BACKGROUND: Black Americans have disproportionately higher rates and earlier onset of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (ADRD) relative to White Americans. We currently lack a comprehensive understanding of how the lived experience and broader societal factors, including cumulative exposure to structural racism and the mechanisms underlying the risks, may contribute to elevated ADRD risk in Black Americans.
METHODS: The Think PHRESH study builds on existing, community-based research infrastructure, from the ongoing Pittsburgh Hill/Homewood Research on Neighborhood Change and Health (P

BACKGROUND: Although overall air quality has improved in the United States, air pollution remains unevenly distributed across neighborhoods, producing disproportionate environmental burdens for minoritized and socioeconomically disadvantaged residents for whom greater exposure to other structurally rooted neighborhood stressors is also more frequent. These interrelated dynamics and layered vulnerabilities each have well-documented associations with physical and psychological health outcomes; however, much remains unknown about the joint effects of environmental hazards and neighborhood socioec

With data from the Neighborhoods and Breast Cancer Study, we examined the associations between body size, social and built environments, and survival following breast cancer diagnosis among 4347 women in the San Francisco Bay Area. Lower neighborhood socioeconomic status and greater neighborhood crowding were associated with higher waist-to-hip ratio (WHR). After mutual adjustment, WHR, but not neighborhood characteristics, was positively associated with overall mortality and marginally with breast cancer-specific mortality. Our findings suggest that WHR is an important modifiable prognostic f

Marriage and parenthood are associated with weight gain and residential mobility. Little is known about how obesity-relevant environmental contexts differ according to family structure. We estimated trajectories of neighborhood poverty, population density, and density of fast food restaurants, supermarkets, and commercial and public physical activity facilities for adults from a biracial cohort (CARDIA, n=4,174, aged 25-50) over 13 years (1992-93 through 2005-06) using latent growth curve analysis. We estimated associations of marriage, parenthood, and race with the observed neighborhood traje

PURPOSE: To examine the association between neighborhood material deprivation and days at home (DAH) after glioblastoma diagnosis.
METHODS: This population-based retrospective cohort study used linked administrative data from Ontario, Canada, for adults diagnosed with glioblastoma during 2003-2023. Material deprivation was assigned using Ontario Marginalization Index quintiles (Q1, least deprived; Q5, most deprived). The primary outcome was DAH within 365 days, defined as days alive outside acute hospitals, inpatient rehabilitation, and continuing or complex care. The primary analysis include

BACKGROUND: Examining how the relationship between alcohol outlet density and alcohol-related harms may vary by neighborhood-level factors is important for informing the evaluation and implementation of environmental alcohol interventions and identifying other community conditions that can be modified to reduce alcohol-related harms and inequities. This study aims to extend prior research by testing whether housing eviction-a cause of housing insecurity and neighborhood destabilization-modifies the impact of alcohol outlet density on hospitalizations for assault and alcohol use disorder (AUD)

IMPORTANCE: Depression and factors reflecting neighborhood social structure (ie, socioeconomic deprivation, ethnic heterogeneity, residential mobility, and urbanicity) have each been linked to criminal convictions. However, how the association between depression and crime varies across different neighborhood types, and the extent to which it reflects unmeasured familial confounding, remains unclear.
OBJECTIVE: To examine whether the association between depression and violent and nonviolent criminal convictions varies across neighborhood types, and to assess the extent to which unmeasured fami

PURPOSE: Physical inactivity among youth is highly prevalent worldwide. Although proximity to parks and recreational facilities is generally associated with higher physical activity (PA), unsafe or hostile neighborhood environments may limit their use. This study examined whether neighborhood hostility moderates the association between access to recreational facilities and adherence to World Health Organization PA guidelines among Chilean youth.
METHODS: This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2024 National Physical Activity and Sport Survey of Chile, including 3,477 urban participa

BACKGROUND: There is limited information on the association between walkability and health in Asian countries.
OBJECTIVE: Our study aimed to investigate the association between neighborhood walkability and mortality in Taiwanese adults.
METHODS: We selected 457,874 participants (≥18 y of age) from Taiwan who joined a standard medical examination program between 1998 and 2016 and followed them until 31 July 2021. Three walkability measures were estimated within a walking distance of 640m of participant's addresses: points of interest (POI), transit stations, and impedance (restrictions to wal

Over the past few decades, U.S. cities have changed dramatically, largely because of two major trends: the fall of violence and the rise of urban inequality. Despite the attention given to each of these trends, little research has assessed how they are related to each other. This study is the first to generate causal evidence on the impact of violent crime on economic residential segregation. We document the effect of the crime drop on economic segregation in 500 U.S. cities between 1990 and 2010, using exogenous shocks to city crime rates to identify causal effects. We find that declining vio

OBJECTIVE: Schools are key for advancing adolescent well-being, yet the role of school-level factors in supporting student mental health in the context of neighborhood deprivation is unknown.
METHOD: Students (N = 30,469, age: mean = 15.11 years, SD = 1.75 years) in 62 middle and high schools in Massachusetts completed the Substance Use and Risk Factors (SURF) Survey to assess psychiatric symptoms. Neighborhood deprivation was assessed through the census-extracted Area Deprivation Index (ADI). School-level moderators included school staffing patterns (teacher and mental health staff-to-studen

Neighborhood socioeconomic status (SES) is related to a wide range of health outcomes, but existing research is dominated by cross-sectional study designs, which are particularly vulnerable to bias by unmeasured characteristics related to both residential location decisions and health-related outcomes. Further, little is known about the mechanisms by which neighborhood SES might influence health. Therefore, we estimated longitudinal relationships between neighborhood SES and physical activity (PA), a theorized mediator of the neighborhood SES-health association. We used data from four years of

BACKGROUND: Efforts to promote physical activity through environmental changes in low-income, urban, and minority areas should be informed by an understanding of the value that residents place on different neighborhood features and characteristics.
METHODS: Neighborhood rebuilding preferences among 442 New Orleans residents after the damage from Hurricane Katrina were assessed by a random-digit-dialed telephone survey conducted between April 25, 2006 and May 2, 2006. The survey instrument assessed the importance (on a 5-point Likert-type scale on which 1=not at all important and 5=extremely i

BACKGROUND: Post-stroke mortality is higher among residents of disadvantaged neighborhoods, but it is not known whether neighborhood inequalities are specific to stroke survival or similar to mortality patterns in the general population. We hypothesized that neighborhood disadvantage would predict higher poststroke mortality, and neighborhood effects would be relatively larger for stroke patients than for individuals with no history of stroke.
METHODS AND RESULTS: Health and Retirement Study participants aged ≥50 years without stroke at baseline (n=15 560) were followed ≤12 years for incident

PURPOSE: Persistent self-control in the context of upward mobility in low-income adolescents, especially those of color, may have physiological costs, such as greater risks of developing cardiometabolic diseases in young adulthood. One potential mechanism linking self-control to cardiometabolic health is epigenetic age acceleration (EAA). However, little is known regarding the association between high self-control and EAA, as well as what factors may play protective roles. Therefore, we evaluated (1) the association between self-control and EAA and if this association varies by race and ethnic
