Thermal stress differentially regulates eicosanoid and fatty acid metabolism in gills of the blue mussel (Mytilus edulis).

Thermal stress significantly affects bivalve aquaculture by triggering physiological disturbances and high mortality events. The objective of this study was to investigate how acute and repeated thermal stress alters the eicosanoid metabolism and the highly unsaturated fatty acid (HUFA) composition in gill tissues of the blue mussel, Mytilus edulis. Mussels were exposed either to a single acute stress event (temperature raised from 12 °C to 25 °C for 1 h) or repetitive daily stress cycles over one week (daily temperature fluctuations between 12 °C and 25 °C). Using GC-FID and LC-QTOF-MS, fatty

Transcriptional modulation in Mediterranean Mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis following exposure to four pharmaceuticals widely distributed in coastal areas.

Ecotoxicological risk and the mode of action of human drugs on non-target marine animals remain unclear, keeping a gap of knowledge on risks related to ecosystem disruption and chemical contamination of food chains. Understanding these impacts is critical to developing proper waste management practices and regulatory frameworks to prevent long-term environmental and human health problems. This study investigates the impacts of Gemfibrozil, Metformin, Ramipril, and Venlafaxine, individually and combined on Mytilus galloprovincialis over 30 days and assesses persistent effects post-recovery usin

Integrated toxicological assessment of environmental microplastics and diuron on Mytilus galloprovincialis Larvae: Toward improved marine risk management.

Coastal marine ecosystems are increasingly threatened by complex mixtures of emerging and persistent pollutants, including environmental microplastics (EMPs) and the herbicide diuron. These contaminants, frequently detected in coastal waters, can exert harmful effects even at low, environmentally relevant concentrations, particularly during sensitive early life stages of marine invertebrates. Here, we conducted the first investigation of the combined toxicity of EMPs and diuron at realistic exposure levels (100 μg/L EMPs, 50 ng/L diuron, and their mixture), reflecting concentrations commonly f

Toxicity of two drugs towards the marine filter feeder Mytilus spp, using biochemical and shell integrity parameters.

The increasing presence of anthropogenic contaminants in the environment may constitute a challenge to non-target biota, considering that most contaminants can exert deleterious effects. Salicylic acid (SA) is a non-steroid anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) which exerts its activity by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase (COX). Another class of drugs is that of the diuretics, in which acetazolamide (ACZ) is included. This pharmaceutical acts by inhibiting carbonic anhydrase (CA), a key enzyme in acid-base homeostasis, regulation of pH, being also responsible for the bio-availability of Ca2+ for

Assessment of heavy metal and organic contaminants levels along the Libyan coast using transplanted mussels (Mytilus galloprovincialis).

Within the framework of the MYTIOR project in 2009, heavy metals and organic compounds contaminations were assessed in transplanted mussels in 16 different stations along the coasts of Libya. These stations were located at miles offshore industrial/urban sources but in open sea providing original results related to the background contamination rather than linked to a specific coastal source of pollutants. Results indicated mercury (Hg, 0.045-0.066 mg/kg dry weight (dw)), lead (Pb, 0.44-0, 71 mg/kg dw) and copper (Cu, 3.56-4.21 mg/kg dw) were in the same range or at lower value than control for

Biotransformation and toxicity of prometryn in mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis): Carrier effects of polystyrene microplastics on biochemical and histopathological alterations.

Prometryn (PRO) is frequently detected marine contaminant that poses growing threats to aquatic products and human health. While the environmental risks of this pollutant have garnered increased attention, the biochemical and physiological effects of PRO on marine organisms in the presence of microplastics remain poorly understood. In this study, the bioaccumulation and toxicity of PRO in marine blue mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis) at three concentrations, with the presence and absence of polystyrene microplastics (PS), were investigated using a semi-static seawater exposure system. Multi-level biomarker responses in the marine mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed to a mixture of Dexamethasone and Acetylsalicylic Acid.

The increasing prevalence of pharmaceutical residues in coastal ecosystems represents a critical challenge for the health of marine organisms, which are frequently exposed to complex contaminant mixtures. This study investigated the toxicological effects of single and combined exposure to Acetylsalicylic Acid (ASA, 0.1 μg/L) and Dexamethasone (DESA, 4 ng/L) in the marine bivalve Mytilus galloprovincialis over a 14-day period. A multi-tier approach was adopted, integrating transcriptional expression, biochemical markers, and histopathological analysis. Due to the functional relevance of the tar

Cell-cycle genes in the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis are cued by aerial heat stress in a fluctuating tidal environment.

Mytilus galloprovincialis is a sessile, facultative anaerobic mussel inhabiting intertidal zones, where it experiences daily fluctuations in oxygen, temperature, and food availability. These environmental fluctuations require coordinated shifts in metabolism and cellular processes such as the cell cycle. As growth in mussels is environmentally driven, understanding how external perturbations modulate cell-cycle regulation is essential. Despite conserved cell-cycle machinery across eukaryotes, its dynamics in facultative anaerobic marine invertebrates remain largely unexplored. Mussels switch b

Detection and genetic characterization of Toxoplasma gondii in market-sold mussels (Mytilus edulis) in certain provinces of China.

Mussels, randomly collected from fish markets in China, were analyzed by a semi-nested PCR to detect B1 gene of Toxoplasma gondii. Out of the 2215 samples, fifty-five (2.48%) were detected T. gondii-positive. The prevalence in Shandong province, Liaoning province and Zhejiang province were 2.51%, 2.26% and 2.69%, respectively. T. gondii oocysts were more frequently detected in digestive glands (1.04%) and haemolymph (1.49%) when compared with gills (0.23%). Of the 55 positive DNA, only two samples showed complete genotype at 11 locus and were authenticated as ToxoDB Genotype #9. To our knowled

Biochemical characterization of the native α-carbonic anhydrase purified from the mantle of the Mediterranean mussel, Mytilus galloprovincialis.

A α-carbonic anhydrase (CA, EC 4.2.1.1) has been purified and characterized biochemically from the mollusk Mytilus galloprovincialis. As in most mollusks, this α-CA is involved in the biomineralization processes leading to the precipitation of calcium carbonate in the mussel shell. The new enzyme had a molecular weight of 50 kDa, which is roughly two times higher than that of a monomeric α-class enzyme. Thus, Mytilus galloprovincialis α-CA is either a dimer, or similar to the Tridacna gigas CA described earlier, may have two different CA domains in its polypeptide chain. The Mytilus galloprovi

Effect of pollution history on immunological responses and organ histology in the marine mussel Mytilus edulis exposed to cadmium.

The effect of previous toxicant exposure (i.e., exposure history) on an organism's response to re-exposure to the toxicant is of considerable interest. The marine mussel Mytilus edulis was collected from reference and polluted sites in southwest England, and groups of mussels from each site were exposed to 20 μg/L CdCl2 for 0, 1, 4, and 8 days and compared with unexposed controls. End points evaluated were tissue metal and electrolyte concentrations, haemolymph chemistry, haemocyte characteristics [counts, neutral red uptake (NRU), and phagocytosis], histology, and expression of metallothionei

Tissue-Specific Biomarkers and Bioaccumulation in Mytilus galloprovincialis: Seasonal Anthropogenic Stress in the North Ionian Sea (Calabria, Italy).

Coastal ecosystems are increasingly threatened by human activities, highlighting the need for sensitive tools to assess environmental risk. An active biomonitoring approach, using the Mediterranean mussel (Mytilus galloprovincialis), was employed to evaluate anthropogenic chemical contamination in the North Ionian Sea, a still poorly studied area, by comparing mussel health status before (PrePT) and after (PostPT) the peak tourist season. Bioaccumulation of metal(loid)s was quantified in whole organisms. Oxidative stress was assessed in the gills and digestive gland through catalase (CAT), sup

Filtration and respiration responses of mussels (Mytilus edulis) to trematode parasite infections (Renicola roscovita) and transient heat exposure.

The mussel Mytilus edulis, a host to various trematode species, experiences performance decrements due to these infections. Yet, the impact magnitude and potential interactions with environmental stressors remain largely unexplored. This study scrutinizes the effect of Renicola roscovita infections on mussel filtration and respiration. We first assessed performance in both uninfected and lab-infected mussels at a mild temperature (16 °C), following an acute heat ramp to 30.5 °C and subsequent cooling. The experiment revealed neither a significant direct impact of the infection on the mussels'

An integrated metabolomics and proteogenomics approach reveals molecular alterations following carbamazepine exposure in the male mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis.

Carbamazepine is one of the most abundant pharmaceutical active compounds detected in aquatic systems. Based on laboratory exposures, carbamazepine has been proven to adversely affect aquatic organisms. However, the underlying molecular events remain poorly understood. This study aims to investigate the molecular mechanisms potentially associated with toxicological effects of carbamazepine on the mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis exposed for 3 days at realistic concentrations encountered in coastal environments (80 ng/L and 8 μg/L). An integrated metabolomics and proteogenomics approach, includ

Uncovering the Complex Transcriptome Response of Mytilus chilensis against Saxitoxin: Implications of Harmful Algal Blooms on Mussel Populations.

Saxitoxin (STX), a principal phycotoxin contributing to paralytic shellfish poisoning, is largely produced by marine microalgae of the genus Alexandrium. This toxin affects a wide range of species, inducing massive deaths in fish and other marine species. However, marine bivalves can resist and accumulate paralytic shellfish poisons. Despite numerous studies on the impact of STX in marine bivalves, knowledge regarding STX recognition at molecular level by benthic species remains scarce. Therefore, the aim of this study was to identify novel genes that interact with STX in the Chilean mussel My

Surveillance for Toxoplasma gondii in California mussels (Mytilus californianus) reveals transmission of atypical genotypes from land to sea.

Coastal habitat contamination with Toxoplasma gondii is a health risk to humans and marine wildlife, with infections documented in both nearshore and pelagic marine mammals. Due to lack of sensitive methods for detection of T. gondii in water, this study utilized an alternative surveillance approach for evaluating marine habitat contamination using wild mussels. The objectives of this study were to (i) validate sensitive molecular tools for T. gondii detection in mussels and (ii) apply optimized methods in a surveillance study to determine the prevalence and genotype(s) of T. gondii in mussels

Pesticides commonly used in aquaculture: Interactive and repetitive effect of azamethiphos and deltamethrin on the physiology and growth of the mollusc Mytilus chilensis.

The intensive use of antiparasitic pesticides in salmon aquaculture has raised concerns regarding their impacts on non-target marine organisms. In Chile, the organophosphate azamethiphos and the pyrethroid deltamethrin are widely applied to control infestations of the sea louse Caligus rogercresseyi, yet their combined and repetitive effects on ecologically and economically important species remain poorly understood. This study evaluated the physiological and growth responses of juveniles Mytilus chilensis exposed to concentrations of azamethiphos (15 and 100 μg L-1) and deltamethrin (1 and 2

Differential Accumulation and Excretion of Tetrodotoxin and 5,6,11-Trideoxytetrodotoxin in the Mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis Following Ingestion of Toxic Flatworm Larvae.

Tetrodotoxin (TTX), commonly known as pufferfish toxin, is widely distributed among marine organisms. In the past decade, TTX has been detected in edible bivalves along coasts worldwide, raising concerns about unexpected food poisoning. Recent research suggests that planktonic larvae of the TTX-bearing flatworm Planocera multitentaculata are involved in the toxification of bivalves. However, some uncertainties remain: although these flatworms contain large amounts of 5,6,11-trideoxytetrodotoxin (TDT), TDT is generally not detected in bivalves, even when TTX is present. The aim of this study wa
