Occupational Class and Cancer Survival in Korean Men: Follow-Up Study of Nation-Wide Working Population.

Background: We aimed to describe inequalities in site-specific cancer survival across different occupational classes in Korean men. Methods: Subjects included cancer diagnosed members of the national employment insurance program during 1995-2008. A total of 134,384 male cases were followed by linking their data to the Death registry until 2009. Occupational classes were categorized according to the Korean Standard Occupational Classification (KSOC). Hazard ratio adjusting age and diagnosed year were calculated for each occupation by cancer sites. Results: Men in service/sales and blue-collar o

Secular changes in colorectal cancer incidence by subsite, stage at diagnosis, and race/ethnicity, 1992-2001.

BACKGROUND: Cancers of the colon and rectum are the third most common malignancy among males and females in the United States, although incidence and mortality have declined in recent years. We evaluated recent trends in colorectal cancer incidence in the United States by subsite and stage at diagnosis. METHODS: Data for this analysis included all cases of colorectal cancer diagnosed between 1992 and 2001 and reported to the National Cancer Institute's Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) Program. Incidence rates were stratified by gender, race/ethnicity, anatomic subsite, stage

Stepped Behavioral and Biological Screening for Oral Oncogenic HPV DNA in Middle-aged and Elderly Adults: A Feasibility Study.

UNLABELLED: Novel preventive interventions are needed to address the rising incidence of human papillomavirus (HPV)-mediated oropharyngeal cancer (HPV+ OPC). This pilot study evaluated the feasibility of a stepped, behavioral and biological screening program for oral oncogenic HPV infection, an intermediate HPV+ OPC outcome. This was a cross-sectional, feasibility study. Eligible 45-74 years old adults identified from three clinical research registries were administered a behavioral risk survey (step 1). Participant tobacco use and sexual behavior history were translated into a quantifiable ri

Age-specific trends in colorectal, appendiceal, and anal tumour incidence by histological subtype in Australia from 1990 to 2020: a population-based time-series analysis.

BACKGROUND: Early-onset bowel cancer incidence (age <50 years) has increased worldwide and is highest in Australia, but how this varies across histology and anatomical site remains unclear. We aimed to investigate appendiceal, proximal colon, distal colon, rectal, and anal cancer incidence trends by age and histology in Australia. METHODS: Cancer incidence rate data were obtained from all Australian cancer registries (1990-2020 period). Birth cohort-specific incidence rate ratios (IRRs) and annual percentage change in rates were estimated using age-period-cohort modelling and joinpoint regres

Patterns of Early-Onset Colorectal Cancer Among Nigerians and African Americans.

PURPOSE: Colorectal cancer (CRC) incidence rates are increasing among individuals < 50 years of age (early-onset CRC) globally with causes unknown. Racial/ethnic disparities in early-onset CRC have also grown more pronounced, because Black individuals have higher early-onset CRC incidence and poorer survival compared with White individuals. We describe the prevalence and burden of early-onset CRC among Africans in Nigeria and African Americans (AAs) in the United States. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We identified Black individuals diagnosed with a first primary CRC ages 18 to 49 years between 1989 a

Pediatric cancer survival in the United States from 2001 to 2021.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 15,000 United States (US) children and adolescents, 0-14 and 15-19 years old, respectively, are diagnosed with cancer annually. Although overall survival now exceeds 80%, cancer remains the second leading cause of death in this population, and improvements have not been uniform across subgroups. METHODS: Five- and 10-year relative survival (RS) for cancer cases diagnosed during 2001-2021 among individuals <20 years old at diagnosis were calculated using the National Program of Cancer Registries database, covering 87.4% of the US population. Results were stratified by

Trends and future projections of cervical cancer-related outcomes in Japan: What happens if the HPV vaccine program is not implemented?

Contrary to other developed countries, in Japan, recent years have seen increases in cervical cancer incidence and mortality among young people. However, the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine program, a key measure for avoiding cervical cancer, has been virtually suspended. Temporal changes in cervical cancer profiles in this unique situation have not been fully investigated epidemiologically. Our study aimed to determine the current status and future trends of the incidence and mortality of cervical cancer and precancerous lesions in Japan. Mortality rates of cervical cancer during 1975 to 2

Getting cancer prevalence right: using state cancer registry data to estimate cancer survivors.

ObjectiveCancer incidence and mortality statistics provide limited insight regarding the cancer survivor population and its needs. Cancer prevalence statistics enumerate cancer survivors--those currently living with cancer. Commonly used limited-duration prevalence (LDP) methods yield biased estimates of the number of survivors. National estimates may not allow sufficient granularity to inform local survivorship programs. In this study, complete prevalence (CP) methods are applied to actual North Carolina Central Cancer Registry (NCCCR) data to generate better, more informative prevalence esti

[County differences in incidence and mortality of malignant neoplasms in Hungary between 2005 and 2019].

The objective of our study was to map county differences in incidence and mortality by cancers and examine their changes over time. Based on the database of National Cancer Registry and Central Statistical Office, age-standardized incidence and mortality rates per 100,000 person-years were calculated for each county for 15 cancer types and 3 time periods. East-West divide was apparent in incidence and mortality of lung cancer, with larger weight in East (Borsod-Abaúj-Zemplén, Heves, Jász-Nagykun-Szolnok, Békés counties). Concentration of lip and oral cavity malignancies was identified in the n

Incidence of malignant mesothelioma in Germany 2009-2013.

PURPOSE: The malignant mesothelioma is a rare malignancy and mainly caused by occupational exposure to asbestos. German cancer registries are providing a national database to investigate temporal and regional patterns of mesothelioma incidence. These may be of interest for healthcare planning and for surveillance programs aiming at the formerly exposed workforce. METHODS: We analyzed population-based incidence data of malignant mesothelioma by site, type, sex, age, as well as district and state of patient's residence. Age-standardized incidence rates (AIRs40+) were calculated according to the

Mortality of early treatment for radiation-induced brain necrosis in head and neck cancer survivors: A multicentre, retrospective, registry-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The evidence of early treatment for radiation-induced brain necrosis (RN) in head and neck cancer survivors remains insufficient. This study aimed to determine whether early anti-RN treatment was associated with lower mortality. METHODS: In this cohort study, we utilized data from the Study in Radiotherapy-related Nervous System Complications (NCT03908502) and Hong Kong Cancer Registry. We included consecutive patients who had received radiotherapy (RT) for head and neck cancers and had subsequently developed RN between Jan 8, 2005 and Jan 19, 2020. Patients who had tumor progress
