Development of the Interosseous Muscles of the Human Hand: Morphological and Functional Aspects of the Terminal Insertion.

INTRODUCTION: To date, there have been no studies conducted on the development of interosseous muscles (IO) in the human hand. This study aimed to investigate the development of these muscles in order to clarify their terminal insertions and their relationship with the metacarpophalangeal joints. METHODS: Serial sections of 25 human specimens (9 embryos and 16 fetuses) between the 7th and 14th weeks of development, sourced from the Collection of the Department of Anatomy and Embryology at UCM Faculty of Medicine, were analyzed bilaterally using a conventional optical microscope. RESULTS: Our

Neuroanatomical Structures in Human Extraocular Muscles and Their Potential Implication in the Development of Oculomotor Disorders.

The potential role of sensory feedback from human extraocular muscles has been subjected to considerable speculation in the ophthalmic literature. Extraocular muscles pull against a fairly even load and do not initiate a stretch reflex, even when the eyes are directed toward the boundaries of their respective field of action. These unique working conditions and physiological properties have led to the notion that the sensory signal arising from receptors in extraocular muscles differs from the conventional proprioceptive signal arising from their somatic counterparts. The interest in the recep

Enthesitis of the direct tendon of the rectus femoris muscle in a professional volleyball player: A case report.

Enthesitis of the direct tendon of the rectus femoris muscle is a rare pathology which mainly affects professional athletes, and it is caused by overuse and repetitive microtrauma. Athletic jumping and kicking exert a great stress on the direct tendon of the rectus femoris muscle, and volleyball and football players are therefore most frequently affected. Enthesitis may occur suddenly causing pain and functional impairment possibly associated with partial or complete tendon injuries, or it may be a chronic condition causing non-specific clinical symptoms. We present the case of a professional v

Do palisade endings in extraocular muscles arise from neurons in the motor nuclei?

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to localize the cell bodies of palisade endings that are associated with the myotendinous junctions of the extraocular muscles. METHODS: Rhesus monkeys received tract-tracer injections (tetramethylrhodamine dextran [TMR-DA] or choleratoxin subunit B [CTB]) into the oculomotor and trochlear nuclei, which contain the motoneurons of extraocular muscles. All extraocular muscles were processed for the combined immunocytochemical detection of the tracer and SNAP-25 or synaptophysin for the visualization of the complete muscle innervation. RESULTS: In all musc

A unified approach to radial tunnel syndrome and lateral tendinosis.

Two of the most common diagnoses assigned to patients presenting with lateral elbow and proximal forearm pain are lateral tendinosis and radial tunnel syndrome. Traditionally, these 2 conditions have been treated as distinct and separate entities with most patients being diagnosed with either one or the other, but not both. The extensor carpi radialis brevis (ECRB) and, to a lesser the degree, a portion of the extensor digitorum communis that form the conjoined lateral extensor tendon are thought to be primarily responsible for the excessive traction that induces lateral tendinosis (a degenera

The repair capacity spectrum of human skeletal muscle injury from sports to surgical trauma settings.

Skeletal muscle injury and repair have been a major research focus for more than a century. Muscle injuries are defined by their cause and anatomical location and lie on a spectrum in terms of repair outcomes. From contraction-induced necrosis, which initiates regenerative myogenesis for complete restoration of tissue architecture and function to, at the other end of the spectrum, traumatic volumetric muscle loss (VML), where substantial portions (or the whole) of a muscle are lost, leaving the patient with permanent physical disability. Strain injuries are found between these two extremes and

MRI Assessment of Degeneration of the Tendon in Achilles Tendon Ruptures.

BACKGROUND: The extent of tendinosis along the entire tendon in Achilles tendon ruptures (ATRs) has not previously been assessed. MR images of acute ATRs were evaluated to assess this extent, even in areas distant from the rupture. METHODS: Patients who had MR images for an ATR were reviewed. Each tendon was divided into a proximal, middle, and distal segment with the full tendon length defined as the length measured from the myotendinous junction to the insertion. The site of tendon rupture, presence of tendinosis and/or additional tearing, and largest anteroposterior (AP) diameter in the re

Role of Ultrasound in the Detection of Rotator-Cuff Syndrome: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND Physical tests are usually preferred to assess rotator-cuff syndrome but are insufficient to predict the morphology and size of the rotator-cuff. The objective of the study was to rate the ultrasound findings for patients with sudden shoulder pain and to determine potential predictors of the same. MATERIAL AND METHODS A total of 112 patients with sudden shoulder pain with rotator-cuff syndrome, suspected by orthopedic doctors, were subjected to ultrasonography. Real-time ultrasonography was done for the acromioclavicular joint, biceps, infraspinatus, posterior labrum, subscapularis,

Musculotendon variability influences tissue strains experienced by the biceps femoris long head muscle during high-speed running.

The hamstring muscles frequently suffer injury during high-speed running, though the factors that make an individual more susceptible to injury remain poorly understood. The goals of this study were to measure the musculotendon dimensions of the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) muscle, the hamstring muscle injured most often, and to use computational models to assess the influence of variability in the BFlh's dimensions on internal tissue strains during high-speed running. High-resolution magnetic resonance (MR) images were acquired over the thigh in 12 collegiate athletes, and musculotendon di

Xin is a marker of skeletal muscle damage severity in myopathies.

Xin is a striated muscle-specific protein that is localized to the myotendinous junction in skeletal muscle. However, in injured mouse muscle, Xin expression is up-regulated and observed throughout skeletal muscle fibers and within satellite cells. In this study, Xin was analyzed by immunofluorescent staining in skeletal muscle samples from 47 subjects with various forms of myopathy, including muscular dystrophies, inflammatory myopathies, mitochondrial/metabolic myopathy, and endocrine myopathy. Results indicate that Xin immunoreactivity is positively and significantly correlated (rs = 0.6175

Transcriptome profile of subsynaptic myonuclei at the neuromuscular junction in embryogenesis.

Skeletal muscle fiber is a large syncytium with multiple and evenly distributed nuclei. Adult subsynaptic myonuclei beneath the neuromuscular junction (NMJ) express specific genes, the products of which coordinately function in the maintenance of the pre- and post-synaptic regions. However, the gene expression profiles that promote the NMJ formation during embryogenesis remain largely unexplored. We performed single-nucleus RNA sequencing (snRNA-seq) analysis of embryonic and neonatal mouse diaphragms, and found that each myonucleus had a distinct transcriptome pattern during the NMJ formation

Intra- and intermuscular shear wave speed distributions in the human hamstrings during isometric and eccentric contractions.

PURPOSE: Hamstring strain injuries frequently occur near the biceps femoris long head (BFlh) proximal myotendinous junction. Unequal intra- and/or intermuscular mechanical properties may increase injury susceptibility by generating localised gradients in tissue mechanics and strain concentration; however, this remains unexplored under eccentric loading. We examined local shear wave speed (SWS), a measure reflecting tissue stiffness and force transmission, along the BFlh and semitendinosus (ST) during isometric (ISO) and eccentric (ECC) contractions. METHODS: Fifteen healthy males performed IS

Load to Failure and Stiffness of Interference Screw vs Pulvertaft Weave for Distal Fixation in Peroneal Allograft Reconstruction.

BACKGROUND: Allograft reconstruction of the peroneal tendons is an option for treatment of major tears of 1 or both peroneal tendons. No consensus on a superior distal fixation method has been reported. The purpose of the study was to compare load to failure and stiffness of a Pulvertaft weave (PTW) through a residual tendon stump to direct-to-bone interference screw (IS) fixation. METHODS: Fifteen pairs of long leg cadaver specimens were used. All grafts were secured proximally to the peroneus brevis myotendinous junction via a PTW technique. Distally, the tendons were either sutured to the

Development of an Arthroscopic Joint Capsule Injury Model in the Canine Shoulder.

BACKGROUND: The natural history of rotator cuff tears can be unfavorable as patients develop fatty infiltration and muscle atrophy that is often associated with a loss of muscle strength and shoulder function. To facilitate study of possible biologic mechanisms involved in early degenerative changes to rotator cuff muscle and tendon tissues, the objective of this study was to develop a joint capsule injury model in the canine shoulder using arthroscopy. METHODS: Arthroscopic surgical methods for performing a posterior joint capsulectomy in the canine shoulder were first defined in cadavers. S
