Metastatic basal cell carcinomas (mBCCs) are exceedingly rare, with an estimated variable prevalence rate between 0.003 and 0.55% among all basal cell carcinomas. Although there are hundreds of reported cases of mBCCs, a dearth of evidence exists of mBCCs in patients with Gorlin syndrome-an autosomal dominant genetic disorder. The purpose of this article was to present the first and largest case series of patients with mBCC in Gorlin. A literature review (LR) compares our data with the existing evidence base to underscore the importance of early surveillance, diagnosis and surgical interventio

The prevalent keratinocyte-derived neoplasms of the skin are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Both so-called non-melanoma skin cancers comprise the most common cancers in humans by far. Common risk factors for both tumor entities include sun exposure, DNA repair deficiencies leading to chromosomal instability, or immunosuppression. Yet, fundamental differences in the development of the two different entities have been and are currently unveiled. Marginal vacuoles (MVs) or fire-flare appearance in May-Grünwald Giemsa stained fine needle aspiration (FNA) smears was initially described as a distinctive feature of thyrotoxic goiter in hyperthyroidism, but was subsequently found in various nontoxic thyroid lesions, both non-neoplastic and neoplastic. Although these MVs have been characterized as dilated endoplasmic reticulum, and manifestation of active pinocytosis/vacuoles containing colloid, their exact nature is not so far resolved. In this connection, FNA smears of 82 hyperplasia cases, consisting of 71 colloid goiters and 11 hyperplas

p63, cytokeratin (CK) 5/6 and CK 14 have been employed in diagnostic pathology as markers of basal, squamous and myoepithelial differentiation in several types of human neoplasms; however, there is scant data on the concurrent expression of these markers in large series of human neoplasms. We analyzed the distribution of these three immunohistochemical markers in 51 normal human tissue samples, 350 carcinomas, 25 malignant melanomas (MMs), and 25 glioblastomas using three serial sections of tissue array research program (TARP)-4 multi-tumor tissue microarray. Also, we performed double immunost

Immunocytochemical studies of the expression of PCNA, Ki67 and p53 protein have been done by different groups on sporadic keratocysts (OKCs) and OKCs associated with the naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS). These 'markers' have in common that they are all expressed in actively proliferating cells, particularly in neoplasms. The findings were compared with their expression in dentigerous and radicular cysts. While there was some variability in the reported results, probably because of technical inconsistencies and the use of different antibodies, a definite trend emerged. In general P

Gorlin-Goltz syndrome, also known as nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS), is a rare, inherited autosomal dominant disorder primarily caused by mutations in the PTCH1 gene, which regulates the Hedgehog signaling pathway. This genetic defect leads to the uncontrolled proliferation of basal cells, resulting in the formation of multiple basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) and odontogenic keratocysts (OKCs). This study aims to present a complex clinical case of a patient with Gorlin-Goltz syndrome who developed multiple recurrent metastatic basal cell carcinomas on the facial region, detailing th

BACKGROUND: Nevus sebaceus is commonly associated with the development of secondary neoplasms. Data on the frequency of malignant tumors vary considerably in published reports.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to analyze the distribution of secondary neoplasm in nevus sebaceus.
METHODS: A retrospective analysis of all cases of nevus sebaceus diagnosed at the Ackerman Academy of Dermatopathology from 1999 to 2012 was conducted.
RESULTS: A total of 706 patients (707 specimens) were included in the study. Trichoblastoma was the most frequent benign tumor (n = 52, 7.4%) followed by syringocystadenoma papil

AIMS: Papillary neoplasms of the middle and inner ear are rare and poorly characterised. The current World Health Organization classification divides them into two major subtypes: aggressive papillary tumours (APTs) and endolymphatic sac tumours (ELSTs). The aim of this article is to present two papillary neoplasms of the middle ear that do not fit into either the classic APT category or the classic ELST category, and compare them with three ELSTs.
METHODS AND RESULTS: The patients were a 48-year-old female and a 59-year-old male without a history of other neoplasms. Histology showed papillar

Skin malignancies are commonly encountered as primary or incidental findings. Neoplasms that affect the skin include primary (basal cell carcinoma, squamous cell carcinoma, melanoma, and Merkel cell carcinoma) and secondary (mesenchymal neoplasms, lymphoma, and metastases) tumors. Imaging provides valuable anatomic information (tumor size, depth of involvement, presence of distant metastasis, and data for guiding biopsy) and functional information (metabolic activity and sentinel node mapping data). This information, in addition to biopsy results, improves the histopathologic characterization

Nevus sebaceus (NS)(organoid nevus) is a benign follicular neoplasm that commonly occurs on the scalp, face, or neck. With time, it may give rise to benign or malignant tumors such as trichoblastoma, syringocystadenoma papilliferum, and basal cell carcinoma (BCC). Rarely, other types of neoplasms may develop. We present a 76-year-old woman with several trichoblastomas as well as a primary cutaneous apocrine carcinoma arising within a preexisting NS that was treated with frozen section excision.

Orbital exenteration was performed in 102 patients at the Mayo Clinic during the 20-year period from 1967 through 1986. The surgical procedure was performed for mucormycosis in one patient and for pain and deformity after a severe facial burn in another; in the remaining 100 patients, exenteration was used to treat a neoplastic disorder. Although 19 different neoplasms were encountered, squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, and melanoma constituted 70% of the total. In 82 patients with no known residual tumor or metastases at operation, the 1-year survival rate was 88.6%, the 5-year r

Cases of cutaneous neoplasms occurring on prior sites of trauma and scars are common. Vaccination scars are common sites of this phenomenon. We report a case of superficial basal cell carcinoma (BCC) occurring on a prior bacille Calmette-Guérin (BCG) site in a 59-year-old man. Any modification on a prior vaccination scar should prompt a skin biopsy to be performed to rule out a cutaneous malignancy.

The most common skin cancer is basal cell carcinoma. The neoplasm is characterized by several different morphologic presentations; the most frequent morphologic variants are superficial and nodular. Each clinical presentation of the tumor has a corresponding histologic presentation. The biological behavior of a basal cell carcinoma depends not only on its histologic subtype but also on its location. Surgical excision is the treatment of choice for most basal cell carcinomas; this intervention is typically used for basal cell carcinomas that demonstrate aggressive behavior. Nonsurgical treatmen

Minor salivary gland neoplasms constitute up to approximately 25% of all salivary gland tumors. The incidence of malignancy of these tumors is slightly greater than half. Basal cell adenocarcinoma (BCAC) is a rare salivary gland malignancy that occurs most commonly in the parotid gland. In this report, we describe a case of an older woman presenting with BCAC of the upper lip arising from the minor salivary gland.

BACKGROUND: Salivary gland lesions possess diagnostic challenges on fine-needle aspiration (FNA) material. They are relatively uncommon, yet present with a wide spectrum of cytomorphology. Herein, we review common salivary gland neoplasms, their cytomorphologic features, their diagnostic pitfalls, and ancillary studies helpful in achieving an accurate diagnosis.
SUMMARY: There are many cytomorphologic overlaps between benign and malignant salivary gland entities. Moreover, metaplasia, cystic changes, and degenerative changes are common findings adding to diagnostic dilemmas. These complicatin

Metastatic basal cell carcinoma is a rare, malignant neoplasm associated with poor survival. A 63-year-old woman had an extensive primary keratinizing basal cell carcinoma of the scalp, with metastases to the regional lymph nodes of the neck. Disease in the primary site and in the regional lymph nodes was controlled by surgery and irradiation. However, skeletal metastases that responded to therapy with three courses of cisplatin and bleomycin sulfate and then to ten courses of cyclophosphamide, methotrexate, and fluorouracil developed. Subsequent progressive metastases failed to respond to a c

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) is the most common nonmelanoma skin cancer in humans, and is the most common malignant neoplasm among adults in the US. The peak incidence occurs in the seventh decade of life. Childhood onset of BCC is rare and usually associated with genetic disorders such as basal cell nevus syndrome, Bazex syndrome, albinism, and xeroderma pigmentosum or due to radiation therapy. Idiopathic childhood onset is less common. A girl with idiopathic onset of BCC who was treated with Mohs micrographic surgery is reported. A computerized review of the literature was performed.
