The Value of DICER1 Mutation Analysis in "Subtle" Diagnostically Challenging Embryonal Rhabdomyosarcomas of the Uterine Cervix.

Embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma of the uterine cervix is a rare neoplasm which is almost invariably associated with pathogenic somatic or germline DICER1 mutations; patients with germline mutations have DICER1 syndrome. We report 2 subtle cervical embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma, one occurring in a 21-yr-old woman with a known history of DICER1 syndrome and the other in a 19-yr-old woman with no history of DICER1 syndrome or DICER1-associated neoplasms. Both neoplasms focally involved otherwise benign endocervical polyps and were characterized histologically by subtle areas of increased stromal cellular

Rhabdomyosarcoma of the liver associated with long-term oral contraceptive use. Possible role of estrogens in the genesis of embryologically distinct liver tumors.

We report a case of rhabdomyosarcoma arising in a 34-year-old woman with a 16-year history of oral contraceptive use. This is the first reported case of hepatic rhabdomyosarcoma associated with oral contraception. The tumor did not grossly or microscopically involve biliary structures or gall bladder. It was mostly comprised of undifferentiated spindle cells that were histologically similar to embryonal sarcoma. Foci of cells showing rhabdomyoblastic differentiation blended into poorly formed muscle bundles. No epithelial neoplasm was identified by either morphologic or immunohistochemical ana

Tumors masquerading as neurological diseases: A caution for clinicians in planning diagnosis and treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Neurological diseases can be due to direct diseases of the central nervous system (CNS) or peripheral nervous system (PNS) or be a bystander syndrome of systemic diseases. Treatment options depend on the cause. Toxic, metabolic and nutritional, and immune-mediated consequences of clinically occult neoplasms produce a spectrum of neurological diseases, recognition of which has therapeutic and prognostic importance. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Children, as well as adults who presented to the authors in the last 5 years with neurological diseases and later their diseases could be diagnos

Differential binding of an SRF/NK-2/MEF2 transcription factor complex in normal versus neoplastic smooth muscle tissues.

The malignant potential of smooth muscle tumors correlates strongly with the disappearance of gamma-smooth muscle isoactin, a lineage-specific marker of smooth muscle development. In this paper, we identify a 36-base pair regulatory motif containing an AT-rich domain, CArG box, and a non-canonical NK-2 homeodomain-binding site that has the capacity to regulate smooth muscle-specific gene expression in cultured intestinal smooth muscle cells. Serum-response factor associates with an NK-2 transcription factor via protein-protein interactions and binds to the core CArG box element. Our studies su

Angiomyolipoma of Uterine Cervix: Report of a Rare Case.

Angiomyolipoma (AML) is classified as perivascular epithelioid cell neoplasm (PEComas) and is commonly seen in the kidney. AML is a solid mesenchymal neoplasm rarely encountered at the extrarenal site. Extrarenal AML is infrequently seen in the female genital tract. Four cases of AML of the cervix have been reported in the literature to our knowledge. We report a case of a 44-year-old female patient who presented with complaints of "lower abdominal pressure" and a history of post-coital bleeding and human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. A cyst in the uterine cervix was found incidentally on co

Ultrasound and clinical characteristics of uterine smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential (STUMPs).

OBJECTIVE(S): Smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential are rare uterine neoplasms. Their identification through imaging is still limited due to the few available descriptions in the scientific literature. The objective of this paper is to provide clinical and ultrasound features that could support an early identification of these neoplasms. STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively evaluated preoperative sonographic data of patients receiving a histopathological diagnosis of smooth muscle tumors of uncertain malignant potential between 2014 and 2019 at the S. Anna Hospital (Turin, Italy),

[The extensor indicis brevis muscle--a rare anatomic variant. A case example and critical review of the literature].

A 27-year old man had a swelling over the back of his right hand that was painful on exertion. Operative revision revealed an extensor indicis brevis muscle. The frequency of this variant at autopsies is markedly below one percent; in addition to true neoplasms, the differential diagnosis includes ganglion cysts and synovialitis of the extensors.

Early development of pembrolizumab-induced fulminant myositis and cardiotoxicity in a patient with metastatic thymoma.

Herein, we report the case of a 48-year-old woman with metastatic thymoma who developed fulminant myositis with cardiotoxicity after one cycle of pembrolizumab treatment. She presented with severe muscle weakness and dyspnea, and her laboratory test results revealed increased muscle and cardiac enzyme levels. Despite an urgent initiation of systemic steroids, her muscle weakness and hypercapnia worsened, for which intravenous immunoglobulin G was initiated. However, hypercapnia did not improve, but the patient recovered completely after plasma exchange. Patients with thymic neoplasms could be

Progressive Infiltrative Lipoma of the Masseter Muscle Associated with Unilateral Orofacial Discomfort in a Dog.

Intramuscular lipomas are uncommon benign adipocytic neoplasms characterized by infiltrative growth within skeletal muscle. This report describes the clinical, imaging, surgical, and histopathologic findings of an infiltrative lipoma arising from the masseter muscle in a dog presenting with orofacial discomfort suggestive of neurologic or painful orofacial disorders. Ultrasonography demonstrated heterogeneously hyperechoic adipose tissue within the right masseter muscle. Computed tomography identified a progressively enlarging fat-attenuating intramuscular lesion containing infiltrative extens

Orbital Metastasis from Hidradenocarcinoma.

Hidradenocarcinoma is a rare form of malignant adnexal tumor. This malignant tumor has been reported to metastasize to regional lymph nodes, and distant metastasis into structures like the orbit and extraocular muscle is uncommon. Orbital metastasis comprises about 10% of all orbital neoplasms. Common systemic malignancies contributing to orbital metastasis are breast cancer, prostate cancer, and skin malignancy, melanoma. We report the case of a middle-aged man with left axillary hidradenocarcinoma with an orbital metastatic lesion infiltrating the inferior rectus muscle with optic nerve invo

A large parosteal ossifying lipoma of lower limb encircling the femur.

INTRODUCTION: Lipoma is a benign soft tissue neoplasm that may contain mesenchymal elements, as a result of metaplastic process. Ossification in benign and malignant soft tissue tumors can also manifest due to metaplastic process. CASE PRESENTATION: A 45 year old woman presented with a large thigh mass. The mass was developed one and a half year ago which insidiously increased in size and was associated with movement restriction. Radiological findings revealed soft tissue neoplasm on antero-medial aspect of thigh encircling the femur and displacing adjacent muscles. Fine trabeculations were s

Pure cutaneous paratesticular leiomyosarcoma of the scrotum: A rare case report.

Leiomyosarcoma (LMS) is a malignant mesenchymal neoplasm arising from the smooth muscle. Paratesticular LMSs are commonly located in the epididymis or spermatic cord. Pure scrotal cutaneous paratesticular LMS arising from the dartos muscle is very rare. Less than 40 cases have been reported in the literature to date. We report a case of pure scrotal cutaneous LMS in a 45-year-old patient.

The leiomyomatous stroma in renal cell carcinomas is polyclonal and not part of the neoplastic process.

Some renal epithelial neoplasms, such as renal angiomyoadenomatous tumor, clear cell papillary renal cell carcinoma and renal cell carcinoma with smooth muscle stroma, contain a variably prominent smooth muscle stromal component. Whether or not this leiomyomatous stroma is part of the neoplastic proliferation has not been firmly established. We studied the clonality status of 14 renal cell carcinomas with a prominent smooth muscle stromal component (four renal angiomyoadenomatous tumors/clear cell papillary carcinomas, five clear cell carcinomas, two papillary carcinomas, and three renal cell

A case of malignant granular cell tumor in the sigmoid colon.

Granular cell tumor (GCT) is an uncommon, usually benign neoplasm; however, a malignant potential has been described. Malignant GCT is an extremely rare neoplasm showing rapid growth and invasion into adjacent muscles, lymph nodes, or vessels, or even distant metastasis. We recently experienced a case of a histologically benign or atypical but clinically malignant GCT, with invasion of the lymph nodes and vessels in the sigmoid colon, diagnosed by segmental colon resection with lymph node dissection. We also performed a review of relevant medical literature.

Primary mesenchymal (nonangiomatous/nonlymphomatous) neoplasms occurring in the canine spleen: anatomic classification, immunohistochemistry, and mitotic activity correlated with patient survival.

Surgical submissions from canine splenectomy cases spanning a 3-year period (1988-1990) were evaluated. Eighty seven neoplasms of the spleen considered to be of nonangiomatous and nonlymphomatous origin were selected for morphologic classification, mitotic index determination, immunohistochemical analysis, and patient survival determination. In 76/87 cases, patient survival information was available, and the mitotic index was determined in 83/87 cases. Immunohistochemistry for selected antigens (vimentin, desmin, smooth muscle actin, myosin, and factor VIII-related antigen) was performed in 58

STRN::NTRK3-fused neoplasm with "monster cells" in the pelvis of a young adult female: expanding the clinicopathologic spectrum of NTRK-rearranged neoplasms.

Gene fusions involving neurotrophic tyrosine receptor kinase (NTRK) genes represent uncommon genetic alterations that may occur across a wide spectrum of tumor types. NTRK-rearranged sarcomas are most frequently identified in pediatric mesenchymal neoplasms, although they have also been described, less commonly, in adult mesenchymal tumors. We present the case of a 28-year-old woman with a large pelvic mass arising in relation to the psoas muscle. It was histologically composed of a dual cell population consisting of small hyperchromatic irregular cells intermixed with markedly pleomorphic "mo

Rapidly progressive myositis as the sole manifestation of a concurrent gastric carcinoma.

Inflammatory myopathies including polymyositis and dermatomyositis are autoimmune disorders presenting with characteristic muscle weakness. These diseases, especially dermatomyositis, have a well-known association with a wide variety of neoplasms including lung, breast, ovary and colon cancers. Here we report the case of a 58-year-old man who presented with a 3-week history of myositis and was simultaneously diagnosed with gastric cancer.

[A clinical case of piloleiomyoma].

The article describes a clinical case of a benign tumor from smooth muscle cells - piloleiomyoma. The incidence of leiomyoma in the skin is 3-5% of all leiomyomas. A 27-year-old patient applied to a medical institution with complaints about an intradermal formation in the ear region that occurred repeatedly within 5 months after surgical treatment. After the first surgical intervention, the patient was consulted in various medical organizations, where the following diagnoses were made: «nodular fasciitis», «smooth muscle tumor without signs of malignancy» and «non-epithelial spindle cell neopl
