Amazonian waters harbour an ancient freshwater Ceratomyxa lineage (Cnidaria: Myxosporea).

A new species of Ceratomyxa parasitizing the gall bladder of Cichla monoculus, an endemic cichlid fish from the Amazon basin in Brazil, is described using morphological and molecular data. In the bile, both immature and mature myxospores were found floating freely or inside elongated plasmodia: length 304 (196-402) μm and width 35.7 (18.3-55.1) μm. Mature spores were elongated and only slightly crescent-shaped in frontal view with a prominent sutural line between two valve cells, which had rounded ends. Measurements of formalin-fixed myxospores: length 6.3±0.6 (5.1-7.5) μm, thickness 41.2±2.9

Morphological and molecular-genetic characterization of Chloromyxum trilineatum n. sp. (Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) in the gall bladder of pale chub (Zacco platypus) in Japan.

The genus Chloromyxum (Myxozoa: Myxosporea: Bivalvulida) is defined as having ridged or smooth bivalvular myxospores containing four polar capsules, with/without caudal filaments. Currently containing more than 140 nominal species, this genus is reasonably speciose with myxospores of unique but heterogeneous morphology. Recent phylogenetic studies have demonstrated its polyphyletic nature. During our myxosporean survey of freshwater fish, a new coelozoic myxosporean species, Chloromyxum trilineatum n. sp., was detected in the gall bladder of the pale chub, Zacco platypus (Cypriniformes: Cyprin

Proliferative Kidney Disease and Viral Pathogens in Wild Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) Populations in the Czech Republic.

Populations of wild brown trout (Salmo trutta) have been in long-term decline across Central Europe, including the Czech Republic, with multiple factors, such as habitat alteration, climate change, predation and emerging diseases, implicated. Among the diseases, proliferative kidney disease (PKD), caused by the myxozoan Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae, has gained increasing attention. Between 2020 and 2024, we investigated the occurrence of T. bryosalmonae and selected viral pathogens in wild brown trout populations from 34 streams (51 sites) across the three major Czech river basins (Elbe, Mora

Coinfection of large yellow croaker Larimichthys crocea by Trypanosoma sp. (Euglenozoa: Kinetoplastea) and Ceratomyxa xiangshanensis n. sp. (Cnidaria: Myxosporea) in offshore net cage systems in the East China Sea.

The large yellow croaker, Larimichthys crocea, is an indigenous fish in the East China Sea and a highly ranked marine fish species, primarily reared in the coastal waters of the East China Sea. Recently, infections with hemoflagellates (causing trypanosomiasis) in this fish species were detected on the southeast coast of China; however, the pathogenicity has not been established. Here, an outbreak of mass mortality in L. crocea farmed in Zhejiang province is reported with coinfection of hemoflagellates and myxosporeans. For hemoflagellates, blood smears reveal elongated trypomastigotes measure

Spleen as an Alternative Tissue for Estimating Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae Load, Prevalence and Its Relationship With Proliferative Kidney Disease in Brown Trout.

Accurate pathogen detection is essential in fish health management and disease prevention. Pathogens often target different host tissues, and monitoring alternative target organs can provide important insights into disease progression. We evaluated the spleen as an alternative to the kidney for estimating the load and prevalence of the myxozoan parasite Tetracapsuloides bryosalmonae (Tb) and its relationships with proliferative kidney disease (PKD) in juvenile brown trout. We sampled 238 brown trout across nine rivers and quantified parasite load in both tissues using qPCR. Parasite load showe

To React or Not to React: The Dilemma of Fish Immune Systems Facing Myxozoan Infections.

Myxozoans are microscopic, metazoan, obligate parasites, belonging to the phylum Cnidaria. In contrast to the free-living lifestyle of most members of this taxon, myxozoans have complex life cycles alternating between vertebrate and invertebrate hosts. Vertebrate hosts are primarily fish, although they are also reported from amphibians, reptiles, trematodes, mollusks, birds and mammals. Invertebrate hosts include annelids and bryozoans. Most myxozoans are not overtly pathogenic to fish hosts, but some are responsible for severe economic losses in fisheries and aquaculture. In both scenarios, t
