[A case of colloid cyst of the third ventricle].

Colloid cysts of the third ventricle are rare, accounting for less than 1% of all intracranial neoplasms. However, its incidence will increase with increased use of CT scan and MRI. The symptomatology is principally acute or chronic hydrocephalus obstructing the foramen of Monro, and the origin of this cyst is controversial, neuroepithelial or endodermal. We report a case of colloid cyst of the third ventricle, associated with cavum veli interpositi. The patient, a 46-years-old female, had suffered from headache, ataxic gait and tremor lasting 6 months. CT scan and homogenous high signal inten

A "polymorphous low-grade neuroepithelial tumor of the young (PLNTY)" diagnosed in an adult. Report of a case and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND: Polymorphous low-grade neuroepithelial tumor of the young (PLNTY) is a rare neuropathological entity, recently introduced in neuro-oncology. These tumors, histologically similar to oligodendrogliomas, cause epilepsy, occurring in children and young adults. Only few cases of PLNTY have been described in literature and all reported cases invariably focused on the onset of these tumors in children and young adults. CASE DESCRIPTION: We report the case of a 50-year-old woman suffering from epilepsy since the 1st year of her life. Computed tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging

Complex form variant of dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor of the cerebellum.

Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor (DNT) is a benign neoplasm with typical supratentorial location, but the possibility of these rare tumors can also be located in the posterior fossa must be taken into account. We report a 21-year-old woman that suffered gait instability, headache, and diplopia. On CT-scan, an intraparenchymatous cerebellar tumor was disclosed. It was isodense, showing light enhancement after contrast administration. On MRI (T1-weighted image) the tumor was isointense, showing inhomogeneous hyperintensity after-gadolinium administration. On T2-weighted MRI, the tumor was

Prognostic factors in diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor (DLGNT): a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor (DLGNT) is a rare tumor, first described by the WHO Classification of Central Nervous System Tumors in 2016. The clinical course is variable. Most tumors have low-grade histological findings although some may have more aggressive features. The goal of this systematic review was to identify prognostic factors for poor overall survival (OS). MATERIAL AND METHODS: We performed a systematic review using three databases (PubMed, Google Scholar, and Embase) and the following search terms: diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor, DLGNT, DLMGNT.

Hemiplegic-Migraine-like Attacks as First Manifestation of Diffuse Leptomeningeal Glioneuronal Tumor: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND: Diffuse leptomeningeal glioneuronal tumor (DLGNT) is a low-grade tumor characterized by diffuse leptomeningeal infiltrates. Symptoms are usually secondary to hydrocephalus. Hemiplegic migraine (HM)-like episodes have never been associated with DLGNT, but they have been reported with different inflammatory and tumoral entities involving leptomeninges. OBSERVATIONS: We report the case of a 10-year-old boy with recurrent episodes of right hyposthenia, aphasia, and headache lasting hours to days with complete remission. The electroencephalogram during the attack showed diffuse slower

Intraventricular papillary glioneuronal tumor with high proliferation index and CD117 positivity: Report of an atypical case and review of literature.

Papillary glioneuronal tumors are rare neoplasm, accounting only <0.02% of all intracranial tumors. They are generally low grade usually occur in the temporal lobe near the third ventricle. We report an extremely rare case of intraventricular tumor with a high proliferation index. CD 117 expression found in our case is the first study to the best of our knowledge to be described in these tumors. The clinical and diagnostic significance of this finding is subject to further studies.

A case report of high-grade astroblastoma in a young adult.

Astroblastoma is an uncommon neuroepithelial primary tumor of the brain which is of uncertain origin. We present a case of high-grade astroblastoma in an 18-year-old female with a severe headache, loss of appetite, vomiting and generalized weakness. The patient had undergone a right frontoparietal craniotomy. Large subfalcine meningioma was excised. The lesion was suspected to be a meningioma. Primary radiological investigation revealed a 6.8 cm × 5.8 cm × 5.4 cm lesion. Although the radiological and intraoperative findings were of an extra-axial tumor, the histology and immunophenotype was of

Occurrence of sequential intraocular tumors: malignant medulloepithelioma subsequent to retinoblastoma.

A 13-year-old boy, whose bilateral retinoblastoma had been treated by enucleation (OD) and irradiation (OS), developed anterior staphyloma (OS) necessitating the second enucleation. Histopathological, immunohistochemical and electron microscopic studies revealed malignant teratoid medulloepithelioma of the ciliary body, with demonstrated multipotential histogenesis. This is the first report which demonstrates the development of a second malignant intraocular tumor in an eye previously affected by hereditary retinoblastoma. Careful monitoring of patients who have had hereditary retinoblastoma i

Clinical Pearls and Advances in Molecular Researches of Epilepsy-Associated Tumors.

Brain tumors are the second most common type of structural brain lesion that causes chronic epilepsy. Patients with low-grade brain tumors often experience chronic drug-resistant epilepsy starting in childhood, which led to the concept of long-term epilepsy-associated tumors (LEATs). Dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumor and ganglioglioma are representative LEATs and are characterized by young age of onset, frequent temporal lobe location, benign tumor biology, and chronic epilepsy. Although highly relevant in clinical epileptology, the concept of LEATs has been criticized in the neuro-oncolo

Pi3K-mTOR signaling and AMOG expression in epilepsy-associated glioneuronal tumors.

Gangliogliomas (GGs) and dysembryoplastic neuroepithelial tumors (DNTs) represent the most frequent type of neoplasms in pediatric medically intractable epilepsy. Several data suggest a pathogenetic relationship between GGs and other glioneuronal malformations of cortical development (MCDs), including activation of the Pi3K-mTOR signaling pathway. To further reveal these pathogenetic similarities, we investigated immunocytochemically the expression of phosphorylated (p)-PDK1, p-AKT, p-mTOR, p-4E-BP1, p-eIF4G, p-p70S6K and p-S6, the effector proteins ERM (ezrin/radixin/moesin) and the pathway r

Gliomatosis cerebri with favorable outcome in a child: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: To report a rare clinical case of gliomatosis cerebri with favorable outcome in a 3-year old child. DESCRIPTION: A 3-year old child developed severe and progressive symptoms of gliomatosis cerebri. The initial tests were unspecific. After clinical improvement following neuroendoscopic surgery, there was a progressive decline in clinical status with development of obstructive hydrocephalus, paraparesis and difficulty in walking. The child was again submitted to surgery after disseminated injuries in the subarachnoid space were identified. She also received chemotherapy and radiother

Congenital pineoblastoma and parameningeal rhabdomyosarcoma: concurrent two embryonal tumors in a young infant.

BACKGROUND: Pineoblastomas are very rare brain tumors in fetus and neonates, comprising only 0.9% of congenital brain tumors. The occurrence of multiple tumors of different histopathologic types in the same individual is a rare event, most often encountered in hereditary cancer syndromes. CASE REPORT: We report a female fetus presented with a congenital pineoblastoma at the 32nd week of gestation, with hydrocephalus and concurrent parameningeal embryonal rhabdomyosarcoma in early infancy. RESULTS: Cytogenetic analysis showed normal karyotype in the peripheral blood of the patient, and p53 mu

Papillary tumor of the pineal region: two case studies and a review of the literature.

Papillary tumor of the pineal region (PTPR) is a newly recognized distinct entity in the 2007 World Health Organization nomenclature. This tumor is characterized by epithelial-appearing areas with papillary features and more densely cellular areas that often display ependymal-like differentiation. Ultrastructurally, this rare neuroepithelial tumor possesses neuroendocrine, secretory, and ependymal organelles that likely originate from the subcommissural organ (SCO) near the aqueduct of Sylvius. To date, approximately fifty-seven described cases worldwide have been recognized, with ages ranging

Posterior fossa astroblastoma: a case report of an extremely rare tumor with challenging diagnosis in a child and a review of literature.

A 7-year-old boy presented to the hospital with recurrent nausea and vomiting over 2 weeks. A cranial MRI revealed a large heterogeneous lesion in the posterior fossa extending from the fourth ventricle to the foramen magnum with contact to the brainstem. The lesion showed moderate diffusion restriction and multiple small cystic components. The child underwent gross total resection. The primary histological findings suggested proliferative active tumor without further definition. The extended histological examination 3 weeks later confirmed the diagnosis of astroblastoma. Due to complete resec

Seizure-outcome after surgery of low-grade epilepsy associated neuro-epithelial tumors.

BACKGROUND: Most patients with glioneuronal tumors present with seizures. Although several studies have shown that greater extent of resection improves overall patient survival, few studies have focused on postoperative seizure outcome after resection of these tumors. The aim of this study was to characterize seizure control rates in patients undergoing glioneuronal tumor resection and evaluate the association between poor seizure outcome and tumor recurrence or progression. METHODS: The study population included patients who had undergone resection of glioneuronal tumors between 2014 and 201

"Slow and Steady" Infiltrates the Brain: An Autopsy Report of Lymphomatosis Cerebri.

Primary central nervous system lymphomas (PCNSL) usually present as single or multiple lesions with mass effect involving the cerebral hemispheres or basal ganglia. An extremely rare pattern of involvement termed "Lymphomatosis cerebri" (LC) presents as diffuse, non-enhancing infiltrative lesions without mass effect. We describe the clinical, radiological, and autopsy findings of one such rare example with a patient presenting with a short history of fever, memory loss, and progressive cognitive decline. Because of subtle yet rapidly progressive clinical symptoms and overlapping neuroimaging f
