Retrospective analysis of negative cytology results correlated with a positive high-risk in the human papillomavirus result and subsequent results of patients over a period of three years.

This research paper evaluates the efficacy of co-testing in precluding cervical cancer, with a particular focus on distinguishable outcomes of the human papillomavirus (HPV) vs. cytology tests. A retrospective review of 5948 patients, who tested positive for high-risk HPV but showed negative cytologic findings, revealed that 15.006% tested positive in subsequent screenings. A comparative analysis of various commercial HPV tests highlighted the precision of mRNA-based HPV testing by Aptima (Hologic) in reducing the likelihood of false-negative cytology. The paper challenges the conviction that

Neoadjuvant chemotherapy in women with triple-negative breast cancer: real world results from Western Kenya.

BACKGROUND: Triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is an aggressive breast cancer subtype for which neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NACT) is used for locally advanced (LA) disease. Patients with TNBC who experienced a pathologic complete response (pCR) following NACT have been found to have extended overall survival (OS) compared to patients with residual disease. Sparse data exist on the frequency and impact of pCR following NACT for TNBC in East Africa. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed patients diagnosed with LA TNBC who received NACT between 2018 and 2022 at Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital

A Predictive Model for False-Negative Results in Ultrasound-Guided Percutaneous Transthoracic Needle Lung Biopsy.

OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to develop a post-procedural predictive model for assessing the risk of false-negative results in ultrasound-guided percutaneous transthoracic needle lung biopsy (US-PTLB). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two prospective cohorts were designed for model development and validation. Patients scheduled for US-PTLB underwent B-mode ultrasound (B-US), color Doppler flow imaging (CDFI), ultrasound elastography, and contrast-enhanced ultrasound (CEUS) of the lesions, with the final diagnosis confirmed through comprehensive evaluation. Risk factors associated with false-negative res

Molecular diagnosis of Chagas disease in patients with megaesophagus exhibiting negative or inconclusive serological results.

Chagasic megaesophagus is a relatively uncommon clinical manifestation in individuals with chronic Chagas disease (CD), and it has not been extensively documented in literature. However, individuals may exhibit negative or inconclusive serology for CD. This study aimed to assess the performance of molecular diagnostics for CD in participants with these conditions. This was a prospective cohort study that included 26 participants with negative or inconclusive conventional CD serology (Group I), 33 participants with positive CD serology and megaesophagus (Group II), and 10 participants with nega

Optimizing treatment administration strategies using negative mNGS results in corticosteroid-sensitive diffuse parenchymal lung diseases.

Timely adjustments of antibiotic and corticosteroid treatments are vital for patients with diffuse parenchymal lung diseases (DPLDs). In this study, 41 DPLD patients with negative metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) results who were responsive to corticosteroids were enrolled. Among these patients, about 26.8% suffered from drug-induced DPLD, while 9.8% presented autoimmune-related DPLD. Following the report of the negative mNGS results, in 34 patients with complete antibiotics administration profiles, 79.4% (27/34) patients discontinued antibiotics after receiving negative mNGS resu

Negative Results, Positive Outcome: A Case of Primary Livedoid Vasculopathy With an Elusive Laboratory Workup.

Livedoid vasculopathy (LV) is a chronic, recurrent thrombotic vasculopathy characterized by painful ulcerations on the lower extremities, which heal slowly and leave atrophic white scars known as "atrophie blanche." This report presents the case of a 31-year-old woman with a 4-year history of recurrent painful ulcerations on her legs and feet. A skin biopsy revealed findings consistent with LV, and an exhaustive laboratory workup ruled out secondary causes such as thrombophilia, malignancies, autoimmune diseases, and peripheral arterial disease. The patient showed remarkable improvement with a

Analysis of false-positive and false-negative results in 99mTc-MIBI SPECT/CT parathyroid imaging.

BACKGROUND: Exact preoperative localization is desirable to perform minimally invasive parathyroidectomy for hyperparathyroidism (HPT). This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic values of 99mTc-methoxyisobutylisonitrile (99mTc-MIBI) single photon emission computed tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) of parathyroid glands by analyzing the relationship between lesion weight and false-negative (FN) results, as well as to explain the possible reason. METHODS: The data from 314 patients with suspected HPT who underwent 99mTc-MIBI SPECT/CT parathyroid imaging between 2011 and 2022 were retr

Suboptimal Biological Sampling as a Probable Cause of False-Negative COVID-19 Diagnostic Test Results.

False-negative severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 test results can negatively impact the clinical and public health response to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We used droplet digital polymerase chain reaction (ddPCR) to demonstrate that human DNA levels, a stable molecular marker of sampling quality, were significantly lower in samples from 40 confirmed or suspected COVID-19 cases that yielded negative diagnostic test results (ie, suspected false-negative test results) compared with a representative pool of 87 specimens submitted for COVID-19 testing. Our results support sub

[Positive and negative predictors of long-term results after an osteotomy around the knee joint].

A frequently asked question in the context of any surgical procedure, including an osteotomy around the knee joint, is "which parameters are in favor of a therapeutic success in this special case?" If the analysis of the leg geometry is in favor of an osteotomy, then the patient must be assessed further, taking into account the joint status and patient's condition. Positive outcome predictors for long-term success of an osteotomy around the knee, especially for a valgus osteotomy at the tibia are a tibial bone varus angle (TBVA) > 3-5°, knee joint range of motion > 100° flexion, male sex, and

Follow-up of Women With Negative Pap Test Results and Abnormal Clinical Signs or Symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: Abnormal signs or symptoms recorded on Papanicolaou (Pap) test requisitions may reflect disease not detected with Pap testing. Since 2009, these cases have been reviewed in our laboratory by a second cytotechnologist and a cytopathologist. The objective of this study was to document follow-up findings on these patients. METHODS: A search for Pap test results of "Negative for intraepithelial lesion or malignancy, abnormal clinical signs or symptoms" was performed for cases from January 1, 2009, to October 10, 2013. Clinical information and follow-up findings were documented. RESUL

Occult metastases in node-negative breast cancer: A Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results-based analysis.

INTRODUCTION: The role of immunohistochemistry (IHC) for detecting occult lymph node disease in patients initially found to be node-negative by routine pathology is controversial. In this study, we evaluated trends associated with overall survival in node-negative breast cancer patients staged by IHC. METHODS: The Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database was queried for all patients with invasive breast adenocarcinoma and negative lymph nodes on routine pathology between 2004 and 2011 who underwent IHC to evaluate for occult nodal disease. Overall survival stratified by N-stage wa

Intervention effects on negative affect of CPS-referred children: results of a randomized clinical trial.

Exposure to early adversity places young children at risk for behavioral, physiological, and emotional dysregulation, predisposing them to a range of long-term problematic outcomes. Attachment and Biobehavioral Catch-up (ABC) is a 10-session intervention designed to enhance children's self-regulatory capabilities by helping parents to behave in nurturing, synchronous, and non-frightening ways. The effectiveness of the intervention was assessed in a randomized clinical trial, with parents who had been referred to Child Protective Services (CPS) for allegations of maltreatment. A study of genotyping for management of human papillomavirus-positive, cytology-negative cervical screening results.

The effective management of women with human papillomavirus (HPV)-positive, cytology-negative results is critical to the introduction of HPV testing into cervical screening. HPV typing has been recommended for colposcopy triage, but it is not clear which combinations of high-risk HPV types provide clinically useful information. This study included 18,810 women with Hybrid Capture 2 (HC2)-positive, cytology-negative results and who were age ≥30 years from Kaiser Permanente Northern California. The median follow-up was 475 days (interquartile range [IQR], 0 to 1,077 days; maximum, 2,217 days). T

Variability in results from negative binomial models for Lyme disease measured at different spatial scales.

Lyme disease has been the subject of many studies due to increasing incidence rates year after year and the severe complications that can arise in later stages of the disease. Negative binomial models have been used to model Lyme disease in the past with some success. However, there has been little focus on the reliability and consistency of these models when they are used to study Lyme disease at multiple spatial scales. This study seeks to explore how sensitive/consistent negative binomial models are when they are used to study Lyme disease at different spatial scales (at the regional and su

Rumination moderates the effects of daily events on negative mood: results from a diary study.

Rumination describes a detrimental response to distress that involves repetitive thoughts about one's emotional state and its causes and potential consequences. Many experimental studies have shown that induced state rumination exacerbates the effect of laboratory stressors on negative affect. The current study examines whether use of rumination in response to specific real-life events moderates the association between unpleasant daily events and negative mood. One hundred fifty-seven undergraduate participants completed daily diaries for six consecutive days. The daily diaries assessed curren

In vivo adulteration: excess fluid ingestion causes false-negative marijuana and cocaine urine test results.

Drug users can be highly motivated to obtain negative results on urine drug tests and may attempt to subvert the process by in vivo adulteration. The use of herbal products for "flushing" and "detoxification" is frequently advertised as an effective means of passing drug tests. Accordingly, a study was designed to determine the effects of ingestion of two herbal products, Naturally Klean Herbal Tea and Golden Seal root, and a diuretic medication, hydrochlorothiazide. The herbal tea was prepared in 1 gal of water as specified by the manufacturer. All other products were consumed with 1 gal of w

Cohort study of HIV-positive and HIV-negative tuberculosis, Nairobi, Kenya: comparison of bacteriological results.

We have set up a cohort of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive and negative patients with tuberculosis in order to address the problems associated with HIV-related tuberculosis. We present here the results of sputum smear microscopy, culture, mycobacterial identification tests and drug susceptibility assays from specimens taken at presentation. In this selected population of largely pulmonary tuberculosis cases, HIV infection is not associated with significant differences in sputum smear positivity rate, culture positivity rate or initial drug resistance. No atypical mycobacteria were
