[Nephrostomy and percutaneous internal bypass. Technic and results. Apropos of 130 cases].

130 percutaneous nephrostomies have been performed on 106 patients, 6 of whom had transplanted kidneys. On 4 of these patients percutaneous drainage of a perinephric abscess was performed at the same time. Over 50% of the patients were in obstructive anuria. No failure was noted in placement of the nephrostomy tubes. Only one major complication occurred, a resolvent septic shock. Minor complications i.e. pelvocalyceal blood clotting, catheter dislodgement, retroperitoneal urine extravasation, are rare. There is no contra-indication to this procedure. 30 indwelling ureteral catheters and 10 dou

Percutaneous nephrostomy and irrigation lithochemolysis. A new concept for the treatment of cystine stones.

A case is reported of the dissolution of a cystine stone in the left renal pelvis by means of irrigation with N-acetyl-cysteine via percutaneous nephrostomy. As a result of this treatment no further operative measures were necessary. In our opinion the surgical removal of cystine stones is probably no longer necessary.

[New development of a one-way-system for percutaneous nephrostomy (author's transl)].

Since a surgical nephrostomy is not satisfying as either a temporary or permanent means of urinary diversion and puts a heavy burden on the patient as well, the percutaneous nephrostomy is gaining significance. Broad application of ultrasonically or radiologically controlled punctures of the renal pelvis have been til now limited due to the lack of a one-time system which is easy to manipulate. A new puncture system was thus developed with which a percutaneous nephrostomy can be performed with an up to 14 FU catheter drainage in a taechnically simple fashion. Use with a total of 41 punctures p

Ureteral access sheath or percutaneous nephrostomy during flexible ureteroscopy: which is better?

Studies in literature discussed the drawbacks of the ureteral access sheath use in flexible ureteroscopy and in the same time mentioned the benefits of ureteral access sheath in decreasing the incidence of urosepsis and better stone free rate. In the current study we aim to compare between percutaneous nephrostomy tube (PCN) insertion before flexible ureteroscopy and conventional ureteral access sheath (UAS) flexible ureteroscopy in terms of safety, efficacy and perioperative outcomes. In all, 100 Patients aged 20 to 67 years with upper ureteric stones and mild hydronephrosis or renal pelvic s

Transient Urinothorax Following Nephrostomy Tube Placement and Percutaneous Nephrolithotomy: A Case Report.

Urinothorax is a rare complication of urological procedures. This report presents a case of a patient who developed urinothorax following nephrostomy tube placement and percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). The patient was managed conservatively with chest tube and Foley catheter placement, without the need for surgery. Computed tomography (CT) and chest tube output indicated that the urinothorax occurred immediately after nephrostomy tube placement but resolved within a couple of days without further intervention. Unlike some other cases that required surgical intervention due to persistent ur

Percutaneous nephrostomy in obstructing pelvic malignancy does not facilitate further oncological treatment.

OBJECTIVE: The optimal management of patients with ureteric obstruction in advanced malignancy is unclear. How quality of life is affected by a nephrostomy and how many of these patients undergo further oncological treatment remains uncertain. The objective of this retrospective multicentre study was to look at the outcomes of patients who had percutaneous nephrostomy insertion for malignancy. METHODS: We identified patients who had a nephrostomy inserted for ureteric obstruction due to malignancy at our institution from January 2015 to December 2018. We obtained data retrospectively from our

Squamous cell carcinoma of skin due to prolonged indwelling percutaneous nephrostomy catheter.

Percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) catheter placement is a commonly performed procedure in the urological practice for various indications like percutaneous nephrolithotomy, pyonephrosis, infected hydronephrosis and after failed attempt of ureteric stenting. The nephrostomy catheter is usually associated with low complication and morbidity rate, but prolonged indwelling nephrostomy tube may be hazardous in some cases. We hereby report a case of squamous cell carcinoma of skin around the PCN, which was attributed to chronic inflammation and persistent irritation from a long-term neglected indwellin

Clinical implications of acute pelvicaliceal hematoma formation during percutaneous catheter nephrostomy insertion.

PURPOSE: To determine the clinical implications of acute pelvicaliceal hematoma formation during percutaneous catheter nephrostomy (PCN) insertion. METHODS: Collecting system hematoma burden was retrospectively assessed for 694 PCN insertions in 502 patients. RESULTS: Pelvicaliceal hematoma formation occurred in 146 kidneys (21%) in 136 patients. Clinically significant blood loss occurred in 3 patients with hematomas within one week compared to 4 patients without hematomas (p=0.39). Twenty-four patients with hematomas underwent catheter exchange within one week, compared to 55 patients witho

Reversible ureteral obstruction due to polyomavirus infection after percutaneous nephrostomy catheter placement.

BK virus (BKV) is a human polyomavirus that remains latent in the urinary tract epithelium in most individuals. However, in immunocompromised states, including after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HSCT), BKV may reactivate and cause infection predominantly affecting the bladder, commonly manifested as hemorrhagic cystitis. Renal insufficiency, occasionally requiring hemodialysis, is not uncommon and was previously attributed to medications or the development of tubulointestitial nephritis. We report a series of 6 HSCT recipients who developed obstructive uropathy of the upper urinary

Antegrade retrieval of ureteral stents through an 8-French percutaneous nephrostomy route.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to describe the technique of antegrade retrieval of ureteral stents under fluoroscopic guidance through an 8-French nephrostomy. MATERIALS AND METHODS: During an 8-year period, we retrieved 26 ureteral stents from 24 patients who were not candidates for retrograde removal or had other conditions precluding use of a retrograde approach. A loop snare or grasping forceps was used to retrieve a ureteral stent in the renal pelvis or calyx or upper ureter through an 8-French vascular sheath with a safety wire in place. A snare catheter advanced into the blad

Nephrostomy tract tumor seeding following percutaneous manipulation of a renal pelvic carcinoma.

We report a case of nephrostomy tract tumor seeding following percutaneous pyeloscopic manipulation of a renal pelvic carcinoma. To our knowledge, this is the second reported case of such a lesion surrounding the nephrostomy tract. Percutaneous pyeloscopic treatment carries a potential risk of local tumor spillage and implantation in the nephrostomy tract.

Randomized trial comparing modified tubeless percutaneous nephrolithotomy with tailed stent with percutaneous nephrostomy with small-bore tube.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Recent trials using smaller percutaneous catheters as well as "tubeless" percutaneous technique have attempted to reduce postoperative analgesia requirements and the morbidity of a traditional large-bore nephrostomy tube after percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL). We performed a randomized trial comparing tubeless procedures and use of small catheters to elucidate any differences in perioperative parameters, postoperative discomfort, complications, convalescence, and CT scan findings. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-four consecutive patients underwent randomization into tu

The STent Or NEphrostomy Study: A Randomised Controlled Trial Evaluating the Effectiveness of Percutaneous Nephrostomy Versus Internal Stent in Patient with Urolithiasis and an Indication for Decompression.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Obstruction by urolithiasis may be the reason for a percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) or the placement of an internal stent. High-quality evidence is scarce. The objective of this study is to investigate whether a PCN is noninferior to an internal stent with regard to effectiveness (time to clinical recovery). METHODS: In this nationwide randomised controlled noninferiority trial performed in 11 secondary and tertiary care hospitals in the Netherlands, we randomised 204 patients for either a PCN or an internal stent. The primary outcome was the time to recovery. KEY FI

Migration of nephrostomy tube into right atrium during percutaneous nephrolithotomy: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Percutaneous nephrolithotomy (PCNL) is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in urology. Due to blind nature of the procedure unexpected events are inevitable. Misplacement of percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) during PCNL into the venous system is one of the rarest complications causing great stress to both physician and the patient. Due to scarcity of data, no standard treatment has been proposed. Here, we present a case with misplaced PCN into venous system moving up to the right atrium and discuss its management with a review of the literature. CASE PRESENT

Percutaneous Nephrostomy Infusion: Nursing Considerations for Treatment of Upper Urinary Tract Urothelial Carcinoma.

An intrarenal approach using a percutaneous nephrostomy tube is a novel method to deliver chemotherapy and biotherapy to patients with upper urinary tract urothelial carcinoma. A paucity of evidence exists regarding basic nursing implications for this unique treatment option. This column will provide suggested guidelines to administer intrarenal treatment via a percutanous nephrostomy tube.

Percutaneous nephrostomy guidance by a convolutional-neural-network-based optical coherence tomography endoscope.

Percutaneous nephrostomy is widely used in kidney access surgeries. Despite its prevalence in urological interventions, it presents two operational challenges: 1) precise needle placement into the renal pelvis; and 2) avoiding hemorrhage from blood vessel rupture. In this study, we developed an endoscopic optical coherence tomography probe for needle navigation. We conducted experiments on thirty-one human kidneys for two aspects: 1) tissue recognition, and 2) blood vessel detection. Experimental results indicated that renal tissues including cortex, medulla, calyx, sinus fat, and pelvis could
