Molecular Characterization and Antibiograms of Nontuberculous Mycobacterium Infections in Kashgar, China.

To investigate the prevalent characteristic of nontuberculous mycobacteria (NTM) isolates in Kashgar. A total of 52 NTM culture-positive isolates were collected in 2020 from Kashgar, China. All strains were confirmed to be NTM species by whole genome sequencing (WGS). Drug susceptibility testing was performed using Sensititre SLOMYCO plates. Of the 52 NTM isolates, 88.46% (46/52) were rapidly growing mycobacteria (RGM). The predominant NTM species were Mycolicibacterium. sp (23.07%, 12/52) and M. elephantis (15.38%, 8/52), followed by Mycobacteroides chelonae (9.61%, 5/52). At least, two suspe

Polypropylene Mesh Infection From Surgical Site Infections Caused by Mycobacterium fortuitum.

This report highlights two cases of surgical site infections (SSIs) caused by Mycobacterium fortuitum (Mf) following abdominal mesh implantation. The first case involved an 83-year-old male experiencing non-healing erythema and wounds post-operation, which persisted despite multiple treatments, until effective management was achieved with targeted antibiotics after Mf identification. The second case concerned a female patient with a gynecological postoperative hernia, where Mf was quickly detected following SSI onset three weeks after surgery. Prompt mesh removal and appropriate antibiotic tre

Dual spatial host-bacterial gene expression in Mycobacterium abscessus respiratory infections.

Co-localization of spatial transcriptome information of host and pathogen can revolutionize our understanding of microbial pathogenesis. Here, we aimed to demonstrate that customized bacterial probes can be successfully used to identify host-pathogen interactions in formalin-fixed-paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissues by probe-based spatial transcriptomics technology. We analyzed the spatial gene expression of bacterial transcripts with the host transcriptomic profile in murine lung tissue chronically infected with Mycobacterium abscessus embedded in agar beads. Customized mycobacterial probes were

Mycobacteriological characteristics and treatment outcomes in extrapulmonary Mycobacterium abscessus complex infections.

OBJECTIVES: The differentiation between Mycobacterium abscessus subspecies abscessus (M. abscessus) and Mycobacterium abscessus subspecies massiliense (M. massiliense) and determination of the presence of inducible resistance to macrolide antibiotics are important factors in the management of patients with Mycobacterium abscessus complex (MABC) infections. Unlike pulmonary MABC infections, little information on extrapulmonary MABC infections is available. METHODS: The molecular identification of clinical isolates was performed, and the clinical characteristics and treatment outcomes of 20 con

Port-site infections by nontuberculous mycobacterium: A retrospective clinico-microbiological study.

BACKGROUND: Port-site infection (PSI) is a prevailing, chronic, nagging, treatment refractory complication of laparoscopic surgery (LS). It neutralizes the advantages of minimally invasive surgery and increases morbidity, treatment cost of patient, leading to loss of confidence on operating surgeon. PSIs are preventable with appropriate preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative measures. Atypical mycobacterium is most commonly associated with nonhealing postlaparoscopic wound infections, causing outbreaks or sporadic cases worldwide. PURPOSE: We retrospectively studied the occurrence of

New genetic biomarkers from transcriptome RNA-sequencing for Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex and Mycobacterium avium complex infections by bioinformatics analysis.

The study aims to accurately identify differentially expressed genes (DEGs) and biological pathways in mycobacterial infections through bioinformatics for deeper disease understanding. Differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was explored by Gene Ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analysis. Unique DEGs were submitted on least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression analysis. 1,057 DEGs from two GSE datasets were identified, which were closely connected with NTM/ latent TB infection (LTBI)/active TB disease (ATB). Disseminated infection by Mycobacterium genavense in an HIV-1 infected patient.

Opportunistic infections are an important cause of death and morbidity among HIV infected patients. Disseminated infections by nontuberculous mycobacteria are a diagnostic to consider among these patients with a high level of immunosuppression. A 64 year old Caucasian man, born in Angola, living in Portugal since 1975, presented in the emergency room with generalized malaise, weight loss, vesperal temperatures of around 37.5 °C with night sweats for two months, and epigastric abdominal pain with liquid stools in the 2 previous weeks. Laboratory study revealed a previously undiagnosed HIV-1 inf

Chronic helminth infection does not exacerbate Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection.

BACKGROUND: Chronic helminth infections induce a Th2 immune shift and establish an immunoregulatory milieu. As both of these responses can suppress Th1 immunity, which is necessary for control of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) infection, we hypothesized that chronic helminth infections may exacerbate the course of MTB. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Co-infection studies were conducted in cotton rats as they are the natural host for the filarial nematode Litomosoides sigmodontis and are an excellent model for human MTB. Immunogical responses, histological studies, and quantitative mycobacte

Spectrum of manifestations of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in primates infected with SIV.

To characterize the manifestations of coinfection with M. tuberculosis and SIV infection, we studied 12 SIV-infected rhesus monkeys, six of which were infected intrabronchially with a low dose of Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv. In the six coinfected animals, M. tuberculosis antigen-stimulated lung and blood cells produced high concentrations of IFN-gamma but not IL-4 8-16 weeks after infection. Of the three coinfected animals with high levels of plasma viremia, two developed disseminated tuberculosis and the other died of bacterial peritonitis. Of three coinfected animals with moderate level

Mycobacterium xenopi infection in patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection.

Mycobacterium xenopi is one of the most frequently isolated nontuberculous mycobacteria in Ontario, Canada. We reviewed the records of 28 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients from whom M. xenopi was isolated between 1982 and 1995. M. xenopi was recovered from respiratory specimens from 24 patients, most of whom had clinical and radiographic evidence of pulmonary disease. However, coexistent pulmonary infection due to other pathogens was found in 17 patients: Pneumocystis carinii (9 patients), cytomegalovirus (5), Haemophilus influenzae (2), Mycobacterium avium complex (2), Stre

Mycobacterium flavescens Infection - An Unusual Case of Prosthetic Joint Infection.

INTRODUCTION: The onset of prosthetic joint infections (PJIs) is characterized by early onset defined as within 90 days of the procedure, delayed onset defined as within 3 to 12 months, and late onset defined as over 12 months. In only a scant number of case reports, Mycobacterium flavescens associated infections are typically found in sputum cultures and associated with various forms of penetrating joint traumas, particularly post-surgical interventions. Due to its rarity in presentation among cases of PJIs, we have presented a case of PJI caused by Mycobacterium flavescens. CASE PRESENTATIO

SIV Infection Facilitates Mycobacterium tuberculosis Infection of Rhesus Macaques.

Tuberculosis (TB) is a common opportunistic infection and the leading cause of death for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. Thus, it is necessary to understand the pathogenetic interactions between M.tb and HIV infection. In this study, we examined M.tb and/or simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection of Chinese rhesus macaques. While there was little evidence that M.tb enhanced SIV infection of macaques, SIV could facilitate M.tb infection as demonstrated by X-rays, pathological and microbiological findings. Chest X-rays showed that co-infected animals had disseminated
