Anatomy and Imaging of the Nasopharynx, Oropharynx, and Oral Cavity.

Owing to the complex anatomy, the appropriate selection of imaging modalities and interpretation of the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and oral cavity demand a comprehensive knowledge of the anatomic relationships within and among these regions, common pathologies, and interpretative nuances critical for treatment planning. This article outlines the crucial anatomy on multimodality cross-sectional imaging, anatomic relationships that frame various pathologies of the region, and the associated anatomically grounded considerations essential for treatment planning.

[Prolonged epistaxis symptom of nasopharynx carcinoma in a child].

This case report presents a ten-year-old boy with recurrent nosebleeds (epistaxis) over an extended period. In addition, he showed signs of slowed weight gain and developed symptoms such as snoring and sweating during sleep. Rhinoscopy revealed a mass in the nasopharynx, and further tests confirmed the presence of an Epstein-Barr Virus-positive nasopharyngeal carcinoma. After several rounds of chemo-, proton-, and immunomodulating therapy, the boy has recovered and is now in good health. This case highlights the importance of a thorough examination when epistaxis is accompanied by other risk f

Surprise Egg in the Nasopharynx: Basal Cell Adenocarcinoma.

Basal cell adenocarcinoma is a rare salivary gland neoplasm. It is most commonly seen in the parotid gland, and its involvement in the minor salivary glands or upper respiratory tract is very rare. Surgical excision and/or radiotherapy are the mainstay treatment modalities. The nasopharynx is an unusual location for salivary gland basal cell adenocarcinoma. In this case report, the nasopharyngeal punch biopsy of a 60-year-old male patient was reported as salivary gland adenoma, but the final pathological diagnosis was changed to basal cell adenocarcinoma after endoscopic nasopharyngectomy. The

Primary Olfactory Neuroblastoma of the Nasopharynx: A Case Report.

Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is an ectodermal malignant tumor originating from the olfactory nerve epithelium of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus. Olfactory neuroblastoma is a rare cancer, with an estimated incidence of 0.4 per million. Olfactory neuroblastoma often occurs in the top of the nasal cavity or near the lateral wall of the middle turbinate, which accounts for approximately 3% to 5% of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus tumors. Olfactory neuroblastoma primarily in the nasopharynx is rare and tends to be misdiagnosed as nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Herein, we presented a case of

An Unusual Case of Extensive Cavernous Hemangioma of the Nasopharynx.

INTRODUCTION: Giant cavernous hemangioma involving the nose extending to the nasopharynx and oropharynx with complete obstruction of the airway is very unusual and is yet to be described in the literature. In the present case, we have described a giant cavernous hemangioma successfully managed with endoscopic excision. CASE REPORT: A 38-year-old male patient presented with recurrent nasal bleeding for 24 months and progressive obstruction of the right nasal cavity for 8 months. Diagnostic nasal endoscopy showed a greyish mass filling the whole of the right nasal cavity and contrast-enhanced C

Nasopharynx Hairy Polyp as a Cause of Stridor in Newborn.

Hairy polyps are histological benign lesions derived from 2 germinal layers which arise during fetal period, they can occur anywhere in the body. When they are localized in the oropharynx or nasopharynx can lead to upper airway obstruction in infants. We describe a case of a 2-days-old full-term female with intermittent upper airway obstruction, stridor, and feeding difficulty. Endoscopic and radiologic exams show a mass localized in nasopharynx, which was excised with a transnasal endoscopic approach resolving her respiratory difficulties.Histology confirmed the diagnosis of hairy polyp, a mas

Masses of the Nose, Nasal Cavity, and Nasopharynx in Children.

A wide range of masses develop in the nose, nasal cavity, and nasopharynx in children. These lesions may arise from the nasal ala or other structures of the nose, including the mucosa covering any surface of the nasal cavity, the cartilaginous or osseous portion of the nasal septum, the nasal turbinates, and the nasal bones. Lesions may also arise from the nasopharynx or adjacent structures and involve the nose by way of direct extension. The causes of nasal masses in children include congenital and developmental disorders such as congenital nasolacrimal duct mucocele, dermoid cyst, cephalocel

Giant Haemangioma Of Nasopharynx: A Rare Case Outcome.

A 60-year-old female presented to us with a 5-year history of progressive right sided nasal obstruction and recurrent epistaxis. On examination lesion was seen in the right nostril which was firm and bled on probing. CT-scan paranasal sinuses showed a right sided lesion of nose and naso-pharnyx obstructing posterior nasal choanae. Dimensions were reported to be 9×4.1×3.8 cm. A punch biopsy was taken in operating room under general anaesthesia which resulted in profuse bleeding. Suction cautery was used to control bleeding and the nose was packed. The mass was firm to hard and provided resistan

Angiofibroma Originating outside the Nasopharynx: A Management Dilemma.

Background. Angiofibroma is a benign tumor, consisting of fibrous tissue with varying degrees of vascularity, characterized by proliferation of stellate and spindle cells around the blood vessels. It most commonly arises from the nasopharynx, although it may rarely arise in extranasopharyngeal sites. Case Report. A 46-year-old male presented with left side nasal obstruction and epistaxis for one month. Clinical nasal examination revealed left sided polypoidal mass arising from the vestibular region of the lateral nasal wall. Results. CT scan and MRI showed highly vascular soft tissue mass occu

Primary tuberculosis of nasopharynx (adenoid)- a rare presentation.

Tuberculosis has global presence and no part of human body is immune to it, most frequent site beings lungs. Nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare type of extrapulmonary tuberculosis comprising only less than 1% of tuberculosis found in the upper respiratory tract. The authors are presenting here a case of primary tuberculousis affecting the nasopharynx (adenoids) which is one of the rare differential diagnosis of nasopharyngeal mass. Isolated nasopharyngeal tuberculosis is a rare condition even in the endemic areas. In literature there are varied clinical presentations of nasopharyngeal tuber

Dermoid of the nasopharynx causing neonatal respiratory distress.

The dermoid is a rare and benign malformation of bigerminal origin. It is seen frequently in the neonatal period, and the clinical presentation depends on the site and on the size of the lesion, and the classical clinical picture is of a tumor derived from the naso- or oropharynx, leading to respiratory distress and/or feeding disorders. A female newborn was born cyanotic requiring intubation. The oroscopy revealed a large smooth mass. Transoral surgery was performed with successful extubation. Seven months after, there are no signs of recurrence of the lesion. This report adds another case of

Endoscopic endonasal anatomy of the nasopharynx in a cadaver model.

BACKGROUND: Nasopharyngectomy is an accepted treatment for recurrent nasopharyngeal carcinoma following radiation with or without chemotherapy. Traditionally, the nasopharynx has been approached through relatively invasive "open" techniques including transpalatal, maxillary swing, and trans-mandibular-pterygoid approaches. Contemporary management has included the use of endoscopic techniques to exenterate tumors in this location. The purpose of the present study is to describe the endoscopic anatomy of this region through cadaveric dissection and to characterize the technical limitations of th

Human bocavirus in the nasopharynx of otitis-prone children.

OBJECTIVES: Human bocavirus (HBoV) is frequently identified in children with respiratory tract infections, and its role in acute otitis media (AOM) has been suggested. The disease associations for the closely related bocaviruses HBoV2-4 remain unknown. Increasing evidence shows that probiotics may reduce the risk of AOM of viral origin. Objectives of the study was to examine the prevalence and persistence of bocaviruses in consecutive nasopharyngeal samples (NPS) of otitis-prone children, and whether an association exists between HBoV and the child's characteristics, respiratory symptoms, and

Synchronous presentation of extramedullary plasmacytoma in the nasopharynx and the larynx.

Simultaneous extramedullary plasmacytoma of the nasopharynx and larynx is exceedingly rare; to the best of our knowledge, only 1 other case has been previously reported. We report a new case, which occurred in a 46-year-old woman. She was treated with a combination of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy. At 2 years of follow-up, no evidence of recurrence or progression to multiple myeloma was noted. We discuss the clinical features and treatment of plasma cell neoplasms in general and their three variants in particular.

[Congenital hairy polyp of the nasopharynx--a case report].

INTRODUCTION: Hairy polyps are very rare benign tumors that can occur anywhere in the body, and they are the most common congenital nasopharyngeal masses. CASE REPORT: A two-day-old full-term female was admitted to the newborn Special Care Unit with noisy breathing, intermittent upper airway obstruction and feeding difficulty. A 3.4 kg infant was born by spontaneous vaginal delivery to a healthy mother, following a normal pregnancy. On admission, she presented with noisy inspiratory breathing which was louder and more labored in prone position. Flexible endoscopy showed a pale sausage-like ma
