Humanising medicine: teaching on tri-morbidity using expert patient narratives in medical education.

Expert patients have recognised benefits for both students and patients in medical education. However, marginalised patients such as homeless patients are less likely to participate. Learning from such individuals is crucial for future doctors, who can, in turn, aid their inclusion in society and improve access to health care. A 'humanising medicine' lecture was delivered to Year Four medical students at Norwich Medical School. The lecture utilised narratives from patients with experience of homelessness and tri-morbidity (physical and mental health problems and substance abuse). We used a qua

Multimodal artificial intelligence in urologic precision oncology: from algorithm to translational medicine (a systemized narrative review).

Precision oncology in urology increasingly depends on integrating heterogeneous data, including multiparametric imaging, histopathology, genomics, and clinical variables. Multimodal artificial intelligence (AI) offers a unified framework to manage this complexity, supporting refined risk stratification, personalized treatment decisions, and informed patient counseling. This narrative review examines applications of multimodal AI in prostate, bladder, and kidney cancers. Beyond listing individual tools, we emphasize how synergistic data fusion enhances the validation of diagnostic and prognosti

Epitranscriptomic and immunometabolic mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine in metabolic-associated cognitive impairment: a narrative review.

Metabolic-associated cognitive impairment (MACI) is a major complication of metabolic disorders such as obesity, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). It manifests as impairments in learning, memory, and executive function, with pathogenesis involving insulin resistance, chronic low-grade inflammation, immune–metabolic imbalance, synaptic plasticity deficits, and aberrant epitranscriptomic regulation. In recent years, traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), with its multi-component and multi-target characteristics, has demonstrated u

Efficacy of complementary medicine for nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced small intestinal injuries: A narrative review.

Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug-induced small bowel injuries (NSIs) have been largely ignored for decades due to the focus on nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug gastropathy. With the visualization of the small intestines enabled by video capsule endoscopy, the frequency and severity of NSIs have become more evident. NSIs have a complex pathophysiology, and no effective preventive or treatment options have been proven. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) has been used to treat disorders of the small intestine, and more research on its effectiveness for NSIs has been conducted. We r

Narrative medicine applications for patient identity and quality of life in ventricular assist device (VAD) patients.

Patients with advanced heart failure may experience a variety of challenges to their self-identity and quality of life due to their heart condition and treatment by implantation of a ventricular assist device (VAD). These challenges include loss of energy and stamina, loss of independence and autonomy, dependence on loved ones and caregivers for help, strained relationships with family and friends, and uncertainty about treatment outcomes and time of recovery. Narrative Medicine (NM) sessions may help patients to reflect on their situation, rediscover identity, and engage sources of meaning by

"Name it to tame it": piloting a narrative medicine clinical intervention for adolescents and young adults with anorexia nervosa.

PURPOSE: Anorexia nervosa (AN) is highly morbid, particularly in adolescence. Narrative-based interventions, which employ storytelling and self-reflection, have improved outcomes for patients with various conditions, but narrative medicine specifically has not been studied in adolescents with AN. This study piloted and evaluated a narrative medicine clinical intervention for adolescents and young adults (AYAs) with AN in an outpatient setting. METHODS: Participants (ages 16-25), stable for outpatient care and in therapy for AN, were recruited through eating disorder clinics and community refe

The role of complementary medicine in the holistic, patient-centered recovery from anorexia nervosa - a narrative review.

Anorexia nervosa (AN) can be a severe psychiatric disorder associated with one of the highest mortality rates among mental health conditions. AN treatment demands a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach. However, conventional therapies often fall short in addressing the full biopsychosocial complexity of the illness. This narrative review explores the emerging role of complementary medicine (CM) in the management of AN, emphasizing its scientific rationale, clinical applications, and relevance within integrative care models. By synthesizing findings from current literature, the review exam

Definition of chronic postsurgical pain in the ICD-11: a narrative review of implications for anaesthesiology and pain medicine.

Chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) is associated with reduced health-related quality of life and disability. In some patients, it can result in long-term opioid use even after minor surgery. Epidemiological studies have reported highly varying rates of CPSP, largely because researchers have used different definitions with self-defined cut-offs for pain scores. With the introduction of the 11th revision of the World Health Organisation International Classification of Diseases and Related Health Problems (ICD-11), chronic pain is now recognised as an entity of its own, its biopsychosocial nature i

Exercise as Medicine Could Be a Chance for Early Detection and Prevention of Cardiotoxicity in Cancer Treatments: A Narrative Review.

BACKGROUND: For cancer patients, cardiovascular complications as a consequence of certain oncological therapies are the leading cause of death, apart from the cancer itself. Currently, there are no uniform guidelines for detecting subclinical cardiotoxicity. Hence, the identification of cardiotoxicity arises late in the course of myocardial dysfunction after cardiac damage has occurred already. Early detection, prevention, and treatment of these cardiotoxic effects remain a challenge; therefore, supportive strategies such as physical activity gain in importance. SUMMARY: Exercise therapy, dur

Facial Clefts and the Trigeminal Nerve: A Narrative Review of the Literature and Clinical Considerations in the Era of Personalized Medicine.

Background Facial clefts are rare congenital malformations, occurring in approximately 1 in 700 live births for cleft lip and palate and fewer than 1 in 100,000 for atypical Tessier clefts. They pose significant diagnostic and surgical challenges. While genetic, vascular, and environmental factors are well documented, growing embryological evidence suggests that the trigeminal nerve may also contribute to craniofacial development. This narrative review explores the association between trigeminal nerve development and facial clefts, aiming to provide a neurodevelopmental perspective with clinic

The role of narrative medicine in the management of joint hypermobility syndrome/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, hypermobility type.

Joint hypermobility syndrome/Ehlers-Danlos syndrome hypermobility type (JHS/EDS-HT) is a hereditary connective tissue disorder affecting every bodily system. It is largely underdiagnosed by many practitioners, with the result of a considerable delay in diagnosis and, consequently, in the onset of adequate management schedule and treatment. Patients may also experience to be misbelieved, erroneously considered affected by a psychiatric or psychosomatic disorders, and rejected by the medical profession, which can lead to feelings of anger and resentment. Patient journeys are often long and compl

A narrative review of non-operative treatment, especially traditional Chinese medicine therapy, for lumbar intervertebral disc herniation.

Lumbar intervertebral disc herniation (LIDH), as the main contributor to low back pain and sciatica, imposes a heavy burden on both the individual and society. Non-operative treatment or conservative treatment has proven effective in alleviation of the symptoms of LIDH and are considered to be a first-line choice for most cases. Active lifestyle, physical therapy, complementary and alternative medicine therapy or Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) therapy, and pharmacotherapy are routinely used as effective non-operative treatment for LIDH patients. However, how to choose one or several conser
