Complex genetic structure of the rabies virus in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces, Thailand: implications for canine rabies control.

Dog vaccination and population management have been suggested as priorities in attempts at disease control in canine rabies-endemic countries. Budget limitations and the complexity of social, cultural and religious variables have complicated progress in the developing world. In Bangkok, Thailand, an intensive canine vaccination and sterilization programme has been in place since November 2002. Our objective was to determine if the rabies virus could be mapped according to its genetic variations and geographical location on the small localized scale of Bangkok and its surrounding provinces. Split insertions of the oblique extraocular muscles in Carnivora.

This study examines the presence or absence of split insertions (i.e., bifurcated/bifid tendons) in the oblique extraocular muscles (O-EOMs) in various carnivoran and non-carnivoran mammals. The O-EOMs were dissected in 44 mammalian orbital specimens (20 families, 36 species). Split insertions were present in Carnivora species exclusively. Split insertions were found in both superior oblique (SO) and inferior oblique (IO) muscles in all 6 Felidae specimens examined. The SO tendons split after the trochlea and coursed anterior and posterior to the global layer of the superior rectus (SR) before

Distribution, threats, population trends, and ecology of the Saharan Striped Polecat (Poecilictis libyca) in Tunisia: a questionnaire and field-based survey.

The Saharan Striped Polecat (Carnivora, Mustelidae, Poecilictis libyca) is a small mustelid for which comprehensive biological studies and demographic data across its geographic range are lacking. Throughout 2018, we investigated the distribution, abundance, and threats to this species in Tunisia by means of a questionnaire survey, spotlighting, and collection of other field-based evidence. Our study resulted in 32 new records, including 1 outside the previously known range in the south, while a contraction of its northern limits was determined from historical records (literature, museum sampl

Molecular survey of Besnoitia spp. (Apicomplexa) in faeces from European wild mesocarnivores in Spain.

Numerous studies have unsuccessfully tried to unravel the definitive host of the coccidian parasite Besnoitia besnoiti. Cattle infections by B. besnoiti cause a chronic and debilitating condition called bovine besnoitiosis that has emerged in Europe during the last two decades, mainly due to limitations in its control associated with the absence of vaccines and therapeutical tools. Although the exact transmission pathways of B. besnoiti is currently unknown, it is assumed that the parasite might have an indirect life cycle with a carnivore as definitive host. Current lack of studies in wildlif

A simulation model to predict the most efficient way to utilise operational resources when vaccinating badgers against bTB.

Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is a disease carried by badgers that seriously impacts the health and productivity of cattle in the United Kingdom (UK). The UK government's aim is to be officially TB-free in cattle by 2038 in England and badger vaccination is one approach that can be used to achieve this. We use a simulation model to compare the relative performance of different vaccination strategies (treatment every year, every second year and every third year) under different field conditions and assumptions about vaccine efficacy. Population density, disease prevalence and duration of vaccine-in

Evaluating sensitivity and specificity of the DPP Vet TB assay in badgers using Bayesian latent class models.

In the UK and Ireland, the European badger is the main wildlife reservoir for Mycobacterium bovis (M. bovis), the causal agent of bovine tuberculosis (bTB). The ability to diagnose M. bovis infection in badgers is critical to understanding the epidemiology of the infection in this species and for informing control strategies. In this study we determined the sensitivity and specificity of a lateral flow assay (Dual Path Platform (DPP) VetTB assay) to identify infected live badgers using two blood sample types: fresh whole blood (suitable for immediate testing in the field without further proces

Detection of Dirofilaria immitis in golden jackals (Canis aureus L.) but not in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes L.) and European badgers (Meles meles L.) in Croatia.

BACKGROUND: Dirofilariosis is a parasitic mosquito-borne disease caused by members of the genus Dirofilaria, which includes Dirofilaria immitis and Dirofilaria repens. Surveillance studies in Europe have revealed that D. immitis can also be detected in a range of wild carnivores, raising questions over the impact of infections on wild carnivore animal health but also whether these populations may act as a reservoir for infection of other species, including domestic dogs and humans. METHODS: In the current study, we conducted surveillance for the presence of D. immitis in several wild carnivor

Borrelia persica infection in wild carnivores in Israel: molecular characterization and new potential reservoirs.

BACKGROUND: Borrelia persica causes tick-borne relapsing fever in Israel, the eastern Mediterranean basin, and Asia. Relapsing fever is associated with severe illness and potentially death in humans and animals. Since B. persica infection has rarely been described in wild animals, the aim of this study was to evaluate the prevalence of infection with B. persica in wild carnivores in Israel. METHODS: Spleen and blood clot samples from wild carnivores, which underwent necropsy, were tested for the presence of Borrelia DNA by real-time polymerase chain reaction (PCR). PCR products were sequenced

Molecular survey of Babesia spp. in red foxes (Vulpes Vulpes), Asian badgers (Meles leucurus) and their ticks in China.

Babesia species (Apicomplexa: Piroplasmorida) are tick-borne protozoan hemoparasites, which pose a significant threat to domestic animals, wildlife and humans. This study aimed to determine and characterize Babesia species in red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), Asian badgers (Meles leucurus) and their ticks. Blood, heart, liver, spleen, lung, kidney, large intestine and small intestine were collected from 19 wild carnivores (12 red foxes and 7 Asian badgers). All ticks were removed from these animals and identified according to morphological and molecular characteristics. The samples were tested for th

A combined measure of tuberculous lesions for assessing the efficacy of vaccination against tuberculosis (Mycobacterium bovis) in European badgers (Meles meles) supports the 3Rs principle of reduction.

BACKGROUND: An oral vaccine is a potential tool to tackle the reservoir of Mycobacterium bovis in European badgers (Meles meles), which contributes to tuberculosis of cattle in the British Isles. Inferences about vaccine protection against experimental challenge with M. bovis depend on the measurement of tuberculosis. Assessment of tuberculosis in larger species, such as badgers, is typically based on the tuberculous lesions visible at post-mortem examination and histopathology. We have developed a robust scoring system for tuberculous lesions by combining several parallel measures, which we c

Complete mitochondrial genomes of Gnathostoma nipponicum and Gnathostoma sp., and their comparison with other Gnathostoma species.

Gnathostomiasis is a foodborne zoonotic parasitosis caused by Gnathostoma nematodes. It has caused significant public problems worldwide, but its molecular biology is limited. The purpose of this study was to decode the complete mitochondrial (mt) genomes of Gnathostoma nipponicum and Gnathostoma sp., and compare their mt sequences with other Gnathostoma species. The complete mt genome sequences were amplified by long-range PCR and determined by subsequent primer walking. The complete mt genomes of G. nipponicum and Gnathostoma sp. were 14,093bp and 14,391bp, respectively. Both of the two mt g

THE OCCURRENCE OF PATHOGENS IN AN ENDANGERED POPULATION OF AMERICAN BADGERS (TAXIDEA TAXUS JACKSONI) IN ONTARIO, CANADA.

American badgers ( Taxidea taxus jacksoni) at the periphery of the species' range in Ontario, Canada, are listed as endangered because of an estimated population size of <200 mature individuals. The main threats faced by this population include habitat loss and road mortality. However, on 18 November 2013, a radio-implanted badger was found nonresponsive in an agricultural field with signs consistent with canine distemper virus infection, which was subsequently confirmed. This prompted our investigation into the occurrence of pathogens in this endangered carnivore to better quantify the level

BCG vaccination against tuberculosis in European badgers (Meles meles): a review.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a significant animal health problem in many parts of the world, and reservoirs of infection in wild animals complicate disease control efforts in farmed livestock, particularly cattle. Badgers (Meles meles) are a significant wildlife reservoir of Mycobacterium bovis infection for cattle in the United Kingdom (UK) and Republic of Ireland (ROI). Vaccination of badgers using an M. bovis strain bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine could potentially be an option in the national TB eradication strategy. Wildlife vaccination has been used successfully for other diseases in wildl

Adenovirus surveillance in wild carnivores from Brazil.

Landscape transformation favors the spread of new pathogens that can be shared between domestic and wild animals. Certain adenoviruses (e.g., canine adenovirus 1 and 2, family Adenoviridae) can infect domestic and wild carnivores. In domestic canids, these viruses are associated with hepatic and respiratory diseases (among others). Nevertheless, information regarding adenovirus pathogenicity and molecular features in wild carnivores is still limited. Herein we surveyed adenovirus in free-ranging carnivores from Brazil. Total DNA was extracted from and subsequently tested by a nested panPCR in

Infections of Two Isthmiophora Species (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) in Wild Mammals from Republic of Korea with Their Morphological Descriptions.

Isthmiophora hortensis (Digenea: Echinostomatidae) is a dominant echinostome in animal reservoir hosts and humans in the Republic of Korea (Korea). We intended to investigate the infection status with this echinostome species in the several species of wild animals and describe the morphological characteristics in the faunistic view point. A total of 175 animal carcasses belonging to 3 families, i.e., Canidae, Felidae and Mustelidae, were collected from the southern regions of Korea from March 2010 to July 2017. Isthmiophora spp. worms were recovered from the small intestines of each animal und

Trichinella pseudospiralis an elusive nematode.

Trichinella pseudospiralis is one of the three species whose larvae do not encapsulate after muscle cell differentiation, and the only one infecting both mammals and birds. More than 40 years after its discovery, the epidemiology remains, at least in part, still enigmatic. The aim of this work was to reconsider the current knowledge on the T. pseudospiralis epidemiology by collecting the information available in the literature and in the website of the International Trichinella Reference Center. Over the last decade, there was an increasing number of reports of T. pseudospiralis due to the inc

Adiaspiromycosis due to Emmonsia crescens is widespread in native British mammals.

Adiaspiromycosis caused by Emmonsia crescens is primarily a respiratory disease affecting small mammals, especially members of the Families Rodentia, Carnivora and Mustelidae. Although isolated reports exist of adiaspiromycosis in free-living British wildlife, the extent of infection in wild animals in the UK, and the significance of any associated pathology are unclear. Here, we report the results of histopathological examination of lungs of free-living wild mammals from the south-west UK coupled with digestion of lung material in potassium hydroxide followed by centrifugation and microscopic

Analysis of a multi-type resurgence of Mycobacterium bovis in cattle and badgers in Southwest France, 2007-2019.

Although control measures to tackle bovine tuberculosis (bTB) in cattle have been successful in many parts of Europe, this disease has not been eradicated in areas where Mycobacterium bovis circulates in multi-host systems. Here we analyzed the resurgence of 11 M. bovis genotypes (defined based on spoligotyping and MIRU-VNTR) detected in 141 farms between 2007 and 2019, in an area of Southwestern France where wildlife infection was also detected from 2012 in 65 badgers. We used a spatially-explicit model to reconstruct the simultaneous diffusion of the 11 genotypes in cattle farms and badger p

Uptake of baits by wild badgers: Influences of deployment method, badger age and activity patterns on potential delivery of an oral vaccine.

In parts of the United Kingdom and Ireland, the European badger is a wildlife host for Mycobacterium bovis (the causative agent of bovine tuberculosis). Badger vaccination is one management option for reducing disease spread. Vaccination is currently achieved by parenteral vaccination of captured badgers, but an oral vaccine delivered in a bait may provide an additional approach in the future. We conducted two field experiments in wild badger populations to identify factors that influence uptake (% of individuals with evidence of bait consumption) of candidate oral vaccine baits. In both insta

Simulating partial vaccine protection: BCG in badgers.

In wildlife disease management there are few diseases for which vaccination is a viable option. The human vaccine BCG has been used for the control of bovine tuberculosis in badgers since 2010 and is expected to increase. Understanding the long-term effects of repeated vaccination campaigns on disease prevalence is vital, but modelling thus far has generally assumed that a vaccine provides perfect protection to a proportion of the population, and that animals exposed to a repeated vaccination have a second independent chance of becoming protected. We held a workshop with experts in the field t
