Complicated penetrating foreign body neck injury.

Penetrating neck injury is associated with significant morbidity due to the several structures (neurological, vascular and aerodigestive) within close proximity to one another. This case highlights an uncommon presentation of an embedded foreign body following penetrating neck trauma and the decision-making required during management.

Traumatic Neck Injury: An Accidental Impalement by a Needlefish.

Encounters between marine animals and humans can result in critical injury and fatal complications. We highlight a 20-y-old male who sustained a penetrating injury to the neck as a result of impalement by needlefish (Tylosurus sp) while snorkeling. He sustained a penetrating injury in the posterior triangle of the neck. On presentation, he was stabilized and received empirical antibiotics, analgesia, and antitetanus toxoid injection before being transferred to a tertiary center. On presentation to the tertiary hospital, the patient was hemodynamically stable with no clinical evidence of injury

POSTERIOR PENETRATING INJURY OF THE NECK: A CASE REPORT.

- A 45-year-old male patient was admitted to the emergency unit due to posterior stab wound of the neck. The knife was directed diagonally from the left to the right side of the neck in the dorsoventral axis. The patient was fully conscious upon admission with pain and paresthesia along the upper right extremity. The patient underwent computed tomography (CT) and CT angiography scan of the neck, which revealed the knife blade piercing the left sided neck muscles and through the intervertebral ligaments of the C IV/C V in direction to the contralateral internal carotid artery, vertebral artery

Mortality and morbidity from combat neck injury.

BACKGROUND: Neck injury represents 11% of battle injuries in UK forces in comparison with 2% to 5% in US forces. The aim of this study was to determine the causes of death and long-term morbidity from combat neck injury in an attempt to recommend new methods of protecting the neck. METHOD: Hospital and postmortem records for all UK servicemen sustaining battle injuries to the neck between January 1, 2006 and December 31, 2010 were analyzed. RESULTS: Neck wounds were found in 152 of 1,528 (10%) of battle injured service personnel. Seventy-nine percent of neck wounds were caused by explosions

The relationship of neck injury and post-traumatic headache.

Although there may be several causes of post-traumatic headache, neck injury is perhaps the most common. This paper primarily reviews the relationship of neck injury, whiplash, and post-traumatic headache. Mechanisms may include structural damage from acceleration or extension of the neck, development of myofascial pain and trigger points, interaction of the trigeminal nociceptive system with the upper cervical (occipital) nerves, and psychologic and emotional factors. Although some healing will occur, the outcome may depend on a number of human factors (awareness of an impending collision) an

Ballistic head and neck injuries: management rationale and outcomes in a case series.

INTRODUCTION: Penetrating head and neck injuries with retained foreign bodies pose significant management challenges due to the anatomical density of vital structures. The optimal therapeutic strategy - ranging from surgical extraction to conservative observation - remains guided by individual patient and injury characteristics. METHODS: This case series retrospectively reviews four distinct presentations of retained metallic foreign bodies in the head and neck region. Diagnostic evaluation utilized advanced computed tomography (CT) for precise localization. Management strategies were individ

Biomechanical evaluation of head and neck injuries during head-first falls in skiing.

Skiing accidents may lead to severe head and neck injuries. This study uses the THUMS model to evaluate the initial conditions and related injury mechanisms of head impacts with the snow surface during skiing falls. Initial speed was found to be the main factor affecting head injury criterion (HIC). Impact position is the key factor affecting cervical curvature. Rear impacts cause excessive cervical spine extension, while frontal impacts cause excessive cervical spine flexion. Rear impacts are more likely to cause neck injuries. As the angle and speed increase, the degree of cervical spine inj

Dog Bite Injuries in the Head and Neck Region: A 20-Year Review.

Dog bite-related wounds seem to have become a common problem, especially when they relate to the head and neck region. According to Overall and Love, up to 18 per 1,000 people sustain a dog bite every year, of whom 3 need medical attention. Approximately 1 to 2% of bite injuries require hospitalization of the victims. Most of the lacerations are found in the upper lip and the nose regions and they are classified according to severity and concomitant damage to other organs. Bite wounds are considered "dirty" wounds and are prone to infection. When dealing with bite wounds, there is always an in

[Penetrating injuries of the head and neck region - a potentially life threatening situation].

UNLABELLED: Penetrating Injuries of the Head and Neck Region - A Potentially Life Threatening Situation Background: Cuts, stabs and gunshot wounds in the head and neck region are potentially life-threatening because of the high risk of vascular lesions. A consistent emergency management is usually based on an operative exploration of the wound with effective reconstruction of viable structures. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Various penetrating injuries of the head and neck region are described in 11 cases with respect of age, gender, course of events of injury, type of injury, involved structures, di

[Cranial and neck nerve injuries following carotid endarterectomy intervention. Review of the literature].

The aim of the study was to establish the operative techniques and findings that can influence the reported incidence of cranial and cervical nerve injuries. Eight main studies comprising 1,616 carotid endarterectomies and published over the period from 1990 to October 2000 were reviewed. There were no statistically significant differences between neck incision (vertical or transverse) and number of injuries. In one study, multiple deficits were observed most frequently in patients treated by the eversion technique (P = 0.2). Additional prospective trials are needed in large numbers of patient

Neck injuries among belted and unbelted occupants of the front seat of cars.

This article, part of a recently completed research project on safety belts, presents results on neck injuries. A total of 3927 injured front-seat occupants (drivers and passengers) involved in two-car crashes were studied. Among them, 725 sustained neck sprains (ICD-9 code 847.0); some of them may have sustained other injuries as well. The more serious injuries to the cervical spine were more prevalent among the unbelted occupants. Neck sprains were relatively more numerous among belted occupants compared with unbelted ones, with a relative risk estimate of 1.68. Similar results hold also for

Neck injuries in ice hockey: a recent, unsolved problem with many contributing factors.

Previously unrecognized, major neck injuries in hockey have become a common problem in Canada and they have increased markedly in the 1980s. At the present time, the incidence remains high and has shown no sign of diminishing. The etiology of the problem appears to be multifactorial. Several epidemiologic factors have been identified and a reporting system established so that prevention programs can be monitored. It is hoped that greater awareness of the risk factors among players, coaches, leagues, referees, and parents will be an effective prophylactic measure in itself. Prevention must invo

Neck irradiation, carotid injury and its consequences.

Carotid stenosis is a major sequela of head and neck irradiation that has not received the attention it deserves. Its impact on the quality of life of patients can be substantial. This review discusses the incidence, pathogenesis and consequences of radiation-induced carotid stenosis following head and neck irradiation. This review is based on literature search (Medline and Pub Med) and cross-referencing. The incidence of significant carotid stenosis following head and neck irradiation range from 30% to 50%. Patients with carotid stenosis are at increased risk for stroke. Factors such as hyper

Inverted drop testing and neck injury potential.

Inverted drop testing of vehicles is a methodology that has long been used by the automotive industry and researchers to test roof integrity and is currently being considered by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration as a roof strength test. In 1990 a study was reported which involved 8 dolly rollover tests and 5 inverted drop tests. These studies were conducted with restrained Hybrid III instrumented Anthropometric Test Devices (ATD) in production and rollcaged vehicles to investigate the relationship between roof strength and occupant injury potential. The 5 inverted drop tests i

Bladder neck dysynergia in spinal cord injury.

Urodynamic evaluations were performed in 43 male patients with spinal cord injuries, before any therapeutic decisions, and a minimum of 5 mo following the injury. Results were subdivided according to level of injury. Mean detrusor contraction pressures, incidence of detrusor-sphincter dysynergia (DSD), and incidence of detrusor-bladder neck dysynergia (DBND) were calculated. The incidence pattern of DBND was found to follow closely the incidence pattern of DSD, with the highest incidence among the upper thoracic injuries, considerably more than among the cervical injuries. A significantly high
