Fatal poisoning of Old Polish ducks with Amanita muscaria.

BACKGROUND: Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) is a poisonous mushroom containing ibotenic acid (IBA) and muscimol (MUS), two neuroactive alkaloids capable of causing severe or fatal intoxication. While human poisoning is well documented, information on fatal intoxication in birds is limited. This report presents the first documented case of fatal poisoning of Old Polish ducks following ingestion of A. muscaria, confirmed by anatomopathological and toxicological analyses. METHODS: Post-mortem specimens, including blood, heart, brain, kidney, liver, lung, pectoral and femoral muscles, and gastrointe

Dynamic myocardial injury and variable hallucination latency in Psilocybe keralensis poisoning: a molecularly confirmed case series from China.

INTRODUCTION: Psychoactive Psilocybe spp. mushrooms pose significant public health risks. We report a cluster of Psilocybe keralensis poisonings in Chengdu, China, highlighting its unique clinical features and cardiovascular complications. CASE SERIES: Four patients ingested 16-90 g of wild mushrooms (misidentified as an edible species, but later molecularly confirmed as Psilocybe keralensis). Prodromal symptoms (e.g., dizziness) emerged within 5-20 min, but the onset of hallucinations varied widely (10-180 min). All patients developed hypertension (systolic blood pressure >150 mmHg), with on

[Poisoning in general practitioner's practice].

Every year the Belgian Poison Center deals with more than 50.000 calls. When a medical evaluation is needed, the patients are often advised to contact their general practitioner. This article gives the general practitioner some clues to face common or severe poisoning situations like benzodiazepines, antidepressants, analgesics (paracetamol, ibuprofen, methadone...), nose drops, bleaches, petroleum distillates, mushrooms or carbon monoxide exposure.

Endocrine hormone abnormalities in Amanita poisoning.

Mushroom poisoning from the genus Amanita is being reported with increasing frequency in the United States. Endocrine hormone abnormalities were investigated in four patients who ingested mushrooms of the Amanita genus ("death cap", "destroying angel"). Marked abnormalities were found in the hormones controlling glucose, calcium, and thyroid homeostasis. Insulin and C-peptide concentrations were elevated at admission, indicating that the hypoglycemia associated with Amanita poisoning may not be solely secondary to hepatic failure. Serum calcitonin concentrations were elevated in conjunction wi

Acute liver injury and facial edema following ingestion of mushroom Descolea quercina.

In September 2025, a fresh wild mushroom poisoning incident involving five individuals occurred in Sichuan Province, China, three of whom developed poisoning symptoms. Mushroom specimens were collected and identified as Descolea quercina through morphological and phylogenetic analyses. Epidemiological investigation showed that one patient with a high estimated intake (>500 g) developed acute liver injury, with markedly elevated transaminases (ALT 525 U/L, AST 482 U/L), along with facial edema-a rarely reported sign. This patient had stable hyperthyroidism and responded favorably to hepatoprote

Toxic metabolite profiling of Inocybe virosa.

Wild mushroom foraging involves a high risk of unintentional consumption of poisonous mushrooms which is a serious health concern. This problem arises due to the close morphological resemblances of toxic mushrooms with edible ones. The genus Inocybe comprises both edible and poisonous species and it is therefore important to differentiate them. Knowledge about their chemical nature will unambiguously determine their edibility and aid in an effective treatment in case of poisonings. In the present study, the presence of volatile toxic metabolites was verified in Inocybe virosa by gas chromatogr

Lepiota castanea mushroom growing in Turkiye does not contain phallotoxins and amatoxins.

The number of poisoning cases caused by the Lepiota genus is globally increasing. This genus has more poisonous species than the Amanita genus, and many Lepiota species can cause severe toxicity and death if ingested. As recognized in the literature, L. castanea is a toxic species containing amatoxin. Although crude analytical methods have shown that L. castanea contains amatoxins, more recent and sensitive analyses suggest otherwise. Toxin concentrations can vary even among the same fungal species due to geographical and climatic differences. Therefore, this confusion can be resolved by analy

Emerging mycotoxic syndromes in France: Epidemiological trends and public health implications (2015-2022).

Mushroom poisoning is a common cause of toxic exposure, and several "new mycotoxic syndromes" have been recognized since the 1990s. We conducted a retrospective multicenter study using the French Poison Control Centers cases database to describe their epidemiology in mainland France between 2015 and 2022. Cases involving species known to cause one of the seven « new » syndromes were included. Overall, 275 cases were identified, accounting for 1.7 % of the 2000 mushroom poisonings reported annually. Four syndromes were observed: neurotoxic morel syndrome (n = 159, 57.8 %), flagellate dermatitis

High-Resolution LC-MS Characterization of Ramaria flavobrunnescens, a Coral Mushroom Toxic to Livestock, Reveals Fungal, Bacterial, and Eucalyptus Tree Metabolites.

Ramaria flavobrunnescens is an ectomycorrhizal coral mushroom that is often found growing in eucalyptus forests. The mushroom has been linked to accidental ingestion-associated livestock poisonings in South America, though the toxicological agent has not yet been described. Mushroom samples identified as R. flavobrunnescens were analyzed by liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) to determine the potential source of the toxicity, and to provide a metabolomic profile of the species. Previously reported Ramaria secondary metabolites were detected, including ramarins, r

[Some issues of death cap (Amanita phalloides) poisoning based on cases treated in Poznan Department of Toxicology in 2010].

Death cap (Amanita plalloides) poisonings are still a great diagnostic and therapeutic problem in Poland. Despite of regular educational activity, the Poles are confusing toxic mushrooms with edible ones. Death cap is mainly a cause of accidental poisoning, although suicidal intoxications also occur. This study presents some authors'observations which were made during diagnosing and treatment of patients hospitalized in Poznan Department of Toxicology in 2010 year. The circumstances of poisonings, kind of symptoms and time when they developed, the main biochemical abnormalities are shown. The

The toxicology of 1-acetyl-2-methyl-2-formyl hydrazine (Ac-MFH).

The hepatotoxic and cancerogenic N-methyl-N-formyl hydrazine (MFH), which is formed from the mushroom poison, gyromitrin, by hydrolytic cleavage in vivo and in vitro during food processing, loses its hepatotoxicity and its influence on the renal function of rats after acetylation at the free NH2-moiety. The importance of MFH-acetylation with regard to an inhibition of microsomal conversion of MFH into a toxic nitrosamide is considered. The known genetically determined heterogeneity of the acetylation rate for hydrazine derivates in man may explain the observed differences in sensitivity toward

Energy disorders caused by mitochondrial dysfunction contribute to α-amatoxin-induced liver function damage and liver failure.

Mushroom toxicity is the main branch of foodborne poisoning, and liver damage caused by amatoxin poisoning accounts for more than 90 % of deaths due to mushroom poisoning. Alpha-amatoxin (α-AMA) has been considered the primary toxin from amatoxin-containing mushrooms, which is responsible for hepatotoxicity and death. However, the mechanism underlying liver failure due to α-AMA remains unclear. This study constructed animal and cell models. In the animal experiments, we investigated liver injury in BALB/c mice at different time points after α-AMA treatment, and explored the process of inflamma

What's for dinner this time?: DNA authentication of "wild mushrooms" in food products sold in the USA.

Mushrooms have been consumed by humans for thousands of years, and while some have gastronomic and nutritional value, it has long been recognized that only select species of mushrooms are suitable for consumption. Adverse health effects of consuming poisonous mushrooms range from mild illness to death. Many valuable edible mushrooms are either impractical or unable to be grown commercially, requiring them to be harvested from the wild. In the U.S., products containing these wild-collected mushrooms are often sold with the nonspecific and undefined label "wild mushrooms," although in some cases
