Micro- and nanotechnology for neural electrode-tissue interfaces.

Implantable neural electrodes can record and regulate neural activities with high spatial resolution of single-neuron and high time resolution of sub-millisecond, which are the most extensive window in neuroscience research. However, the mechanical mismatch between conventional stiff electrodes and soft neural tissue can lead to inflammatory responses and degradation of signals in chronic recordings. Although remarkable breakthroughs have been made in sensing and regulation of neural signals, the long-term stability and chronic inflammatory response of the neural electrode-tissue interfaces st

Deep vein thrombosis: current status and nanotechnology advances.

Deep vein thrombosis (DVT) affects up to 2 million people in the United States, and worldwide incidence is 70 to 113 cases per 100,000 per year. Mortality from DVT is often due to subsequent pulmonary embolism (PE). Precise diagnosis and treatment is thereby essential for the management of DVT. DVT is diagnosed by a thorough history and physical examination followed by laboratory and diagnostic tests. The choice of laboratory and diagnostic test is dependent on clinical pretest probability. Available laboratory and diagnostic techniques mainly involve D-dimer test, ultrasound, venography, and

Made-to-order nanocarbons through deterministic plasma nanotechnology.

Through a combinatorial approach involving experimental measurement and plasma modelling, it is shown that a high degree of control over diamond-like nanocarbon film sp3/sp2 ratio (and hence film properties) may be exercised, starting at the level of electrons (through modification of the plasma electron energy distribution function). Hydrogenated amorphous carbon nanoparticle films with high percentages of diamond-like bonds are grown using a middle-frequency (2 MHz) inductively coupled Ar+CH4 plasma. The sp3 fractions measured by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Raman spectroscopy

Weave tile architecture construction strategy for DNA nanotechnology.

Architectural designs for DNA nanostructures typically fall within one of two broad categories: tile-based designs (assembled from chemically synthesized oligonucleotides) and origami designs (woven structures employing a biological scaffold strand and synthetic staple strands). Both previous designs typically contain many Holliday-type multi-arm junctions. Here we describe the design, implementation, and testing of a unique architectural strategy incorporating some aspects of each of the two previous design categories but without multi-arm junction motifs. Goals for the new design were to use

Biomimetic nanovesicles and nanotechnology for oral and maxillofacial diseases.

Oral and maxillofacial diseases, such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and tissue defects, demonstrate limited therapeutic effect due to the oral cavity's complex microecological environment, intractable chronic inflammation, and the challenge of regenerating dental and periodontal tissues. Biomimetic nanovesicles (BNVs), including extracellular vesicles (EVs) and artificial nanovesicles (ANVs), play a beneficial therapeutic role in these diseases. BNVs are capable of delivering a variety of therapeutic agents, including RNAs, proteins, drugs, and nanoparticles, with their efficiency, sp

Acidosis and the role of nanotechnology in mitigating cancer progression.

Far from being a mere epiphenomenon, acidosis is a pivotal factor in the somatic evolution of cancer and its progression toward malignancy. This review provides an inclusive overview of the mechanisms by which acidosis induces and selects for malignant phenotypes. We analyze enhanced invasion and metastasis, chemoresistance, immune surveillance suppression, and metabolic reprogramming. We also briefly examine the clinical development of small-molecule and antibody-based therapies targeting pH regulation. Furthermore, this review outlines various drug delivery and therapeutic systems that respo

Less Is More: Developments in Nanotechnology for Antirestenosis Therapies.

Despite recent advancements in vascular disease treatments, thrombosis and poor long-term vessel patency remain significant barriers to effective endovascular intervention. Current balloon angioplasty and stenting techniques effectively restore acute blood flow in occluded vessels but have persistent limitations. Damage to the arterial endothelium caused by injury during catheter tracking triggers neointimal hyperplasia and the release of proinflammatory factors leading to increased risk of thrombosis and restenosis. Antirestenotic agents commonly delivered on angioplasty balloons and stents h
