Mucositis involves an inflammation of the oral or gastrointestinal mucosa and is a common complication of cancer treatment. Mucositis is usually associated with high-dose chemotherapy, radiotherapy and, more recently, molecular targeted therapy. Oral mucositis refers specifically to inflammation and ulceration that occurs in the mouth. If not treated promptly, it can potentially lead to life-threatening infection requiring hospitalisation and intravenous antibiotics. This article discusses the causes and nursing management of oral mucositis, with an emphasis on self-care and optimal oral hygie

Radiation-induced oral mucositis (RIOM) is one of the most common side effects of radiotherapy in cancer patients, especially in almost all head and neck cancer patients. It presents as severe pain and ulceration. The development of RIOM is composed of five stages: initiation, primary damage response, signal amplification, ulceration, and healing. However, the key regulators involved in the RIOM pathogenesis remain largely unknown. In this study, we reveal a novel role of miR-200c, a member of the miR-200 family, in modulating RIOM pathogenesis. Using a mouse model mimicking RIOM, we found tha

BACKGROUND: Mycoplasma pneumoniae-induced rash and mucositis (MIRM) is a relatively newly recognized clinical entity that typically presents with predominant mucositis accompanied by variable cutaneous involvement 7-9 days after the onset of prodromal symptoms. There are no evidence-based guidelines for treatment, and current standards of care may include supportive therapy, antibiotics, corticosteroids, and intravenous immunoglobulin .
OBJECTIVE: This case series aims to describe the potential efficacy of cyclosporine A (CsA) in the treatment of MIRM.
METHODS: The present case series detail

BACKGROUND: Oral mucositis (OM), one of the side-effects induced by chemotherapy, has 40% incidence and the incidence rate increases to approximately 100% in combination with radiotherapy. We describe OM in ICR mice induced using 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) and 20% acetic acid.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We optimized the dose of 5-FU and 20% acetic acid and validated the efficacy of standard therapies for OM.
RESULTS: All mice developed OM after administration of 5-FU and 20% acetic acid. Application of Kenalog® reduced maximum ulcer area and the duration of spontaneous recovery in a dose-dependent ma

Mycoplasmapneumoniae is a common cause of respiratory infections. Although most cases are mild, some patients have extrapulmonary complications including mucocutaneous eruptions including Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS), toxic epidermal necrolysis (TEN) and erythemamultiforme (EM). Recently, a new entity, called M. pneumoniae-induced rash and mucositis (MIRM) was described. The authors present a clinical case difficult to classify attending to the classical classification of epidermolytic syndromes that meets the criteria proposed for the diagnosis of MIRM. The mucocutaneous disease associated

Due to a lack of proper drug carriers to deliver treatments for mucositis, many cancer patients suffer from oral mucositis caused by chemotherapy and radiotherapy. We prepared a double-layered electrospun nanofibrous sheets composed of Eudragit and chitosan to accelerate the healing rate of oral mucous ulcer. Human growth hormone (hGH) and Eudragit in a mixture of dimethylacetamide and ethanol were co-electrospun to nanofibrous sheets. The electrospun fibrous mat was subsequently layered with chitosan by a dip-coating method. Chitosan-layered sheets showed attenuated mass erosion while uncoate

Oral mucositis induced by radiotherapy for cancers of the head and neck reduce the quality of life of patients. However, effective therapeutic agents are lacking. Symptomatic treatment involves local anesthesia and analgesia. We focused on the antioxidant effects of edaravone (3-methyl-1-phenyl-2-pyrazolin-5-one; Radicut(®)). Oral mucositis was induced on the tongue tips of mice using a single dose of X-rays (20 Gy). To evaluate the protective effect of edaravone (30 and 300 mg/kg), administration was carried out 30 min before irradiation. Survival, oral mucositis score, myeloperoxidase activi

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Oral mucositis is a frequent early side effect of radio(chemo)therapy of head-and-neck malignancies. The epithelial radiation response is accompanied by inflammatory reactions; their interaction with epithelial processes remains unclear. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of pentoxifylline (PTX) on the oral mucosal radiation response in the mouse tongue model.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Irradiation comprised fractionation (5 fractions of 3 Gy/week) over 1 (days 0-4) or 2 weeks (days 0-4, 7-11), followed by graded local top-up doses (day 7/14), in or

Objective. To raise awareness of plasma cell mucositis as a rare differential diagnosis for oral mucosal ulceration and its macroscopic similarity to malignancy. Method. We report a patient who presented with oral features suggestive of malignancy. A biopsy revealed plasma cell mucositis. Results. The patient successfully had a full excision of one lesion and a spontaneous resolution of the other. Conclusion. With the increasing incidence of oral mucosal pathology, physicians should be aware of this differential diagnosis.

Oral mucositis affects more than three-fourths of patients undergoing chemotherapy and represents a significant burden to patients and caregivers. Lesions develop as a result of chemotherapeutic agents attacking the rapidly dividing cells of the gastrointestinal tract. Severity can range from mild, painless tissue changes to bleeding ulcerations that prevent oral intake and require narcotic pain relievers. Oral mucositis also leads to an increased risk of infection and can often delay further chemotherapy treatment. A number of assessment scales have been developed to better qualify the sympto

The Stevens-Johnson syndrome (SJS) classically involves a rash, conjunctivitis and mucositis. We describe the case of a young adult male with isolated mucositis and conjunctivitis . Previous rare reports of severe SJS like syndromes without a rash are confined to children, usually with mycoplasma pnemoniae infection.(1) Terminology for this syndrome includes - "Stevens-Johnson Syndrome without skin lesions", or "Atypical Stevens - Johnson Syndrome".(2) This case highlights the importance of maintaining an open mind when a "full house" of clinical features is absent. It also illustrates the use

PURPOSE: To evaluate the effect of the anti-fibrotic protein serum amyloid P (SAP) on radiation-induced oral mucositis (OM) and fibrosis in a hamster cheek-pouch model.
EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN: Hamsters received a single dose of radiation (40 Gy) to the left everted cheek pouch to induce significant OM. The protective therapeutic potential of SAP was evaluated using varying dosing regimens. The extent of OM was measured using a validated six-point scoring scheme ranging from 0 (normal tissue, no mucositis) to 5 (complete ulceration). Fibrotic remodeling was also visualized histologically and quan

PURPOSE: Oral mucositis (OM) is a frequent side effect in patients with cancer. We investigate the effect of atorvastatin (ATV), a cholesterol-lowering drug, on OM induced by 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) in hamsters.
METHODS: OM was induced by the i.p. administration of 5-FU, with excoriations of the cheek pouch mucosa. The animals were pretreated with i.p. ATV 1, 5 or 10 mg/kg or vehicle (saline and 5% (vol/vol) ethanol) 30 min before 5-FU injection and daily for 5 or 10 days. Samples of cheek pouches and main organs were removed for histopathological analysis, determination of TNF-α, IL-1β, nitrit

The past 10 years have seen substantial advances in molecularly targeted therapies for treatment of patients with cancer; however, chemotherapy will continue to be used. Therefore, the toxic effects of chemotherapy must be readily managed-especially nausea, vomiting, mucositis, and diarrhoea. For moderately to highly emetogenic chemotherapy, standard prophylactic treatment is an antagonist for 5-hydroxytryptamine 3 receptors (5-HT3R) combined with dexamethasone for the acute phase, and dexamethasone with another agent for prevention of the delayed phase. Palonoestron (a 5-HT3R antagonist) and
