BACKGROUND: Pinworms are the most common helminth infection in the USA and Western Europe, with prevalence rates in some communities of as high as 30-50%. Pinworms generally live in the gastrointestinal tract, and helminth infestations have been noted in over one-quarter of acute appendectomies on histologic examination.
RESULTS & CONCLUSIONS: Although transmission is often attributed to the ingestion of infective eggs by nail biting and inadequate hand washing, inhalation and ingestion of airborne eggs also occur. The female Enterobius vermicularis migrates nightly to the perianal area to de

BACKGROUND: Rhinotillexomania is a recent term coined to describe compulsive nose picking. There is little world literature on nose-picking behavior in the general population.
METHOD: We studied nose-picking behavior in a sample of 200 adolescents from 4 urban schools.
RESULTS: Almost the entire sample admitted to nose picking, with a median frequency of 4 times per day; the frequency was > 20 times per day in 7.6% of the sample. Nearly 17% of subjects considered that they had a serious nose-picking problem. Other somatic habits such as nail biting, scratching in a specific spot, or pulling

Low central nervous system (CNS) serotonin levels have been associated with impulsive, aggressive and self-injurious behavior (SIB). Persons with Prader-Willi Syndrome (PWS) often engage in self-injury by severe compulsive skin picking and gouging and often manifest compulsive eating, hoarding, and explosive outbursts. Some of the compulsive behaviors seen in patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) bear similarity to behaviors associated with PWS: Skin picking, trichotillomania, and onychophagia (nail biting). There is abundant evidence that selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (S

Sixty two inmates of a children's home of Lucknow City were examined by using Hindi Adaptation of Stanford Binet Intelligence Scale-Form LM (1960) and a five point rating scale for aggression. A high proportion (69.4%) of the inmates had one or other psychiatric problem. Mild mental retardation (I.Q. 50-70) was most common (41.9%). Intellectual level was correlated with present age, duration of stay and age at entry. Significant correlation was found between Intellectual level and present age, as well as duration of stay. Nearly 39% inmates showed aggressive behaviour. Aggressive behaviour was

[Purpose] To assess the association between the oclusal characteristics, headache, parafunctional habits and clicking sounds and signs/symptoms of TMD in adolescents. [Subjects] Adolescents between 14 and 18 years of age. [Methods] The participants were evaluated using the Helkimo Index and a clinical examination to track clicking sounds, parafunctional habits and other signs/symptoms of temporomandibular disorder (TMD). Subjects were classified according to the presence or absence of headache, type of occlusion, facial pattern and type of bite. In statistical analyse we used the chi-square te

Onycophagia, or nail-biting, is common in adults and children, but self-mutilating onycophagia is almost exclusively associated with nerve injury and psychiatric comorbidities, and may lead to osteomyelitis and flexor tenosynovitis. Cases with autophagy or autocannabalistic components are extremely rare, as are cases requiring proximal amputation. Behavioral interventions are rarely successful, but the literature supports psychiatric medication to decrease the onycophagic impulse. We therefore present a 70-year-old male with history of severe onycophagia, diabetic neuropathy, and vascular dise

A 7-month-old female child born to nonconsanguineous parents with a history of global developmental delay, since early infancy had reported to the department with facial features of mild dysmorphism. History of finger sucking and finger biting was evident, as there was a massive scab tissue over the dorsal aspect of the index finger, above the finger nail bed. A huge ulcer was evident on the right side of the dorsal aspect of anterior two-thirds of the tongue. Genetic evaluation through targeted gene sequencing confirmed the diagnosis as hereditary sensory, autonomic neuropathy Type VIII (Onli

Different types of self-injury have been classified as reflecting impulsive and compulsive characteristics (article by Simeon and Favazza [Self-injurious Behaviors: Assessment and Treatment {pp 1-28}. Washington, DC: American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc, 2001]). The current research used a prospective design to evaluate whether there is a progression between these different types of self-injurious behaviors (SIB) over time. Support was found for a progression from compulsive SIB (including hair pulling, nail-biting, skin picking, scratching, and preventing wounds from healing) to impulsive SIB

N-acetyl-cysteine, N-acetylcysteine, N-acetyl cysteine, and N-acetyl-L-cysteine are all designations for the same compound, which is abbreviated as NAC. NAC is a precursor to the amino acid cysteine, which ultimately plays two key metabolic roles. Through its metabolic contribution to glutathione production, cysteine participates in the general antioxidant activities of the body. Through its role as a modulator of the glutamatergic system, cysteine influences the reward-reinforcement pathway. Because of these functions, NAC may exert a therapeutic effect on psychiatric disorders allegedly rela

Pathological skin picking (PSP) is a disabling disorder characterized by repetitive picking of the skin that causes tissue damage. Estimated to affect 2% to 5.4% of the population, PSP is currently listed as an impulse control disorder not otherwise specified. However, the repetitive and compulsive behaviors seen in PSP are phenomenologically and clinically similar to the behaviors seen in obsessive-compulsive disorder and other body-focused repetitive behaviors, such as trichotillomania and pathological nail biting. Animal neuroimaging research in related disorders such as obsessive-compulsiv

OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to assess the prevalence of obsessive-compulsive symptoms in a population of Italian adolescents.
METHOD: A sample of 2877 high-school students, 1463 males (51%) and 1414 females (49%), aged 16-21 years were assessed with the Leyton Obsessional Inventory--Child Version (LOI-CV). Two groups of subjects were defined as 'positive' on the screen: the high interference (HI) (i.e. all subjects who scored 25 or more in the interference score), and the supernormals (Sn).
RESULTS: Females scored higher than males both on yes and interference scores. One hundred an

Twenty-four cases of trichotillomania attending psychiatry outpatient department and child guidance clinic at Kalawati Saran Children's and Smt Sucheta Kriplani Hospitals over a period of 2 years from July, 1985 to November 1987 were studied. Females (66.7%) outnumbered the males (33.3%). Majority of cases belonged to age group 6-10 years (54.2%) and nuclear family (68.5%). Nail-biting (25.0%) was the commonest associated neurotic trait, followed by enuresis (20.9%), temper-tantrum (12.5%), etc. A past history of hysterical fits and neurotic depression was found in 3 cases (12.5%) and 2 cases

We have observed mutilative self-biting leading to multiple finger amputations in two patients following C4 complete spinal cord injury (SCI). Both men were of normal intelligence without psychosis and each had a neurotic personality and history of fingernail biting. They related the self-biting to anxiety and depression. We believe these to be the first English language reports of multiple finger amputations due to self-biting following SCI.

Treatment of acute injuries of the hand Abstract. Injuries to the hand are a common presentation in primary care units. When accurately assessed, many open injuries may be handled in the emergency department without referral to a hand surgery specialist. We would like to give some recommendations on how to treat the most frequent injuries like lesions to the nail and nailbed, fingertip amputation as well as burns, infections and bites. But first, we highlight the different methods of local anesthesia and discuss the use of a tourniquet or vasoconstriction with adrenalin - WALANT - instead.

Trauma to the nail unit is one of the most common causes of onychodystrophy and may be acute (a single overwhelming injury) or chronic (repeated minor injury). Immediate effects of acute trauma include splinter hemorrhages, subungual hematomas, and nail shedding. Delayed deformities include splits and ridges, pterygium, hook nails, pigment bands, and ectopic nail. Also discussed are the results of chronic trauma, including self-inflicted injury and repeated indirect injury.

Body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) include skin picking, trichotillomania, nail biting and cavitadaxia/lip-cheek biting, among other behaviors. For the first time, we compared three different self-help techniques aimed at reducing BFRBs. We explored the acceptance and preliminary efficacy of the approaches and whether the techniques exerted differential effects depending on BFRB-type.A total of 113 participants with at least one BFRB were randomly allocated to either habit reversal training (HRT; active elements: awareness and competing response training), decoupling (DC) or decoupling

INTRODUCTION: Fractures have been described mainly following falling accidents in horse-related injuries. Horse bites are uncommon accidents. We present a case of open fracture of the forearm due to horse bite.
CASE REPORT: A 35-year-old male farm-worker presented to the emergency room with alleged history of horse bite to the right forearm about 2 hours prior to presentation while feeding the horse. There was deformity of the forearm with multiple puncture wounds, deep abrasions and small lacerations on the distal-third of the forearm. Copious irrigation with normal saline was done and he wa

BACKGROUND: Self-induced nail disorders (SINDs) are a subset of body-focused repetitive behaviors (BFRBs) characterized by pathological grooming habits that damage the nail and periungual structures. These disorders were classified into subgroups based on the specific methods individuals use to harm their nails. Despite their prevalence and potential psychological impact, limited data exist. This study aims to investigate the demographic and clinical characteristics of SINDs.
METHODS: This multicenter prospective cohort study included 675 patients diagnosed with SINDs at dermatology outpatien
