Absent nasal bone at 11-14 weeks of gestation and chromosomal defects.

OBJECTIVE: To examine the association between absence of the nasal bone at the 11-14-week ultrasound scan and chromosomal defects. METHODS: Ultrasound examination was carried out in 3829 fetuses at 11-14 weeks' gestation immediately before fetal karyotyping. At the scan the fetal crown-rump length (CRL) and nuchal translucency (NT) thickness were measured and the fetal profile was examined for the presence or absence of the nasal bone. Maternal characteristics including ethnic origin were also recorded. RESULTS: The fetal profile was successfully examined in 3788 (98.9%) cases. In 3358/3788

Evaluation of the impact of calcitonin nasal spray on bone density: A literature review.

There is inadequate evidence-based literature for clinicians supporting the role of adjuvant rehabilitation options in cases of bone deficient pathologies, and fractures. A literature search was done from e-resources such as DELNET, J-gate, Scopus, Web of Science, EBSCO & PubMed from 18 May 2000 to 28 August 2024. The search was performed through the student's corner at our university with keywords such as bone density, calcitonin, calcitonin nasal spray, fractures, and pathology. Thirteen studies were included following the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The reviews emphasized that skeleta

Transformation of the maxillary bone in adults with nasal polyposis: a CT morphometric study.

PURPOSE: Nasal polyposis (NP) in adult population is a common problem in otorhinolaryngology outpatient practice. Computed tomography (CT) is the ideal imaging method to investigate paranasal sinus diseases. There is yet no study in the literature measuring the morphometry of maxillary bone in NP. The objectives of this study are to correlate the airway variables obtained by CT findings of both chronic nasal airway obstruction and control group in an adult population, and to investigate whether the bony structure of the airway is affected or not. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Forty NP cases that wer

Fish bones in the vallecula and tongue base: removal with the rigid nasal endoscope.

The tongue base and vallecula are common anatomical sites for impaction of inadvertently swallowed fish bones. Many techniques for their removal have been described but this apparently simple procedure can still pose a surgical challenge. We describe a previously unreported technique using rigid endoscopy with the 4 mm 30 degree Hopkins' rod as a visual aid for transoral removal of the impacted bone. The technique has proved to be very well tolerated by the patient and more acceptable in terms of morbidity, time and resources than either flexible endoscopy or rigid endoscopy under general anae

Clinical anatomy of the nasal process of the frontal bone (spina nasalis interna).

OBJECTIVES: During endonasal frontal sinusotomy with the sharp spoon, a solid piece of bone is frequently encountered anterior to the neo-ostium. This bone may be referred to as the nasal process of the frontal bone or internal nasal spine (spina nasalis interna). A prominent spina may render an extended sinusotomy difficult and may call for use of the drill. A series of anatomic measurements is presented to illustrate the 3-dimensional anatomy of the spina nasalis and the regional anatomy. METHODS: A maximum endonasal frontal sinusotomy (Draf type I-II procedure, nasofrontal approach type II

Management of Frontal Bone Exposure Following Paramedian Forehead Flap for Nasal Reconstruction.

The paramedian forehead flap is renowned for its versatility and can cover a wide range of nasal defect sizes. Most of the literature discussing outcomes of paramedian forehead flap reconstructions focuses on morbidity at the recipient site. Frontal bone exposure resulting from the use of the paramedian forehead flap is a rare but possible complication, especially when periosteum overlying the bone is damaged during surgery or during healing by secondary intention due to desiccation. In this case, a 53-year-old female underwent nasal reconstruction with a paramedian forehead flap for an extens

Factors related to successful closed nasal bone reduction: a longitudinal cohort study.

Fracture of the nasal bone is the most common facial fracture because the nose is the most protruding part of the facial skeleton. Standard treatment is nasal reduction, which may cause patients significant pain and stress. Closed nasal reduction may be unsuccessful because of old fractures, despite physical examination being compatible with a new fracture. This study aimed to investigate factors influencing the success of closed nasal reduction. A total of 80 patients with isolated nasal bone fractures who opted for closed reduction under local anaesthesia were included. Demographic features,

Cephalometric long-term follow-up of nasal augmentation using iliac bone graft.

INTRODUCTION: Iliac bone grafts for nasal augmentation are characterized by resorption. In this article, the relationship between graft resorption and soft tissue retrusion is examined by cephalogram-based measurements. METHODS: Ten patients with nasal deformity underwent iliac bone grafts to the nose and were monitored using cephalograms at intervals. On every image, three distances were measured; the tip height and the upper and lower lengths of the graft. RESULTS: The upper length of the grafted bone reached 90% stability after 6 months, and the lower length reached 70% stability between

Effectiveness of out-fracture of the inferior turbinate with reduction nasal bone fracture.

BACKGROUND: The nasal bone, being the most protruding bone in the center of the facial bones, is particularly susceptible to damage. Nasal bone fractures can often result in secondary deformation and dysfunction of the nose, including septal fractures. Studies on functional or intra-nasal complications have been rarely reported after nasal bone fracture reduction. AIM: To evaluate the severity of nasal obstruction and its improvement following nasal bone fracture reduction using inferior turbinoplasty. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective review of data from 50 patients with symptomatic nas
