Pyogranulomatous lymphadenitis with Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon caused by Neisseria species in a domestic shorthair cat.

An 11-year-old male neutered domestic shorthair cat underwent investigations for right mandibular and prescapular lymph node enlargement and weight loss. Cytology of the mandibular and prescapular lymph nodes revealed marked pyogranulomatous inflammation and mild neutrophilic, non-septic inflammation, respectively. Excisional biopsy of both lymph nodes was performed. Histopathology of the mandibular lymph node revealed severe pyogranulomatous inflammation, with prominent Splendore-Hoeppli phenomenon. Histopathology of the prescapular lymph node was consistent with reactive lymphoid hyperplasia

An Evaluation of Novel Inflammatory Biomarkers in Children with Kingella kingae Osteoarticular Infections.

Kingella kingae is now recognised as the leading cause of osteoarticular infections (OAIs) in young children. Because these infections typically produce mild symptoms and a weak inflammatory response, early diagnosis remains challenging. Complete blood count-derived immune-inflammatory biomarkers (IIBs) have recently gained interest as accessible, low-cost indicators of systemic inflammation, with potential diagnostic value in several fields, including oncology, rheumatology, cardiology, and infectious diseases. This study therefore aimed to assess whether IIBs could support the screening of K

Kingella kingae in Pediatric Bone and Joint Infections: The Diagnostic Value of Oropharyngeal Testing.

Oropharyngeal Kingella kingae DNA was identified in 16 of 16 children with proven K. kingae bone and joint infection (BJI) (sensitivity 100%; 95% confidence interval: 79-100) and in 33 of 112 with disproven K. kingae BJI (specificity 71%; 95% confidence interval: 61-79). Due to low specificity, we advocate against oropharyngeal K. kingae DNA testing as a diagnostic tool in children suspected of BJI.

Outbreaks of Kingella kingae Infections in Daycare Centers Suggest Tissue Tropism of the Causative Strains.

BACKGROUND: Although Kingella kingae is recognized as an important pediatric pathogen, our knowledge of the virulence factors involved in the invasion of specific host's tissues is limited. Outbreaks of K kingae infections in daycare centers represent natural experiments in which a single virulent strain, introduced into a cohort of susceptible young children, causes multiple infections. If K kingae strains exhibit tissue tropism, the syndromes observed in a given cluster of cases would be relatively homogeneous. METHODS: Clinical data of all the K kingae outbreaks known to date were gathered

Microevolution of Neisseria lactamica during nasopharyngeal colonisation induced by controlled human infection.

Neisseria lactamica is a harmless coloniser of the infant respiratory tract, and has a mutually-excluding relationship with the pathogen Neisseria meningitidis. Here we report controlled human infection with genomically-defined N. lactamica and subsequent bacterial microevolution during 26 weeks of colonisation. We find that most mutations that occur during nasopharyngeal carriage are transient indels within repetitive tracts of putative phase-variable loci associated with host-microbe interactions (pgl and lgt) and iron acquisition (fetA promotor and hpuA). Recurrent polymorphisms occurred in

Multiple Functions of Glutamate Uptake via Meningococcal GltT-GltM L-Glutamate ABC Transporter in Neisseria meningitidis Internalization into Human Brain Microvascular Endothelial Cells.

We previously reported that Neisseria meningitidis internalization into human brain microvasocular endothelial cells (HBMEC) was triggered by the influx of extracellular L-glutamate via the GltT-GltM L-glutamate ABC transporter, but the underlying mechanism remained unclear. We found that the ΔgltT ΔgltM invasion defect in assay medium (AM) was alleviated in AM without 10% fetal bovine serum (FBS) [AM(-S)]. The alleviation disappeared again in AM(-S) supplemented with 500 μM glutamate. Glutamate uptake by the ΔgltT ΔgltM mutant was less efficient than that by the wild-type strain, but only upo

[The diagnostic specificity of the antigen-binding lymphocyte test in Neisseria-induced infections].

Neisseria-induce different infections, but many representatives of this genus are saprophytes. In this connection it is important to evaluate the species, and for N. meningitidis also group specificity of the immunological diagnostics of meningococcal infection and gonorrhea. In this work the specificity of the antigen-binding lymphocyte test was studied in experiments with the immunization of rabbits and the examination of patients. In the tests of indirect rosette-formation and its inhibition the role of antigenic relationships between different pathogenic and nonpathogenic Neisseria was exc

The role of porins in neisserial pathogenesis and immunity.

Neisseria meningitidis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae are Gram-negative pathogenic bacteria responsible for bacterial meningitis and septicemia, and the sexually transmitted disease gonorrhea, respectively. Porins are the most represented outer membrane proteins in the pathogenic Neisseria species, functioning as pores for the exchange of ions, and are characterized by a trimeric beta-barrel structure. Neisserial porins have been shown to act as adjuvants in the immune response via activation of B cells and other antigen-presenting cells (APCs). Their effect on the immune response is mediated by up

Prolonged occurrence of Moraxella bovis infection on a restricted heifer farm.

An epizootiologic study was conducted for infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK) on a large grassland farm rearing a total of 1,300-1,400 heifers during May to October in both 1991 and 1992. Heifers were examined for infection with Moraxella bovis, and isolation of M. bovis from the affected eyes and from Asian face flies (Musca bezzii Patton et Cragg) swarming on the heifer face was carried out. During the observation period, 10.7% of the heifers in 1991 and 5.3% of the heifers in 1992 were affected with IBK. Eight M. bovis isolates were isolated from the ocular swabs of affected heifer

Polyp and fibrous adhesion formation in acute otitis media caused by non-typeable or type b Haemophilus influenzae or Moraxella catarrhalis.

Among a variety of other histopathologic changes, polyps and fibrous adhesions are readily formed in the middle ear mucosa during experimental acute otitis media (AOM) caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae. Quantitative studies on experimental AOM caused by other bacteria have shown that some of these histopathologic changes, such as adaptive bone modeling and increase in goblet cell density, differ according to the type of bacteria. This investigation surveys polyp and fibrous adhesion formation in experimental AOM caused by either non-typeable or type b Haemophilus influenzae, or Moraxella cata

Oropharyngeal Carriage of Kingella kingae and Transient Synovitis of the Hip in Young Children: A Case-control Study.

BACKGROUND: Transient synovitis of the hip affects mostly preschool children, and its etiology is unknown. Kingella kingae has been identified recently as a common etiologic agent of osteoarticular infections (OAI) in young children and could potentially be associated to transient synovitis of the hip. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the association between transient synovitis of the hip and oropharyngeal carriage of K. kingae among preschool children. METHODS: This was a prospective case-control study conducted at a tertiary care pediatric emergency department. Cases were ch

Imaging of Kingella kingae musculoskeletal infections in children: a series of 5 cases.

PURPOSE: Kingella kingae musculoskeletal infections continue to be under-diagnosed and there remains a paucity of literature on its imaging features. The purpose of this manuscript is to review the imaging, clinical, and laboratory findings of microbiology-proven K. kingae infections. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of musculoskeletal infections between January 1, 2013 and Dec 31, 2016 yielded 134 patients from whom 5 patients had confirmed K. kingae infections (3 boys and 2 girls, mean age of 16 months, range 9-38 months). [Gram-negative coccus infection].

The main pathogens of gram-negative infections are Neisseria gonorrhoeae, Neisseria meningitidis and Moraxella catarrhalis infection. N. Gonorrhoeae infection is one of the STD, but the chemotherapy for this infection is very easy because this pathogen is very susceptible to new quinolones. Meningococcal infection is very rare in Japan. Since 1980, M. catarrhalis is one of the important pathogen of respiratory infections such as acute bronchitis, pneumonia, chronic bronchitis. This pathogen also causes acute sinusitis and otitis. Most pathogenic strains of M. catarrhalis are beta-lactamase pro

Infant respiratory syncytial virus prophylaxis and nasopharyngeal microbiota until 6 years of life: a subanalysis of the MAKI randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) infection during infancy is suggested to cause long-term wheeze. In turn, wheeze has been associated with bacterial dysbiosis of the respiratory tract. We investigated the effects of RSV prophylaxis with palivizumab in otherwise healthy preterm infants on respiratory microbiota composition at 1 year and 6 years of age. METHODS: In a multicentre, single-blind, randomised, placebo-controlled trial (the MAKI trial), infants born between 32-35 weeks of gestation, in one university and in 15 regional hospitals in the the Netherlands, were randomly assi

Trends in antimicrobial susceptibility of bacterial pathogens of the respiratory tract.

Rates of antimicrobial resistance have been increasing in bacteria responsible for community-acquired lower respiratory tract infections in the United States. Nearly 100% of clinical isolates of Moraxella catarrhalis now produce beta-lactamase, an enzyme that renders this pathogen resistant to such agents as penicillin, ampicillin, and amoxicillin. However, this organism remains nearly uniformly susceptible to alternative oral antimicrobials, such as cephalosporins, macrolides, tetracyclines, beta-lactamase inhibitor combinations, and the combination of trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. The susce

High respiratory virus oropharyngeal carriage rate during Kingella kingae osteoarticular infections in children.

AIM: Kingella kingae osteoarticular (KKO) infections are frequently associated with upper respiratory tract infections. However, no comparative studies detecting respiratory viruses had ever been performed between KKO and non-KKO (NKO). PATIENTS & METHODS: Eighteen viruses were searched by FilmArray(®) Respiratory Panel (BioFire Diagnostics, UT, USA) in the oropharynx of 6-to-48-month-children admitted for KKO and NKO in 2013. RESULTS: At least one virus was detected in the oropharynx of 19/21 (90.5%) KKO and 3/8 (37.5%) NKO cases (p = 0.008). In KKO group, human rhinovirus was predominant (

Adaptive bone modeling and remodeling in acute otitis media caused by non-typeable or type B Haemophilus influenzae or Moraxella catarrhalis.

Experimental studies have shown that acute otitis media caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae alters modeling dynamics in bone tissue structures surrounding the middle ear cavity. Initial resorption of bone is followed by formative activity, seen as massive osteoneogenesis. However, neither resorptive nor formative activity occurs in the otic capsule, supporting the existence of a perilymphatic zone of specialized bone. This study investigates adaptive bone modeling in acute otitis media caused by other bacteria frequently encountered in this disease. Seventy-five rats were inoculated with either
