Multimodality imaging of developmental dysplasia of the hip.

Developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) is a spectrum disorder resulting in underdevelopment of the acetabulum. Radiographs and ultrasound are the mainstays for screening, with CT and MRI playing important roles in assessing outcome after treatment. The purpose of this article is to illustrate the use of multimodality imaging in the diagnosis and management of DDH.

Sternal cleft: prenatal multimodality imaging.

Sternal clefts have been reported sporadically, but there are no reports describing complete investigations of the malformation. We describe a child with isolated inferior sternal cleft diagnosed at 33 weeks of gestation and thoroughly investigated by prenatal US, MRI and CT and preoperative US. Our report highlights the importance of accurate and in-depth investigation by multimodality imaging that allows detection of accompanying serious anomalies and, hence, forms the basis for informed parental counselling and for postnatal interdisciplinary care.

Multimodality imaging of hydrogel scleral buckles.

BACKGROUND: Hydrogel scleral buckles were used for treating retinal detachment in the 1980s and early 1990 s. However, these devices have a propensity to degrade over time and cause several long-term complications, including hydration and overexpansion, fragmentation, extrusion, intrusion, and intraocular erosion, and the potential to mimic mass lesions. METHODS: The imaging features of hydrogel scleral buckles and their complications are reviewed in this article. RESULTS: Radiographic imaging plays an important role in managing patients with complications of hydrogel buckles. Hydrated buckl

Cardiac sarcoidosis evaluated by multimodality imaging.

An asymptomatic 62-year-old female patient with sarcoidosis was referred to our hospital for new-onset right bundle-branch block by electrocardiogram (ECG). She had been diagnosed with sarcoidosis by lymph node biopsy 3 years previously, and followed up by chest X-ray and ECG from then onward. Chest X-ray on admission showed bilateral lymph node enlargement, which was unchanged. Transthoracic echocardiogram showed wall thinning and severe hypokinesis in the basal portion of the left ventricular (LV) posterior-inferior wall, and coronary heart disease was excluded by conventional coronary angio

Multimodality imaging of a neonatal wandering spleen.

Wandering spleen, a rare entity, is caused by the absence or laxity of the normal anchoring splenic ligaments. Only three neonatal cases have been reported in the English-language literature. We present the clinical and multimodality imaging findings of a newborn with laceration and hemorrhage of a wandering spleen. The course was complicated by the concurrent diagnosis of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase deficiency, which confused the clinical picture when a falling hematocrit raised the question of rebleeding several days after presentation.

[Multimodality imaging of chronic tophaceous gout].

The diagnosis of gout is usually based on clinical presentation and laboratory findings. Imaging plays a role in the assessment and grading of articular damage related to chronic, long-standing disease, which is characterized by granulomatous synovitis, tophi, and erosions. Multimodality imaging of chronic tophaceous gout may be useful in clinical practice for a variety of purposes, including assessment of disease-related anatomical changes and monitoring of articular and soft-tissue lesions over time, especially in response to urate-lowering therapy. Radiography remains the primary imaging te

Imaging of the placenta: a multimodality pictorial review.

The placenta is often overlooked in the routine evaluation of a normal gestation, receiving attention only when an abnormality is detected. Although uncommon, abnormalities of the placenta are important to recognize owing to the potential for maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Pathologic conditions of the placenta include placental causes of hemorrhage, gestational trophoblastic disease, retained products of conception, nontrophoblastic placental tumors, metastases, and cystic lesions. Sonography remains the imaging modality of choice for evaluation of the placenta. Magnetic resonance

Multimodality imaging of tracheobronchial disorders in children.

The trachea and bronchial airways in children are subject to compromise by a number of extrinsic and intrinsic conditions, including congenital, inflammatory, infectious, traumatic, and neoplastic processes. Stridor, wheezing, and respiratory distress are the most common indications for imaging of the airway in children. Frontal and lateral chest and/or neck radiography constitute the initial investigations of choice in most cases. Options for additional imaging include airway fluoroscopy, contrast esophagography, computed tomography (CT), and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging. Advanced imaging

A versatile system for multimodality image fusion.

This paper presents a versatile system for registering and visualizing computed tomography and magnetic resonance images. The system utilizes a semi-automatic, surface-based registration strategy which has proven useful for registering a number of different anatomical structures. A triangular mesh approximates surfaces in one image set while a set of surface points is used as a surface approximation in the other set. A non-linear optimization procedure determines the transformation that minimizes the total sum-squared perpendicular distance between triangles of the mesh and surface points. Thi

Multimodality imaging in tricuspid regurgitation: A primer.

Tricuspid regurgitation (TR) is a common condition with prognostic significance, but with limited surgical options. There has been increased interest in the interventional management of TR after three recent clinical trials showing procedural safety and important quality of life gains. Interventional procedures require advanced imaging techniques for characterization of TR etiology, grade, as well as right heart anatomy and function. In this review, we describe the advantages and pitfalls of the main imaging modalities for TR assessment, namely echocardiography, cardiac magnetic resonance and

Multimodal imaging evaluation of the entheses in spondyloarthritis.

Multimodal imaging has become an important component in the evaluation of entheses in rheumatology. Clinical examination provides information on local tenderness and symptoms; however, these findings show variable correlation with structural or inflammatory alterations at the enthesis and should thus be complemented by imaging. Within the last decades, the availability, quality and diversity of imaging modalities have increased notably. Ultrasound (US) enables assessment of soft-tissue inflammation, structural abnormalities, and vascularization. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows visualiz

Multimodality Imaging for Thoracic Aortic Aneurysms.

Thoracic aortic disease involves diverse degenerative, syndromic, and genetic conditions, posing lifelong risks of high morbidity and mortality. Early detection and multimodal imaging are crucial for effective surveillance and reducing complications. Understanding imaging characteristics and disease-specific features enables personalized management strategies. Emerging research on parameters like aortic length and indexed ratios promises to refine risk assessment and surgical timing beyond traditional size criteria. However, data gaps remain for heterogeneous groups such as hereditary thoracic

Multimodality imaging findings in secondary dysmenorrhea.

AIM: Dysmenorrhea, characterised by painful menstruation, is a prevalent condition affecting up to 90% of menstruating women, with a significant impact on quality of life and daily functioning. Primary dysmenorrhea occurs without identifiable pelvic pathology as a result of elevated prostaglandins and leukotrienes resulting in uterine contractility and crampy pelvic pain. Secondary dysmenorrhea, on the other hand, arises from identifiable pelvic pathology most commonly endometriosis. Other aetiologies include uterine leiomyomas, adenomyosis, congenital Mullerian duct abnormalities and infectio

Multimodality imaging review of retroperitoneal fibrosis.

Retroperitoneal fibrosis (RPF) is a rare fibroinflammatory disease with idiopathic and secondary causes. Idiopathic disease is more common and is believed to be immune mediated; associations with autoimmune diseases and/or inflammatory disorders such as IgG4 related disease are often present. Common complications include hydronephrosis and venous stenosis and/or thrombosis. Due to its nonspecific clinical presentation, imaging is vital for diagnosis; in addition, imaging may help distinguish idiopathic from secondary causes and can aid in distinguishing early/active disease from chronic/inacti

Multimodality imaging of urinary tract tuberculosis.

Imaging is a key component of diagnosis and treatment response evaluation of urinary tract tuberculosis (UT TB). Tuberculosis can have a long latency, but if found early, one may have the opportunity to prevent complications such as ureteral strictures, obstructive nephropathy, contracted (thimble) bladder, renal parenchymal destruction/calcification, and renal failure. Imaging can aid in diagnosis and differential diagnoses, evaluate the extent of disease and complications, and guide image-directed biopsy, surgical planning, and evaluation of treatment response. Imaging abnormalities in the r

Multimodality Imaging Diagnosis in Infective Endocarditis.

Imaging is an important tool in the diagnosis and management of infective endocarditis (IE). Echocardiography is an essential examination, especially in native valve endocarditis (NVE), but its diagnostic accuracy is reduced in prosthetic valve endocarditis (PVE). The diagnostic ability is superior for transoesophageal echocardiography (TEE), but a negative test cannot exclude PVE. Both transthoracic echocardiography (TTE) and TEE can provide normal or inconclusive findings in up to 30% of cases, especially in patients with prosthetic devices. New advanced non-invasive imaging tests are increa
