[Bone marrow histology of cytopenias : Contribution to hematological differential diagnosis].

Besides microscopic evaluation of smears, flow cytometric analysis, chromosomal and molecular studies, histological analysis of bone marrow biopsies (BMbx) is an important component of multiparameter diagnostics of cytopenias in hematology. More than in other fields of histopathology, correct interpretation of BMbx requires correlation with the results of these further studies and other clinical findings. Microcytic, normocytic and macrocytic anemia, isolated granulocytopenia and thromobocytopenia as well as pancytopenia represent frequent and recurrent diseases. With regard to aetiology, reac

Pseudocarcinomatous Hyperplasia of Tubal Mucosa Associated With Chronic Salpingitis - Clinical And Pathological Challenge: A Case Report.

Pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia of the tubal mucosa is a rare, reactive response to an underlying inflammatory or neoplastic process. We present a case of pseudocarcinomatous hyperplasia in a 26-year-old woman with clinical symptomatology of pelvic inflammatory disease, and a normal serum Ca 125-level (30 U/ml). The ultrasound finding showed presence of hydrosalpinx characterized with unilateral tubal enlargement in sausage-like shape that arose from the upper lateral margin of the uterus. The young age of the patient, presence of chronic inflammation, epithelial hyperplasia with unremarkable

Pitfalls in imaging the submandibular glands with PET/CT.

Imaging of the submandibular glands can provide vital information about malignant neoplastic processes. One of these modalities, fluorine-18 fluorodeoxyglucose-positron-emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG-PET/CT), has become very important in the detection of malignancies because it provides functional and metabolic information as well as anatomic localization. However, there are several pitfalls associated with FDG-PET/CT in terms of salivary gland imaging. For example, a normal increase in the uptake of radiotracer might be mistaken for a neoplastic process. Other routine findings m

Future and upcoming non-neoplastic applications of PET/CT imaging.

The role of fluoro-2-deoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) in the diagnosis, staging, and monitoring of neoplastic conditions is well established. The clinical utility of PET/CT has now expanded to the diagnosis of autoimmune, inflammatory, infectious, as well as non-neoplastic conditions, such as the vasculitides, atherosclerosis, and granulomatous conditions, including sarcoidosis and inflammatory bowel disease, in addition to a variety of neurologic disorders. The availability of new PET radiotracers is expected to expand PET/CT applications to a variety of other clinical do

Oral ulcers in HIV-infected patients: an update on epidemiology and diagnosis.

Oral ulcers observed during the course of HIV infection may be very severe. Such manifestations may interfere with oral functions and alter the patients' quality of life. It is important to stress that when HIV-infected individuals present with ulcerative lesions of the oral cavity, neoplastic processes and rare infections must be included in the differential diagnosis. Nontumefactive oral ulcers in HIV-positive patients may be a source of diagnostic difficulties because of the diverse array of underlying pathologic entities and multiplicity of etiologic agents. Biopsy should always be perform

Biologic and clinical significance of cytokine production in B-cell malignancies.

Cytokines are a group of polypeptide hormones endowed with pleiotropic biological properties. Normal B lymphocytes produce a number of these factors that subserve important regulatory functions in the combined processes of proliferation and differentiation. Also neoplastic B cells can release cytokines and, simultaneously, respond to the same factors in an autocrine circuit that supports their malignant growth. In addition, tumor cells can make use of the factors released by normal cells, either spontaneously or under the influence of inductive signals from the neoplastic cells. Inappropriate

Neoplastic meningitis presenting with dysphagia and bilateral vocal cord paralysis.

Neoplastic meningitis is the infiltration of the leptomeninges and subarachnoid space by tumor cells occurring in 3% to 5% of patients with systemic malignancies. Most cases present with multifocal neurological symptoms that vary according to the central nervous system territory involved. Here, we describe the first reported case to our knowledge of neoplastic meningitis causing bilateral vocal cord paralysis. Early diagnosis of this progressive disease process is essential to achieving a better treatment response and improved survival. This report demonstrates that neoplastic meningitis shoul

Appendicitis and beyond: a pictorial review of various appendiceal abnormalities.

Acute appendicitis is the most common disease of the appendix. However, the differential diagnosis for an abnormal appendix includes other conditions that often present with symptoms and imaging features that overlap with acute appendicitis. In this pictorial essay, we review the normal anatomy of the appendix and outline the pathogenesis, clinical manifestations, and imaging findings that are characteristic of acute appendicitis and other less common appendiceal abnormalities. [Surgical removal of a follicular carcinoma of the thyroid gland in a snakehead (Channa barca, HAMILTON, 1822)].

Inflammatory processes, neoplastic growths or rare dysontogenetic malformations may cause mass formation in the gills of fish. In the present case, a follicular carcinoma of the thyroid gland in a Barca snakehead and its surgical removal are reported, and neoplasms in fish are discussed. Following clinical, radiological, cytological and sonographic examinations, the gill-associated partly cystic mass was incompletely removed surgically. The subsequent histological examination identified the mass partly as a follicular carcinoma of the thyroid gland. Because the main alterations of the surgical

An overview of new biomolecular pathways in pathogen-related cancers.

Cancer molecular pathways are combinations of metabolic processes deregulated in neoplastic cells. Besides pathways specific to tissues from which cancers originate, common neoplastic traits are present among most tumors. Hanahan and Weinberg have described the most critical 'hallmarks' shared by many cancer types. In recent years, cancer stem cell specific properties and pathways have also been identified. Other altered pathways are peculiar of cancer type and cancer stage, even in different cancer stem cell types. In pathogen-related tumors, the alteration of inflammatory and immunologic res

Parasites and malignancies, a review, with emphasis on digestive cancer induced by Cryptosporidium parvum (Alveolata: Apicomplexa).

The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) identifies ten infectious agents (viruses, bacteria, parasites) able to induce cancer disease in humans. Among parasites, a carcinogenic role is currently recognized to the digenetic trematodes Schistosoma haematobium, leading to bladder cancer, and to Clonorchis sinensis or Opisthorchis viverrini, which cause cholangiocarcinoma. Furthermore, several reports suspected the potential association of other parasitic infections (due to Protozoan or Metazoan parasites) with the development of neoplastic changes in the host tissues. The present w

Neurofibromas in NF1: Schwann cell origin and role of tumor environment.

Neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1) is one of the most prevalent dominantly inherited genetic diseases of the nervous system. NF1 encodes a tumor suppressor whose functional loss results in the development of benign neurofibromas that can progress to malignancy. Neurofibromas are complex tumors composed of axonal processes, Schwann cells, fibroblasts, perineurial cells, and mast cells. Through use of a conditional (cre/lox) allele, we show that loss of NF1 in the Schwann cell lineage is sufficient to generate tumors. In addition, complete NF1-mediated tumorigenicity requires both a loss of NF1 in c

Chlorpromazine in combination with nitrosourea inhibits experimental glioma growth.

Modern cancer therapy has improved the prognosis for several tumour types. This, however, does not apply to the largest group of brain tumours, the malignant astrocytomas grades III-IV. Hence, there is need for new ideas to improve treatment. Ca2+ and the Ca(2+)-binding protein calmodulin have been shown to be involved in the processes conferring stability to DNA in proliferating neoplastic cells. We have combined the calmodulin-inhibiting neuroleptic drug chlorpromazine (CPZ), with the anti-neoplastic drug 1,3-bis(2-chloroethyl-1)-nitrosourea (BCNU) in a treatment regime for rats with glioma

The Ras Superfamily of Small GTPases in Non-neoplastic Cerebral Diseases.

The small GTPases from the Ras superfamily play crucial roles in basic cellular processes during practically the entire process of neurodevelopment, including neurogenesis, differentiation, gene expression, membrane and protein traffic, vesicular trafficking, and synaptic plasticity. Small GTPases are key signal transducing enzymes that link extracellular cues to the neuronal responses required for the construction of neuronal networks, as well as for synaptic function and plasticity. Different subfamilies of small GTPases have been linked to a number of non-neoplastic cerebral diseases such a

Coexistence of systemic sclerosis, scleroderma-like syndromes and neoplastic diseases.

Coexistence of rheumatic and neoplastic diseases may take different forms. Rheumatic paraneoplastic syndromes, including systemic sclerosis, scleroderma-like changes and Raynaud's phenomenon are induced by substances secreted by neoplastic cells and immunological disturbances connected are associated with malignancy. They may precede the clinical manifestation of neoplasm, occur simultaneously or after its diagnosis. In turn, chronic course of rheumatic diseases (Sjögren's syndrome, systemic sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, dermatomyositis) by immunologic stimulat

Multilobular tumour of bone with no abnormalities on plain radiography in a dog.

A seven-year-old neutered female golden retriever was presented for an acute onset of cervical pain and ataxia. Intervertebral disc disease or neoplasia was suspected. There was no evidence of a soft tissue or bony mass on physical examination or survey radiographs. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis did not show any evidence of a neoplastic process. Myelographic evaluation identified an extradural mass lesion extending from inside the calvarium to the mid-body of the first cervical vertebra. No additional diagnostic tests were performed as the owners elected for euthanasia because of the high possi

Role of miRNA in Melanoma Development and Progression.

Melanoma is one of the most aggressive and progressive skin cancers. It develops from normal pigment-producing cells known as melanocytes, so it is important to know the mechanism behind such transformations. The study of metastasis mechanisms is crucial for a better understanding the biology of neoplastic cells. Metastasis of melanoma, or any type of cancer, is a multi-stage process in which the neoplastic cells leave the primary tumour, travel through the blood and/or lymphatic vessels, settle in distant organs and create secondary tumours. MicroRNA (miRNA) can participate in several steps o

ANO1: central role and clinical significance in non-neoplastic and neoplastic diseases.

Anoctamin 1 (ANO1), also known as TMEM16A, is a multifunctional protein that serves as a calcium-activated chloride channel (CaCC). It is ubiquitously expressed across various tissues, including epithelial cells, smooth muscle cells, and neurons, where it is integral to physiological processes such as epithelial secretion, smooth muscle contraction, neural conduction, and cell proliferation and migration. Dysregulation of ANO1 has been linked to the pathogenesis of numerous diseases. Extensive research has established its involvement in non-neoplastic conditions such as asthma, hypertension, a

Chromosomal aberrations in a case of synchronous extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma of mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue type and bronchogenic adenocarcinoma.

We present the chromosomal aberrations in a case of synchronous extranodal marginal zone B-cell lymphoma and bronchogenic adenocarcinoma with bronchioloalveolar features. Using fluorescence in situ hybridization, we identified deletion of the immunoglobulin heavy chain gene in the lymphomatous component, but not the carcinomatous component. The presence of differing genetic compositions suggests a biclonal environment composed of 2 distinct neoplastic processes.

Baastrup's disease (kissing spine) demonstrated by FDG PET/CT.

18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography/computed tomography (FDG PET/CT) is a widely used imaging modality in cancer patients. However, there are many potential non-neoplastic causes of FDG uptake. We report a case of FDG uptake between the spinous processes, secondary to Baastrup's disease. Knowledge of this pattern of uptake is helpful in diagnosing Baastrup's disease and avoiding false-positive diagnoses.
