The present study was performed to know the infection status of intestinal helminths in a most common species of field mice, Apodemus agrarius, from 2 southern regions of Korea. Total 133 and 103 mice were collected by the mouse trap in Hapcheon-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do and Gurye-gun, Jeollanam-do, respectively, from July 2005 to June 2006. The small intestine of each mouse was resected and longitudinally opened with a pair of scissors. The intestinal contents were washed with 0.85% saline until the supernatant became clear. Helminths were collected with naked eyes or under a stereomicroscope fro

Dobrava-Belgrade virus (DOBV) is a hantavirus species that causes the most severe form of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) in Europe. DOBV has been detected in three Apodemus rodents: A. flavicollis, A. agrarius and A. ponticus. These emerging viruses appear throughout the Balkan Peninsula including Serbia as its central part. In this study, we examined the seroprevalence, molecular epidemiology and phylogenetics of DOBV from A. flavicollis captured at six Serbian localities. Furthermore, we applied microsatellite typing of host animal genome to analyse the role of host kinship in

Lassa fever is an acute viral zoonotic illness caused by Lassa virus, an arenavirus known to be responsible for a severe haemorrhagic fever characterised by fever, muscle aches, sore throat, nausea, vomiting and, chest and abdominal pain. The virus exhibits persistent, asymptomatic infection with profuse urinary virus excretion in the ubiquitous rodent vector, Mastomys natalensis. Lassa fever is endemic in West Africa and has been reported from Sierra Leone, Guinea, Liberia, and Nigeria. Some studies indicate that 300,000 to 500,000 cases of Lassa fever and 5000 deaths occur yearly across West

Infections of Babesia microti (Apicomplexa, Piroplasmida), a common erythroparasitic protozoon of Holarctic rodents, are not widely acknowledged in Poland. The presence of this parasite in various species of wild rodents has been well documented throughout the northern temperate zone of North America, Europe, and Eurasia. However, human babesiosis attributable to infection with B. microti has been reported only from the north-eastern and upper midwestern United States and Japan. We recently carried out an epizootiological survey investigating the prevalence of B. microti both in the tick Ixode

The role of vitamin A was evaluated for its chemotherapeutic and chemoprophylactic action against Acanthocheilonema viteae infection in Mastomys coucha. Vitamin A was administered for 10 days, five days before infection and five days post infection. On day 0 experimental animals as well as controls were infected with L3, the infective stage. Establishment of the worms revealed significantly less percentage of worm recovery over untreated controls. Cell-mediated response was found to be the cause of this reduction in worm recovery, whereas humoral response was not significant as IgG, IgA and Ig

Myofibroblasts are considered to be the villains of regeneration, causing scarring and fibrosis after damage in many systems of the body, including the skin. They are induced by the action of pro-fibrotic cytokines released from various immune cells and express α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA). Acomys, the spiny mouse, does not fibrose after full-thickness skin injury, it instead will regenerate all the tissues removed. We compared the appearance and behavior of myofibroblasts after skin injury in Mus (scarring) and Acomys (regenerating). In Mus, myofibroblasts appear soon after wounding, remain

BACKGROUND: Small mammals are vital to ecosystem health and serve as key indicators of environmental changes. Population trends in the UK for many species have remained largely undocumented, however, emphasizing the need for more effective monitoring tools. This study evaluates the efficacy of three camera trap designs for detecting small mammals: no-box camera traps (NCTs), open box camera traps (OCTs), and closed tube camera traps (TCTs).
METHODS: The study was conducted at Silent Valley Nature Reserve, South Wales, focusing on Fagus sylvatica woodland. The authors thank the reserve manager

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) caused by Leishmania major is a zoonotic disease transmitted by phlebotomine sand flies. Identification of reservoir hosts is critical for understanding transmission and guiding control. While Psammomys obesus and Meriones shawi are recognized reservoirs in North Africa, the role of other rodents remains unclear. We experimentally assessed the reservoir potential of Acomys cahirinus seurati from southeastern Algeria. Animals were intradermally infected, and clinical signs and infectiousness to sand flies were monitored. Parasite persistence in skin and visceral tis

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have attracted widespread attention as a new global pollutant, mainly due to the abuse of antibiotics. To investigate the diversity of ARGs in three rodent species, we used metagenomic sequencing analysis to analyze the diversity of antibiotic resistance genes of 17 individuals of Apodemus peninsulae and 17 individuals of Myodes rufocanus collected from Mudanfeng, and nine individuals of Apodemus agrarius collected from Sandaoguan. A total of 19 types and 248 subclasses of ARGs were detected in the three rodent species. Seven ARGs showed significant differenc

Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a zoonotic disease caused by the rodent-transmitted orthohantaviruses (HVs), with China possessing the most cases globally. The virus hosts in China are Apodemus agrarius and Rattus norvegicus, and the disease spread is strongly influenced by global climate dynamics. To assess and predict the spatiotemporal trends of HFRS from 2005 to 2098, we collected historical HFRS data in mainland China (2005-2020), historical and projected climate and population data (2005-2098), and spatial variables including biotic, environmental, topographical, and soci

Zoonotic diseases threaten human health worldwide and are often associated with anthropogenic disturbance. Predicting how disturbance influences spillover risk is critical for effective disease intervention but difficult to achieve at fine spatial scales. Here, we develop a method that learns the spatial distribution of a reservoir species from aerial imagery. Our approach uses neural networks to extract features of known or hypothesized importance from images. The spatial distribution of these features is then summarized and linked to spatially explicit reservoir presence/absence data using b

Lassa fever (Lf) is a viral haemorrhagic disease endemic to West Africa and is caused by the Lassa mammarenavirus. The rodent Mastomys natalensis serves as the primary reservoir and its ecology and behaviour have been linked to the distinct spatial and temporal patterns in the incidence of Lf. Nigeria has experienced an unprecedented epidemic that lasted from January until April of 2018, which has been followed by subsequent epidemics of Lf in the same period every year since. While previous research has modelled the case seasonality within Nigeria, this did not capture the seasonal variation

This study documents the diversity of intestinal parasites in the eastern broad-toothed field mouse (Apodemus mystacinus) along the altitudinal gradient of Ibrahim River in Mount Lebanon during the spring and autumn of 2017. A total of 190 A. mystacinus were trapped in seventeen sites (6 riparian, 11 non-riparian) and examined for intestinal parasites. Eight intestinal parasites were identified including Heligmosomoides polygyrus, Trichuris muris, Syphacia frederici, Protospirura muris, and Aspiculuris tetraptera (nematodes), Hymenolepis diminuta (cestode), Brachylaima spp. (trematode), and Ei

The effect of combined levonorgestrel (P) and quinestrol (E) on the fertility of striped field mouse (Apodemus agrarius) has not been evaluated. We performed a series of experiments in both the laboratory and field to assess the effect of P and/or E on the fertility of A. agrarius. In the laboratory, to test the time-dependent anti-fertility effects of P and E, as well as their mixtures, 90 male striped field mice were randomly assigned to 6 treatment groups (n = 60), and a control group (n = 30). Mice in 3 treatment groups were administered 1 of the 3 compounds (1 mg⋅kg- 1 [body weight] EP-1,

We conducted a survey for group-specific indirect immunofluorescence antibody to mammarenaviruses by using Lassa fever and Mopeia virus antigens on serum specimens of 5,363 rodents of 33 species collected in South Africa and Zimbabwe during 1964-1994. Rodents were collected for unrelated purposes or for this study and stored at -70°C. We found antibody to be widely distributed in the 2 countries; antibody was detected in serum specimens of 1.2%-31.8% of 14 species of myomorph rodents, whereas 19 mammarenavirus isolates were obtained from serum specimens and viscera of 4 seropositive species. The objective of this study was to investigate evidence of emerging anaplasmosis and bartonellosis in rodents from endemic areas of Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand. Rodent trapping was undertaken in 13 sub-districts of Muang District. The live-capture traps were set up in three locations of selected scrub typhus patient houses for three consecutive nights. Wild-caught rodent whole blood samples and associated ticks and fleas were collected and tested for Anaplasma spp. and Bartonella spp. In addition, heat maps using GIS software were used to determine the density of infection of positive wild-cau

Lassa virus (LASV) is a highly prevalent mammarenavirus in West Africa and is maintained in nature in a persistently infected rodent host, Mastomys natalensis, which is widely spread in sub-Saharan Africa. LASV infection of humans can cause Lassa fever (LF), a disease associated with high morbidity and significant mortality. Recent evidence indicates an LASV expansion outside its traditional endemic areas. In 2017, the World Health Organization (WHO) included LASV in top-priority pathogens and released a Target Product Profile (TPP) for vaccine development. Likewise, in 2018, the US Food and D

The greatest epidemiological significance of leptospirosis in Europe comes from the fact that it is the most widespread zoonosis in the world. However, epizootiological data, especially information on maintenance hosts such as small wild mammals, are largely missing. To fill this gap in data in Serbia, we used RT-PCR for the detection of pathogenic Leptospira species and analysed 107 animals belonging to six species of small wild mammals (Apodemus agrarius, Apodemus flavicollis, Microtus arvalis, Myodes glareolus, Microtus subterraneus and Sorex araneus) collected from two localities.
