Postoperative recurrence of an IPMN of the pancreas with a fistula to the stomach.

We report on a case of a 74 year old man who was diagnosed with a recurrence of non-invasive carcinoma of intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (non-invasive IPMN) by postoperative gastroscopy (GS). A pylorus preserving pancreatico duodenectomy for IPMN in the pancreatic head was performed. A histopathological study revealed non-invasive adenocarcinoma. At first, the local recurrence of the tumor around the superior mesenteric artery circumference was diagnosed and disappeared with gemcitabine. Later, the GS showed the elevated lesion with mucin hypersecretion in the remnant stomach. The les

Palatal schwannoma in a young female patient: report of a case and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: A few cases of oral schwannomas in paediatric patients have appeared in the literature so far; however, there are no studies focusing solely on paediatric oral schwannomas. The aim of this study is to report a case of palatal schwannoma in a young female patient and review the pertinent literature on oral schwannomas in paediatric patients. CASE REPORT: A 12-year-old girl presented with a growing swelling of 2 weeks duration on the hard palate. With a provisional diagnosis of a salivary gland neoplasm an incisional biopsy was performed under local anesthesia and the histologic exa

Primary vulvar and vaginal extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral neuroectodermal tumor: diagnostic confirmation with CD99 immunostaining and reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction.

Two cases of extraosseous Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral neuroectodermal tumor arising in unusual, superficial sites are reported. One tumor involved the vaginal wall of a 35-year-old woman, and the other neoplasm arose in the dermis of the vulva in a 28-year-old woman. The tumors showed characteristic microscopic features of Ewing's sarcoma/peripheral neuroectodermal tumor with nodular monotonous proliferations of undifferentiated, small, round, hyperchromatic cells with a low mitotic index. Rare rosette-like formations were apparent only in the vulvar neoplasm. The tumors displayed intense immun

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans of the breast: A case study.

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans (DFSP) is a superficial mesenchymal neoplasm that originates from the dermal fibroblasts and tends to be locally aggressive. Although infrequent, it is one of the most common cutaneous sarcomas. It mainly affects young and middle-aged patients 20 to 50 years old. Any area of skin may be involved, but the most common sites of presentation are the trunk and extremities. DFSP of the breast is extremely rare. It classically presents as a nodular, exophytic, cutaneous mass, though initially it can manifest as a flat plague and can show persistent but slow growth for

Early local recurrence of well-differentiated liposarcoma of the hypopharynx in a young adult: a case report and literature review.

Well-differentiated liposarcoma (WDLPS), also termed atypical lipomatous tumor, is a low-grade malignant adipocytic neoplasm characterized by indolent growth, limited metastatic potential, and a propensity for local recurrence. Primary WDLPS arising in the hypopharyngeal region is exceptionally rare, particularly in young adults, and may clinically mimic benign submucosal lesions. We report the case of a 24-year-old man who presented with a one-month history of persistent foreign body sensation in the throat. Flexible laryngoscopy revealed a smooth submucosal mass arising from the left hypopha

Ocular inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor in a pediatric patient.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a mesenchymal neoplasm that rarely metastasizes and is more commonly seen in children, adolescents, and young adults than older adults. These tumors, composed of myofibroblasts and inflammatory cells, are often confused for a local infection due to the inflammatory cell infiltration, and they form in mucosal surfaces but rarely arise in the orbit. We present the case of a 6-year-old girl with excisional biopsy-confirmed conjunctival stromal IMT. There was no evidence of recurrence 2 years following resection with no subsequent medical therapy.

Angiomyofibroblastoma of the vulva.

BACKGROUND: Angiomyofibroblastoma (AMF) is a rare benign mesenchymal neoplasm that arises in the pelviperial region. CASE: A patient presented with a painless mass in the right vulva. Under the preoperative diagnosis of Bartholin cyst, she underwent a simple tumor excision. Pathological examination revealed an AMF. Immunohistochemical examination showed that tumor cells were positive for estrogen receptor, progesterone receptor, vimentin, and CD34. She has been with no evidence of local recurrence for ten months after surgery. CONCLUSION: AMF of the vulva is a distinctive mesenchymal tumor t

Adenoid cystic carcinoma of buccal mucosa.

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a malignant neoplasm most commonly originating in the salivary glands of head and neck region. The clinical and pathological findings typical of this tumour include slow growth, perineural invasion and potential local recurrence. Up to 50% of these tumours occur in the intraoral minor salivary glands usually in the hard palate. We present a case report of a 26-year-old woman who was diagnosed with adenoid cystic carcinoma of the right buccal mucosa. The peculiarity of the lesion and the approach we made is the key factor in the presentation.

Esthesioneuroblastoma: one of the causes of proptosis.

Esthesioneuroblatoma (Olfactory neuroblastoma) is a rare malignant neoplasm arising from the olfactory epithelium with bimodal age distribution between with first peak in second decades and second peak in sixth decade. Proptosis due to esthesioneuroblastoma is one of the rare causes. They have a long natural history characterized by frequent local or regional recurrence. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging are the imaging modalities for diagnosing these tumors. A multidisciplinary approach with surgery and radiation therapy is an excellent treatment options for these tumors with

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumor of the penis: a case report and review of the literature.

Malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors (MPNSTs) are rare soft tissue sarcomas that arise from peripheral nerve fibers and are derived from Schwann cells, perineural cells, or fibroblasts. MPNST is an aggressive neoplasm in which local recurrence is common and complete excision of the mass should be the goal of surgery. We report a case of MPNST involving the penis in a 14-month-old boy. This is only the second reported case of penile MPNST without evidence of neurofibromatosis 1 and the first of which to occur in a patient this young.

An unusual case of delayed rectosigmoid compression by pelvic mass following cystectomy: report of a case.

A rare case of rectosigmoid compression by an enormous obscure pelvic mass after cystectomy is reported. Pelvic collections in the form of abscess, hematoma, lymphocele, and urinoma are not uncommon in the early postoperative period following pelvic surgery. However, delayed appearance of a benign pelvic mass as a late complication of surgery is very rare. Localized pelvic masses discovered years after cystectomy for bladder tumor may lead to an erroneous clinical impression of local recurrence of the primary neoplasm. Differential diagnosis of common pelvic masses, diagnostic studies, and tre

Adult rhabdomyoma of soft palate.

A case of adult rhabdomyoma of the soft palate in a 60-year-old man studied by methods including electron microscopy, is reported. The patient was free of recurrence 2 years later. The eleven previously documented cases of adult rhabdomyoma involving the oral cavity are reviewed. The concept that rhabdomyoma is a neoplasm rather than a hamartoma is favored. Adequate local excision appears to be curative. The differences between the cardiac and extracardiac forms of rhabdomyoma as well as between adult rhabdomyoma and especially granular-cell myoblastoma and fetal rhabdomyoma are presented.

Salvage endoscopic nasopharyngectomy in locally recurrent carcinoma adjacent to the internal carotid artery-A case report.

KEY CLINICAL MESSAGE: In cases adjacent to critical structures, such as the internal carotid artery, surgeons should meticulously explore the feasibility of surgery before declaring the neoplasm unresectable. ABSTRACT: Salvage treatment for locally recurrent carcinoma of the nasopharynx constitutes a unique challenge. Surgery remains the gold standard treatment modality. Endoscopic nasopharyngectomy is considered a safe and feasible procedure overcoming the morbidities of an open surgery. Tumor adjacency to the internal carotid artery (ICA) is not an absolute contradiction for the endoscopic

DEK::AFF2 Squamous Cell Carcinomas of the Sinonasal Region and Temporal Bone Diagnosed After Recurrences: A Report of Two Patients.

DEK::AFF2 squamous cell carcinoma is a recently recognized entity characterized by a non-viral-related non-keratinizing squamous cell carcinoma with chromosomal rearrangement between DEK on 6p22.3 and AFF2 on Xq28. This neoplasm is associated with an aggressive clinical behavior, particularly regarding local recurrences and distant metastases even with its deceptively bland histomorphology. In this article, we report on 2 patients with DEK::AFF2 squamous cell carcinomas, which were only diagnosed at the time of recurrence. Patient #1 was originally misdiagnosed with inverted papilloma. This oc

Does a Positive Appendiceal Resection Margin in Low-Grade Appendiceal Mucinous Neoplasms, Warrant Additional Surgery? Our Institution Experience and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Management of low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (LAMN) with positive resection margin is controversial. Some guidelines recommend surgical reexcision, whereas others recommend a conservative approach. The purpose of our study was to determine whether involvement of the resection margin by LAMN is a risk factor for local recurrence requiring additional surgery. DESIGN: This is a retrospective study (January 2000-December 2020) of uncomplicated LAMNs with neoplastic epithelium or dissecting mucin at the resection margin. For cases treated with additional surgery, the presence

Superficial GLI1-amplified mesenchymal neoplasms: Expanding the spectrum of an emerging entity which reaches the realm of dermatopathology.

Mesenchymal neoplasms with GLI1 alterations (rearrangements and/or amplification) have been reported recently in several anatomic locations, which include head and neck, soft tissue, and gastrointestinal tract. Herein, to the best of our knowledge, we describe the first three cases of superficial/subcutaneous mesenchymal neoplasm with GLI1 amplification. The neoplasms exhibited low-grade cytologic features with predominant round cell morphology, glomangioma-like areas and a rich background capillary network. There were two to three mitotic figures per 10 HPF and focal necrosis in one case. The

[A case of small-cell malignant melanoma in a pregnant patient].

INTRODUCTION: Malignant melanoma (MM) is an aggressive neoplasm that may affect pregnant women. Malignant melanoma with small-cell morphology (MMSCM) is a rare variant of MM that can cause confusion in its diagnosis. OBJECTIVE: To report a fatal case of MMSCM in a pregnant woman, highlighting immunohistochemistry (IHC) as a very useful tool in the final diagnosis. CLINICAL CASE: A 22-year-old pregnant female presented with a 5-cm cutaneous tumor in her right leg. The lesion was excised but the patient refused any further therapy. The natural outcome of this neoplasm occurred with local recur

Urothelial tumors of the bladder.

Neoplasms originating from the transitional epithelium of the urinary bladder are rare in children. This paper examines the clinical, epidemiological and histopathological characteristics of 3 such cases. The patients were males aged 4, 8 and 14 years at the time of diagnosis. Total painless hematuria was the presenting symptom in all of them. There was no history of previous exposure to dyes or other chemicals, but 1 patient was a systematic cigarette smoker. All tumors were solitary, noninfiltrating, grade 1 neoplasms. Following their local resection, no recurrences were noted 3-8 years post
