Estimating black carbon levels using machine learning models in high-concentration regions.

Black carbon (BC) is emitted into the atmosphere during combustion processes, often in conjunction with emissions such as nitrogen oxides (NOx) and ozone (O3), which are also by-products of combustion. In highly polluted regions, combustion processes are one of the main sources of aerosols and particulate matter (PM) concentrations, which affect the radiative budget. Despite the high relevance of this air pollution metric, BC monitoring is quite expensive in terms of instrumentation and of maintenance and servicing. With the aim to provide tools to estimate BC while minimising instrumentation

Automated estimation of cancer cell deformability with machine learning and acoustic trapping.

Cell deformability is a useful feature for diagnosing various diseases (e.g., the invasiveness of cancer cells). Existing methods commonly inflict pressure on cells and observe changes in cell areas, diameters, or thickness according to the degree of pressure. Then, the Young's moduli (i.e., a measure of deformability) of cells are estimated based on the assumption that the degrees of the changes are inversely proportional to Young's moduli. However, manual measurements of the physical changes in cells are labor-intensive, and the subjectivity of the operators can intervene during this step, t

Benchmarking ensemble and deep learning models for drought-responsive gene prioritisation in rice using multi-omics data.

Identifying drought-responsive genes is critical for climate-resilient crop breeding, yet computational gene-trait association often relies on single-omics or generalized genomic datasets. Optimal algorithm selection for high-dimensional, small multi-omics datasets also remains a persistent challenge. We present a machine learning framework that extends the QTG-Finder feature set by integrating transcriptomic and proteomic features to classify drought-responsive genes in rice. Using MBKBase annotations, we evaluated the ability of these models to prioritise 336 drought-responsive genes among 2

Machine learning-guided risk stratification in elderly AML based on genomic, immunophenotypic and therapeutic profiles.

BACKGROUND: Elderly patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML) exhibit considerable biological and clinical heterogeneity, hindering precise prognosis. Existing prognostic systems inadequately capture the complexity of elderly AML due to their reliance on data from younger cohorts and omission of key factors like immunophenotypic markers and therapeutic profiles. This study aimed to develop and internally validate a machine learning-based prognostic model specifically tailored to elderly AML patients. METHODS: A total of 156 patients were analyzed using a two-stage modeling strategy. Clinical

Artificial Neural Networks Predicted the Overall Survival and Molecular Subtypes of Diffuse Large B-Cell Lymphoma Using a Pancancer Immune-Oncology Panel.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is one of the most frequent subtypes of non-Hodgkin lymphomas. We used artificial neural networks (multilayer perceptron and radial basis function), machine learning, and conventional bioinformatics to predict the overall survival and molecular subtypes of DLBCL. The series included 106 cases and 730 genes of a pancancer immune-oncology panel (nCounter) as predictors. The multilayer perceptron predicted the outcome with high accuracy, with an area under the curve (AUC) of 0.98, and ranked all the genes according to their importance. In a multivariate analy

An automated coronary artery disease identification using photoplethysmography signals with deep feature representations.

This study explores deep feature representations from photoplethysmography (PPG) signals for coronary artery disease (CAD) identification in 80 participants (40 with CAD). Finger PPG signals were processed using multilayer perceptron (MLP) and convolutional neural network (CNN) autoencoders, with performance assessed via 5-fold cross-validation. The CNN autoencoder model achieved the best results (recall 96.67%, precision 96.71%, accuracy 96.11%), outperforming MLP features and time-series imaging methods (<90%). These findings highlight the efficacy of CNN-extracted PPG features, offering a l

On machine learning classification of otoneurological data.

A dataset including cases of six otoneurological diseases was analysed using machine learning methods to investigate the classification problem of these diseases and to compare the effectiveness of different methods for this data. Linear discriminant analysis was the best method and next multilayer perceptron neural networks provided that the data was input into a network in the form of principal components. Nearest neighbour searching, k-means clustering and Kohonen neural networks achieved almost as good results as the former, but decision trees slightly worse. Thus, these methods fared well

A new approach based on Machine Learning for predicting corneal curvature (K1) and astigmatism in patients with keratoconus after intracorneal ring implantation.

Keratoconus (KC) is the most common type of corneal ectasia. A corneal transplantation was the treatment of choice until the last decade. However, intra-corneal ring implantation has become more and more common, and it is commonly used to treat KC thus avoiding a corneal transplantation. This work proposes a new approach based on Machine Learning to predict the vision gain of KC patients after ring implantation. That vision gain is assessed by means of the corneal curvature and the astigmatism. Different models were proposed; the best results were achieved by an artificial neural network based

When complexity does not pay: benchmarking deep learning and ensemble methods for biomarker discovery.

The integration of multi-omics data holds great promise for identifying robust and clinically relevant biomarkers, yet the increasing complexity of computational methods raises questions about their practical utility. In this study, we present a comprehensive benchmarking framework that evaluates 27 feature selection strategies and 11 predictive models across three real-world disease cohorts: Alzheimer's disease, progressive supranuclear palsy, and breast cancer. We compare traditional machine learning, ensemble-based methods, and state-of-the-art deep learning models in terms of predictive pe

Deep Learning Improves the MAGGIC Risk Score in Predicting Contrast-Induced Nephropathy in ST Elevation Myocardial Infraction Patients.

Contrast-induced nephropathy (CIN) is a serious complication in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI). Early identification of high-risk patients is essential to improve outcomes and reduce mortality. The Meta-Analysis Global Group in Chronic Heart Failure (MAGGIC) risk score was originally designed to predict mortality in heart failure patients, but its role in predicting CIN has not been fully explored. In the present retrospective study, 1403 STEMI patients treated with pPCI were analyzed. Those who developed CIN had

Research on Acoustic Scene Classification Based on Time-Frequency-Wavelet Fusion Network.

Acoustic scene classification aims to recognize the scenes corresponding to sound signals in the environment, but audio differences from different cities and devices can affect the model's accuracy. In this paper, a time-frequency-wavelet fusion network is proposed to improve model performance by focusing on three dimensions: the time dimension of the spectrogram, the frequency dimension, and the high- and low-frequency information extracted by a wavelet transform through a time-frequency-wavelet module. Multidimensional information was fused through the gated temporal-spatial attention unit,

Midsagittal jaw movements as a sleep/wake marker.

The seriousness of the Obstructive Sleep Apnea/Hypopnea Syndrome is measured by the apnea-hypopnea index (AHI), the number of sleep apneas and hypopneas over the total sleep time (TST). Cardiorespiratory signals are used to detect respiratory events while the TST is usually assessed by the analysis of electroencephalogram traces in polysomnography (PSG) or wrist actigraphy trace in portable monitoring. This paper presents a sleep/wake automatic detector that relies on a wavelet-based complexity measure of the midsagittal jaw movement signal and multilayer perceptrons. In all, 63 recordings wer

Machine learning based classification in obstetrics: evaluating models, partitioning strategies, and key predictors in cardiotocography.

Detecting fetal distress early and accurately is critical to the reduction of adverse neonatal outcomes. However, this proves to be a challenging task. The use of artificial intelligence (AI) provides a promising solution by facilitating the analysis of cardiotocography (CTG) signals in a more timely and precise manner. Despite this, AI in fetal monitoring faces several critical obstacles. In this study, we evaluated six experimental scenarios on a publicly available UCI CTG dataset consisting of 2,160 cases, each containing 21 features and examined how selected machine learning-based models,
