Spontaneous diseases in a closed colony of Praomys (Mastomys) natalensis.

In comparison with other rodents, the mastomys is unique as regards the patterns of neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases that it develops, some of which may constitute suitable animal models for corresponding diseases of man. Among the spontaneous diseases commonly encountered in necropsies of 600 mastomys maintained in a closed colony were: (1) degenerative joint disease of diarthroses and interventricular disks, which develops regularly in the second year of life; (2) renal disease, a type of immune-complex glomerulonephritis, affecting approximately 80% of mastomys in the age bracket 18-3

Cecal Leiomyosarcoma Management: A Case Report and Review of Literature.

Leiomyosarcomas are very rare soft tissue sarcomas originating from smooth muscle cells. This neoplasm can develop in various places around the body, including but not limited to the uterus, retroperitoneum, colon, blood vessels, and bladder. This case report details the discovery of a cecal leiomyosarcoma in a patient who presented to the emergency department after a year of abdominal pain, fatigue, and unexpected weight loss. The report will discuss the available literature on leiomyosarcoma, the surgical approach for management in this patient, and post-operative management.

Glomus tumor of the trachea - Synopsis of histology & methodology of treatment.

Glomus tumors are neoplasms arising from modified smooth muscle cells surrounding arteriovenous anastomosis in the dermis and subcutaneous tissues, which are contributing to blood flow regulation and temperature control on the skin surface. Glomus cells are sparse or absent in visceral organs, making extracutaneous presentation of glomus tumors an extremely rare finding. We briefly report histological considerations on glomus tumors of the trachea and sum the multidisciplinary aspects of their staged endoscopic and surgical management using the example of a rare case presentation.

Oral squamous cell carcinoma in a pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina).

An adult, gravid, female pigtailed macaque (Macaca nemestrina) presented for facial swelling centered on the left mandible that was approximately 5 cm wide. Differential diagnoses included infectious, inflammatory, and neoplastic origins. Definitive antemortem diagnosis was not possible, and the macaque's condition worsened despite supportive care. Necropsy findings included a mandibular mass that was locally invasive and expansile, encompassing approximately 80% of the left mandibular bone. The mass replaced portions of the soft palate, hard palate, sinuses, ear canal, and the caudal-rostral

Pseudomyogenic Hemangioendothelioma: A Vascular Tumor Previously Undescribed in the Oral Cavity.

The pseudomyogenic hemangioendothelioma (PMH) is a low-grade malignant vascular neoplasm of different tissue planes including skin and soft tissue. Primary tumors in the skeletal muscle and bone have also been diagnosed. The PMH was introduced into the WHO classification of tumors of soft tissue and bone in 2013. This is the first description of oral involvement. A 21-year-old female presented with a 2-month old swelling of her gingiva. The swelling appeared red in color and was soft in consistency. A clinical diagnosis of a pyogenic granuloma was made and an incisional biopsy was submitted fo

Cancer-associated myositis in the presence of anti-Jo1 autoantibodies and the antisynthetase syndrome.

We describe 3 patients with inflammatory myositis in association with a neoplasm whose serum also contained anti-Jo1 antibodies, one of which presented characteristic features of the antisynthetase syndrome. No patient had a rash, and muscle biopsy was suggestive of polymyositis in all 3. Immunohistochemistry confirmed the diagnosis of polymyositis in the single patient with sufficient tissue available. Our patients remind us that the presence of antisynthetase antibodies (and even antisynthetase syndrome) in a patient with inflammatory myositis does not preclude the diagnosis of cancer-associ

Morphofunctional Profile Focusing on Strength and Ultrasound of the Upper Limbs in Female Breast Cancer Survivors: A Comparative Cross-Sectional Study Between Groups with and Without Lymphoedema and Between Ipsilateral and Contralateral Limbs.

Background: Breast cancer is the most common neoplasm in women. Despite effective treatments, sequelae such as decreased muscle strength, upper limb dysfunction, and tissue changes are common, highlighting the need for functional assessments during rehabilitation. This study analysed the morphofunctional profile of the upper limbs in breast cancer survivors, comparing muscle strength and ultrasound findings between groups with and without lymphoedema, as well as between ipsilateral and contralateral limbs. Methods: This cross-sectional study included female breast cancer survivors treated at a

[Evaluation of the usefulness of autogenic bone grafts in reconstruction of the mandible].

The treatment of reconstructions of mandible by means of autogenic bone graft in 64 patients has been presented (Fig. 1). In 55 cases the bone material was taken from the iliac crest, in 5--the skin-muscle flap, in 4--the free bone graft from VIII rib and tibial bones. The resection in 47 patients was performed because of malignant neoplasms, in 4 cases--oral and mandibular benign neoplasms, in 3 cases a part of the mandible was resected because of the osteodystrophy, in 3 cases due to osteoradionecrosis, in 3 cases--congenital anomalies, in 2 cases because of a cyst, while in other 2--after a

Immunohistochemistry of soft tissue tumours: a review.

The diagnosis and classification of soft tissue sarcomas can pose difficult problems for the histopathologist. Many sarcomas are too poorly differentiated to exhibit morphological features specific enough to define their histogenesis. Using the immunoperoxidase technique with commercially available antisera as a routine adjunct to other diagnostic aids, it is possible to arrive at more accurate diagnoses on which treatment protocols can be based. In addition a better understanding of mesenchymal neoplasms and their origins can be obtained by functional immunohistochemical studies.

Expanding the histomorphologic spectrum of TFE3-rearranged perivascular epithelioid cell tumors.

Perivascular epithelioid cell tumors (PEComas) are a family of mesenchymal neoplasms that have smooth muscle and melanocytic differentiation. They can be sporadic or associated with tuberous sclerosis complex and commonly present in the kidney as angiomyolipoma or in the lung as pulmonary clear cell sugar tumors or lymphangioleiomyomatosis. However, they can present at any visceral or soft tissue site. They usually have a benign clinical course, but rarely can behave in a malignant fashion. Most PEComas demonstrate abnormalities of TSC2, but a recently described subset harbor TFE3 rearrangemen

Retroperitoneal Cystic Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma Mimicking a Psoas Abscess.

Primary neoplasms in the psoas muscle including schwannoma and soft tissue sarcoma with secondary cystic degeneration are rare entities. They are difficult to distinguish from psoas abscess purely based on radiological findings. Malignant fibrous histiocytoma (MFH) in the retroperitoneum is an uncommon entity in contrast to liposarcoma and leiomyosarcoma. Psoas abscess is a common infection in the retroperitoneum, especially in regions where tuberculosis is endemic. In the current case, the patient presented with gradually progressive lower abdominal pain and raised erythrocyte sedimentation r

Midurethral autologous fascial sling surgery with reconstruction of the lower abdominal wall using the tensor fascia lata muscle flap for post-hemipelvectomy stress urinary incontinence.

Hemipelvectomy is surgery for pelvic bone neoplasms. In the case of pubic bone osteosarcoma, the distal end of the rectus abdominis muscle is severed from the pubic and ischium bones, and the pelvic floor muscles are resected en bloc with the bone, which leads to stress urinary incontinence. Cancer control is prioritized over complications, and stress urinary incontinence is generally disregarded. A 25-year-old woman presented with stress urinary incontinence. She had undergone a hemipelvectomy for left pubic bone osteosarcoma, and stress urinary incontinence appeared and persisted since the s

[A case report of nasopharyngeal inflammatory myofibroblastoma in infant].

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) is a rare mesenchymal soft tissue tumor characterized by borderline or low-grade malignancy. It is rare childhood tumor with an average age of onset of 10 years old. It is even rarer in infants and toddlers, and the etiology and pathogenesis of this tumor are still unclear. The clinical presentation of IMT is non-specific and are related to the location of the tumor. When the tumor compresses adjacent organs, it can cause pain and functional impairment. According to the current literature, IMT is most commonly found in the digestive and respiratory syst

Cytologic and histological features of rare nonepithelial and nonlymphoid tumors of the thyroid.

Thyroid tumors can be classified into epithelial, nonepithelial, and nonprimary lesions. Nonepithelial thyroid tumors are rare. They can be of primary origin within the thyroid gland, arise secondary to contiguous growth from adjacent tissues, or represent metastatic disease. The incidence of nonepithelial tumors of the thyroid is only 1% to 2%, most of which are lymphomas; the remainder includes mesenchymal and histiocytic tumors. This review examines the cytohistological features of various nonepithelial and nonlymphoid tumors of the thyroid, including vascular lesions, neural tumors (includ

Clinical management of a patient with advanced mucosal malignant melanoma in the sinonasal area.

We describe a case of mucosal malignant melanoma in the sinonasal area of a 65-year-old woman. She presented with a history of nasal obstruction and epistaxis with subsequent tenderness, facial anesthesia involving cranial nerve V2, red eye, proptosis, diplopia, and conjunctival chemosis. Computed tomography detected a nonspecific solid mass that had involved the left maxillary sinus and surrounding tissues, with extension into the nasal cavity and invasion of the orbital floor and eye muscles. Histopathologic examination of the neoplasm revealed that it was a malignant melanoma. We performed

A rare benign parotid gland tumor: angiomyolipoma.

Angiomyolipomas are benign neoplasms composed of smooth muscle, vasculature, and mature adipose tissue, which most commonly occur in the kidney and located in the head and neck region. A very rare neoplasm, there are only 3 cases of angiomyolipoma in the parotid gland that have been reported to date. Here, we report a case of a 38-year-old man who had a slow-growing mass in the parotid gland for the past 7 years. The results of a physical examination revealed a rubbery mass that was 2.5 cm in diameter in the below superficial lobe of the left parotid gland. A computed tomographic scan showed a

Desmoid tumour involving the abdominal rectus muscle: report of a case.

The desmoid tumour (DT) is a quite rare soft tissues neoplasm that lacks metastatic potential. Though it is characterized by a local infiltrating growth that involves frequent relapses after surgical excision. The presented case report refers to a young female in her childbearing age, who underwent the radical excision of a large DT infiltrating the left rectus muscle of the abdomen. The only radical treatment of this tumour is still the surgical resection carried out far from the tumour borders into the healthy tissues. Nevertheless, when these tumours arise in the abdominal wall, their resec

Intrathoracic myolipoma from parietal pleura with oestrogen and progesterone receptor.

Myolipoma is a rare benign lipomatous soft tissue neoplasm, occurring most frequently in adults in the abdomen, pelvis or retroperitoneum. We presented a case of a 39-year-old female with an epipleural lesion at the left paraspinal region identified using computed tomography. Magnetic resonance imaging revealed a fat-containing lesion attached to the pleura over the left paraspinal region. Surgical resection was performed, and histopathological analysis revealed a tumour composed of interlacing bundles of neoplastic smooth muscle cells with low cellularity and rare mitotic figures intermixing

Two cases of primary supratentorial intracranial rhabdomyosarcoma with DICER1 mutation which may belong to a "spindle cell sarcoma with rhabdomyosarcoma-like feature, DICER1 mutant".

Rhabdomyosarcoma is the most common soft-tissue sarcoma affecting children and adolescents. It is defined as a malignant neoplasm characterized by morphologic, immunohistochemical, ultrastructural, or molecular genetic evidence of primary skeletal muscle differentiation, usually in the absence of any other pattern of differentiation. Primary intracranial rhabdomyosarcoma (PIRMS) is an extremely rare neoplasm, with only 60 cases reported in the literature, and generally has poor prognosis with an overall survival of only 9.1 months. The DICER1 gene encodes an RNA endoribonuclease that plays a k

Vascular soft tissue tumors: medical imaging.

Histologically, tumors of the vascular system are divided into three categories. Benign types can be localized (hemangioma) or involve large segments of the body (angiomatosis). Vascular tumors of intermediate malignancy are known as hemangioendotheliomas. Angiosarcoma is one of the rarest malignant soft tissue neoplasms. The authors present the morphological and SI features of 17 histologically proven vascular tumors (16 benign, 1 malignant) examined by MRI. The results are compared with the findings on other imaging techniques. On T1-WI, the tumors are slightly hyperintense to muscle with in
