IFAS) prior to conception, the acceptability of MMS and home-based supplementation strategies remains underexplored. We assessed the acceptability of MMS, IFAS, and a contextualized nutrition curriculum delivered via school clubs in a two-arm cluster-randomized trial across three rural s

Although Mozambique is amongst the countries that suffer the most economic losses due to tick-borne pathogens in cattle, little is known about the occurrence and genetic diversity of these agents. The present study aimed to detect, through molecular methods, the occurrence of Bartonella spp. and hemoplasmas in cattle sampled in Maputo Province, Mozambique. Between June and July 2014, DNA samples were extracted from the blood of 222 animals and subjected to real-time PCR (qPCR) targeting the 16–23S rRNA intergenic spacer region (ITS) of Bartonella sp., as well as to PCR assays for ‘Candidatus M

BACKGROUND: Blood transfusion is essential in modern medicine, but transfusion of blood may present for both the blood donor as well as the recipient risks. Strategies such as pre-interview (including clinical assessment) of donors and the subsequent testing of donated blood for infectious agents are steps taken to guarantee blood transfusion safety. The information about the reasons for deferring blood donors is not only important for improving the availability of blood, but also for actions to improve the health of the population in general. This the study aimed to assess the frequency and r

UNLABELLED: Increasing demand for poultry has spurred poultry production in low- and middle-income countries like Mozambique. Poultry may be an important source of foodborne, antimicrobial-resistant bacteria to consumers in settings with limited water, sanitation, and hygiene infrastructure. The Chicken Exposures and Enteric Pathogens in Children Exposed through Environmental Pathways (ChEEP ChEEP) study was conducted in Maputo City, Mozambique from 2019 to 2021 to quantify enteric pathogen exposures along the supply chain for commercial and local (i.e., scavenger) chicken breeds. INTRODUCTION: Leprosy and lymphatic filariasis (LF) are among the most disabling neglected tropical diseases (NTDs) that affect the citizens of Mozambique, especially in the Northern provinces. The irreversible impairments caused by these NTDs often lead to psychosocial consequences, including poor mental wellbeing, stigma and reduced social participation. Limited data on these consequences are available for Mozambique, which are urgently needed to better understand the true disease burden and support advocacy for scaling up interventions.
METHODS: A cross-sectional mixed-methods study was co

INTRODUCTION AND BACKGROUND: Early marriage and maternity represent a violation of human rights and a barrier to achieving gender equality in education. Studies conducted across various regions and countries, including Mozambique, have highlighted the negative consequences of early marriage and maternity, particularly on adolescent girls' physical, educational and mental health. Adolescent girls who marry before the age of 18 are more prone to a broad spectrum of mood, anxiety, and other psychiatric disorders. In the districts of Maganja da Costa and Morrumbala in Zambézia Province, Mozambique

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate cervical cancer screening with primary human papillomavirus (HPV) testing in Mozambique, a country with one of the highest burdens of cervical cancer globally.
METHODS: Women aged 30-49 years were prospectively enrolled and offered primary HPV testing using either self-collected or provider-collected specimens. Patients who tested positive for HPV underwent visual assessment for treatment using visual inspection with acetic acid to determine eligibility for thermal ablation. If ineligible, they were referred for excision with a loop electrosurgical excision procedure, f

OBJECTIVE: Cervical cancer (CC) is a global health issue, in Mozambique, 5300 new cases and 3800 deaths are reported each year. The WHO recommends the introduction of HPV molecular testing for CC screening, but Mozambique uses an approach based on visual inspection with acetic acid (VIA). This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of high-risk HPV (hrHPV) testing compared to actual approaches in Mozambique.
METHODS: An observational study was carried out in the DREAM center in Zimpeto, Mozambique. Women aged 30-55 were included. HPV testing was performed with the Cobas HPV test. They were th

In the past ten years, the prevalence of primary Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) drug resistance has ranged from zero to 25%, with higher and increasing rates in countries with access to antiretroviral therapy (ART), a specific case in Mozambique. World Health Organization (WHO) recommended that countries implement and routinely evaluate representative HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) research to monitor the emergency and transmission of HIV drug resistance mutations. This study aimed to describe the functioning of the system and also to identify gaps in the sensitivity, representativeness and q

BACKGROUND: Globally, nearly half of all deaths among children under the age of 5 years can be attributed to malaria, diarrhoea, and pneumonia. A significant proportion of these deaths occur in sub-Saharan Africa. Despite several programmes implemented in sub-Saharan Africa, the burden of these illnesses remains persistently high. To mobilise resources for such programmes it is necessary to evaluate their costs, costs-effectiveness, and affordability. This study aimed to estimate the provider costs of treating malaria, diarrhoea, and pneumonia among children under the age of 5 years in routine
